I have a question: What is the purpose of both ratings and karma? Aren't they essencially the same thing, or I'm missing something out?

ratings give u points toward the mg store

They both use a point system, and do work in a similar way, but as mentioned above, the "rate" is only for the MG Store, and Karma is for karma.
