XP -> 98 Networked.

Xp pro and 98se really dont seem to like being networked together, or it might be me .

When i first networked the two pc's together using a cat5e crossover cable, set the workgroups the same the 98 machine could see the shared folder and connected to the internet.Then when i took Norton antivirus and Personal firewall 2002 off and put 2003 on the 98 machine could no longer see the newtwork but could connect to the net.I took 2003 off, as stuff seemed to runn a bit slower with 2003,i cleaned the reg of any norton stuff and put antivirus and personal firewall 2002 back on and the 98 machine could'nt use the net of see the network.Ive disabled the firewall see if that is the problem and the 98 machine still cant see the shared folder.

My bro had a fidle with PFW and under internet zone control and add the 98 machine and it can now use the net.( the first time i had 2002 i didnt have to add it to trusted). But it still cant see the network.

So i dont think it has much to do with Norton as the same happens with it on or off.

So any ideas or is it XP and 98 dont network well together ?

I can confirm it works fine too, since two of the five computers I have networked, are running 98. It only took me a few minutes to set it up..All I did was share a directory on the 98 machine...At first I was not able to see it, but the 98 machine was still able to access the Net (setup as DHCP) so what I did from the XP machine is: Start-->Run-->[\\NAMEOF98MACHINE] and after that, it saw everything just fine, and automatically added it to the Network.

Are you still trying with a cat5 cable? Do you have a hub/router you could use just to test it with? (obviously the calbe is good, since it did work once, but still...)

Hmm, that did the trick for me, but...Can you just make a shortcut of the shared dir. once you are able to see it using the run command?

Nope, but he could make a permenant mapping by using:

net use h: \\nameofxpmachine\sharename

Then he'd always see the drive mapping in Explorer.

Ah, I didn't think of that. As for the shortuct bit mentioned above, I was kinda joking around. It would/does work (shortcut) but it's a lazy way out, and doesn't really solve the problem, but it would work
