Ok I have a file on my computer. DivX file to be percise. Anyways, I can't seem to move or delete the file. It says another program is using it. But I've tried immediately moving and deleting it after a restart. I turned off every program that possibly plays movies ie WMA, the playa, WinCinema etc. So I have no idea what could be using the file. Has anyone heard of this problem before? If not, does anyone know of a program to see what program is using the file? BTW I've scanned the file and it appears not to be a virus.

This happens alot on xp, try looking through task manager by pressing ctrl alt delete and end task all of the programs that are running, now try, if doesnt work there might be more than one user using it go to the user tab and log off the one your not one, if that doesnt work restart your computer because usually it will close all programs. If you done all of these, it might be a bug.

This is a known problem with XP.

1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32"

After you make this change, XP will no longer display the duration, bitrate, dimensions of the avi file. However, it will not give you the error with the AVI files any more.

If you don't want to mess with your registry sometimes just a simple right click - properties on the offending avi will then allow you to delete it.

Bear in mind that programs like Kazza and DC will make windows see the avi as being in use if it's on share.
