Signature Images are still not allowed on the board. This may change in the soon future, but for now, they are still not allowed. You may have noticed some users that had a signuatre image. This is becaue I overlooked the option after the upgrade, and forgot to disable it. For now, if anyone else has an image in their sig, it will be removed. This is mostly because the majority of people asked that sig images be removed, due to the slower load times. Perhaps I'll take another vote, and see which option comes up on top this time. If now the majority wants them, I wouldn't have a problem enabling them, so it's all up to you guys and gals.
Thanks for the info Vile...as for the majority vote...where do we go and vote for the sigpics? i am for them by the way....
thanks for the info Vile, just hope when the time comes, the few dont mess it up for the many... like last time
Yeah keep it close and sneaky. But thats lower than i'd go. Can you imagine just letting those that you want to vote, vote in an national election? No if you dont want people complaining keep is on the table.
DUDE!!! :nono: And just another thing, there was absolutely no difference in the loading times when so many of them had it too.. Thanks for the info Vile, hope u post that poll soon. Cheers..
You could just impose a limit - at another forum I go to there's a limit of: 400 x 150 pixels, 15kb. If a sig goes over that limit it is removed by the admins or mods and replaced by an insulting message not only is it effective but it's quite amusing as well.
i thought the old forum have an option in the cp somewhere to turn them off so if you had a slow connction it didn't matter? I want my sig's back.
its not a bad idea at all... those listed in those catagories are deserving and long time loyal members that have earnt extra privledges. might actually bring order to some or give some a light at the end of the tunnel to work towards
food for thought anyway... could be extended to those with different post counts - with post resets for those who want to spam their way to a sig
When the sigs were taken away. I wonderd why.. not why they went. but why... isnt there a server for the sigs. Where you can only upload a max image size at a max kb And that signature images can only be used from that server.. I.e you go to http://sigimage.megagames.com and upload your pic. Max file size pre determined. then you can olny use URL's starting with http://sigimage.megagames.com in your signature. this would allow every 1 to have their signature like before, but would also prevent people Making larger images and replacing the origional legal sig with theire larger sigs. like they did in the past.
Wow! Is that why the were removed in the first place? Good plan IMO, its just the expense I think the problem will be.
indeed, majority want them back and sure those who dont can use the option in the control panel to turn them off if it is annoying them (providing the option is still there)
It is a bad idea. I wouldn't be allowed a signature just because I'm a relative newbie? That's just elitst and serves no purpose other than to alienate those without the same privileges.
you see it from the negative...atm we see so many trying to fight the system or bend rules and do as they like... why not use the sigs as a reward for those who follow rules or are long serving... its only a suggestion and those who keep in line and stay around would get the goodies.
That's what rep is for. Signatures are to add a touch of individuality to your posts. Rep is for punishing/rewarding good posting. And honestly, if people are "fighting the system" or "bending rules" then give them a single warning then ban them. Simple as. If the mods can't keep us in line to the point where they'd consider bribing us with signatures then what you have is a very ineffectual mod team. A better way to fix this problem would be to promote more mods, rather than making a rule that people would either ignore or resent.
i dont see it as a bribe - as said above more of a reward... ahh which ever way Vile decides to go is his choice and im sure he knows what he's doing when the time comes
Unfortunately, rep is based only on the "rep power" of the person who gives you the "props" (I don't know how negative rep is based, as I haven't had a valid one yet - knock on wood). Most people here join, ask their question, and we don't hear from them for months when they have another one. The non-active members, in my opinion, don't really utilize the rep to it's full potential. Anybody can have a high rep, high post count, or go up through the ranks fairly quickly. Let what is actually in the posts show how "valuable" you are to the MGF community. About the whole sig images thing, I don't really care either way. It's a unique touch, and adds some "flare" (Office Space reference) to the individuality of the user. I think as long as there's nothing inappropriate in them, they should be allowed. But, as a web designer, we have to consider all audiences in decisions, such as those who are still using dial-up connections. If it's going to bog down the server horribly and make it nearly unbearable for those users, I don't think we should implement this. Now, Zaf had a good idea in giving it to a select few, which I think would be good, if we could do such a thing. Now, that could be viewed at as "choosing favorites" by some, but if someone is an active and positive contributor to the forum for a decent amount of time, I think that's one way that the MGF staff can reward that user. That's my opinion ...
Well even if the sigs are turned back on, i'd like to see Vile install the hack that limits one sig per thread. ie if you post more than once it will only show your sig with the first post. would cut loading times significantly on the really big threads..
Yeah, i agree with LT15 on that one.. Too many posts makes you lose track when theres signature images everywhere. I actually sized mine down because of that, but i'd very much like to get mine back to be honest hehe.. But as said before, i didnt experience ANY server slowdown at all when the signature images was enabled...
I think it was for the benefit of people who had slower internet connections. I mean now hardly anyone is using 56K anymore, or ceartianly less people than there were a couple of years ago.
Yeah some still have dial-up, but if theres an option to disable signature images, then they should use that...
Well fair enough, anyways I think it was shambles who said that sigs were disabled last time because of some hack that allowed you to have multiple signature images was abused.
with sigs You only download 1 picture, Which is used again and again in the subsiquent posts. 1 sig per topic wont reduce download times. Becous you only download the pic 1ce no matter how many times it apears on the page. The only thing it would help is scrolling speeds for people with Bad gfx cards, and those people would have sigs off. I believe that the sigs were dissabled becous they were a set size 100x200 and 100kb I think. People made any old sig "mysig.jpg" that was within the legal limits and uploaded them to there servers. " myserver.com" then they went to the add sig option and enterd their url... " myserver.com/mysig.jpg " These were Validated and were added to the peoples posts. Then they simply made A HUGE pic breaking all the rules. named it. mysig.jpg and uploaded it to their server replaceing the Legal sized one. as the name "mysig.jpg" had alredy been verified as ok from "myserver.com" no aditional checks were made on the SIG images. and people were able to use Illigal sized pics. And 1ce 1 person has a big SIG every 1 wants one. and pages were filled up with Sigs which could be 1mb+ large. 10 people with 1mb sigs is 10mb. (not 1 person with 1 1mb sig posted 10x Cos thats only 1mb) and on 56k on avarage 10mb takes 60mins to download. That IMO is why they were removed. And Thats why i sudgested the dedicated sig server.
That is correct and all, but i think what he meant was that, if only your first post showed the signature image, the rest of the thread wouldnt be full of signature images, stealing the focus from the text...
 Being new to the forums, here and others. I like having a Sig. but I'm just learning how to do it. I would like to be included in the voting process. I also can understand the reward system. I Myself. Who only participates in the general forums would probably never qualify for a Sig. based on a reward system and that, I think is unfair. I hope not to remain a newbie forever, However I'm new to computers even though I'm 45, never got into them much, Now I have My own and am pretty much trying to teach Myself. I love the forums and I learn a great deal from all of You!! Thanks
You are to kind Demon (I hope I didn't sound like I was whining, Because that was not My intent!)
Gotcha, I wouldn't dream of accepting something I did not earn, Check my rep power some where around 2020. ( my main deal is I think everyone should be entitled to a custom sig. within the limits to be set by the MODs. Period):niceday:
Used to be like that. but like was stated above.. That system was abused I could name names... But lets not
ok so this "announcement" has moved way off track, im sure Vile will let us know more if/when the time arises. Closing this now, if other members of staff see it fit to be opened then please do so.
