Windows 7 Ultimate Product Key

  1. Hey guys,
    I have a HP laptop with processor ~ 2GHz and 3GB RAM.
I recently upgraded to windows 7 ultimate from vista.
The problem is, since my processor is core 2 duo and have suffecient RAM, I bought the 64 Bit OS version.
The lappie has become horribly sluggish now and I feel this is because of 64 BIT OS. I am going to try a reformat.
But can I install a 32 Bit OS now with the same key? I am in no mood to buy the key again.. :( If this doesn't work, I'll probably just go back to Vista.
Please let me know if I can use the 64 Bit key to install the 32 BIT version.. Both being Ultimate versions.

    Thanks in advance.
  2. I believe you can as long as you bought retail. My retail edition uses the same key for both 32/64-bit versions. Did you do a clean install or an upgrade? I had a friend that had poor performance after using the upgrade option. A clean install should make things much better.
  3. To be honest, I don't think it's running slow because the 64 bit OS. Most new systems come with 64 bit and generally this is the way to go now anyway due to the RAM limitations of 32 bit OS, that and Windows 7 runs better then Vista anyway (Vista is much more resource intensive, whereas Windows 7 runs better on systems with lesser hardware)

But to answer the original question, yes you can install the 32 bit version and activate it again. The only time you will have any issues activating is if you repeatedly do it multiple times over and over again, but in this case since you just did it once, you will be fine

  5. My VLC key from work works with both 32bit and 64bit so I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

If you have 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 should work fine, it may be slow on some things but still perfectly usable, ideally you need 2GB. Plus as other people have said upgrading is never a wise thing to do, you should always clean install for better performance. :)

Edit: Forget that RAM thing, I didn't read the 3GB in your post. Just reformat everything will be fine.
  6. I had done an upgrade.

I am working from home for the next two weeks and did not have time to take a chance with reinstall..(Hence in emergency room)
    So just put back Vista.
I will try a clean install later on.
    Thanks for the help guys.
  7. Did you made upgrade from vista to 7 or made a clean install if you made upgrade only that could be the problem the previous OS configuration
