Depsite numerous warnings, people continue to abuse images & smilies in signatures, so I have temporarily disabled the use of images in signatures. If this significantly decreases page load times, then it will most likely remain this way.
yea, I have noticed some really big sigs lately which doesn't affect my page loading since I'm on broadband, but people that are still on 56k or lower do suffer.
I recon all images should be thumb nailed in the text image and link to a larger image, I know i tend to be to lazy to do this But i could start

IF YOU Like it so much YOU CAN put it in your DESKTOP as a background image and save us from the effort of watching such ... bleeh ;`s If it's about me, I would keep it off! I can admit that the loading time is way faster!
Trust me, you're not the only one that's brought this up to me. This is another reason why IMG in sigs was disabled.
Its not fair lol My avit is 4kb, But cos its bigger than 65x65 i cant use it, But apart from that yes pages load faster and i dont think will destroy any 1's life not to have sig's
Personaly, i wont be blaming the slow load times on the sigs. all the sigs here are already in my cache, im using 2mbs connection, but yet still mgf is slow. didnt notice any dif.... Too draconian of a measure for my liking, sigs are a intergral part of a forum. I realise that you do have some people using sigs over the 450x150 limit, but there sigs can be easily edited via the admin cp.. Adding that to the tiny, 65x65 avatar (most places use 80x80+) :grayno: :grayno: :grayno: :grayshy: @ gunspeed lol whats wrong with the last one :|
65x65 is small and i have a 4kb avit but cant use it due to restrictions but the avit's they supply for you are larger than 65x65 and larger than 4kb
Huh i took mine down a few days ago i didn't really need it anyway. And it takes to much space going through every post in a thread filled with sigs and text. If just one single comment line was posted, it took up 1/3 of the screen.
i kind of like sigs, (but didnt when i was on dial up) Its a way to scroll quicley through a pots without having to check who wrote the post, If i had previously seen "for instance" essexman's bouncing asian beuty 3x in the thread, as i scrolled down if i saw 4 of that sexy godesses. id know i needed to read ATLEAST from that post on,(dont worry i saved her to hard disk ages ago) Now i doubt im the only 1 who used this techeque of Counting sigs to determine how far down a old topic i had previously read, Prehaps if we mooved the avitars down to where the sigs were I could continue this practice, or of course Logically I should just look at the avitars.
use and abuse by the few if only the minority of people would not go overboard it would never have gone this far. Good move Vile, with any hope they will be enabled in the future with the minority learning they dont need a giant pop-up picture book for a sig.
The sig's had become a pain and I blocked them months ago, so I'm glad they're gone and I hope they stay gone! @ Shambles. At the top of the page there are 13 buttons, one of which is called "New Posts". Click on that one and you know that the threads listed, have all been added to since your last visit. There is a yellow arrow in a brown box next to each title, which will take you directly to the 1st new post in that thread. It's quicker than counting pictures and works even if someone changes their sig or avatar!
i liked the sigs, but i must admit some users had sigs the size of an entire screen. Those sigs from www.danasoft.com where pretty cool and small........ @ essexma, ill miss ur sig
Obviously each persons sig can be edited/removed manually from Admin CP, but I don't have time to edit 20-30 sigs on a daily basis. A custom hacks can be added to stop this, but there are still easy ways around it. Many people access this site from school, work, etc and do NOT have the images cached, so it makes no difference to them. Most places do NOT use 80x80, they use ~ 50x50 avatars. If MGF is still slow for you, it's your connection. The latest server issues we were having have been resolved, and the pages load fine for us.
Got to agree with "The Boss" there. Things did slow down for a short time but everything is back up to speed now and why should someone have to spend time and effort sorting out what the idiots know they shouldn't be doing in the first place. MGF is a FORUM and not a picture gallery!
Ok true you have some good points there. It would be a hell of a hassle for the small number of admins (you being the main one) to police the avatar rule using the cp, and would end up being very fustrating and a awful waste of time. True, not every1 will have the images cached, but that must be a small minority. I havnt been arround much over the last couple of weeks, so im presuming that there was some huge sigs being used? There is always a option to turn off sigs, if people dislike or find the sigs irritating.......... I can only talk from experience, but the places i post at, 3 of them have 100x100, 1 has 85x85 and another has 200x100. Dont think ive seen a 50x50.. anway dont mean to be critical, your doing a awesome job running this place
I agree with that statement, everything certainly works fine at this end, and there has been a marked improvement, of the site page loading speeds, since the signature pictures were removed.
Sigs are always nice, if properly used. I guess it was best to disable, for people with slower connection and other reasons.
I dont think a Sig makes a difference, its good while its there, but its not a major part of a forum ... plus, the way it is just now, if anyone wants to see someones sig, just click the link thats still left
I had disabled the sigs a long time ago so i wont notice much diference, if helps loading times for some of the members then keep them disabled
Why don't the sigs be like an avatars, just be limited to a certian pixel size (or is there some way around that?)
beleive me that wont get them back any quicker... they are gone for the time being - live with it when (and IF) Vile returns them dont make the same mistakes again (not anyone in particular)
loads much faster even though im on broadband i think its best to not have a sig or keep it under 15kb or so
yer, i guess, but i think people who abuse the use of picture sigs should b the ones suffering not everyone. however, i believe picture sigs have to be really scaled down both in pixel size and file size, and really crack down on those that dont. even on broadband there was some slow loading goin on
Yeah ! It is better to wait for the signatures to load but there should be a censor on the signatures
It didnt improve the speed here, even though i 1mb broadband! Still do whatever you think is the best for the forum
yea i NOW on 1.1MB but anyway i miss my sig :| pages do load faster tho, i thought there was an option to turn sigs off anyway was there not.....?
