Want to play movies with AVI WMV extensions

I need to know what I need for media player to play .AVI .WMV movie files?

I have the divx codecs

what version of divx are you using and what player are you trying to use?

divx 5.0.3 codec that comes with the divX bundle

I can play AVI now but the WMV files are not self executable.
what do I need to play .WMV?

Windows Media Player plays both of those file types just fine. Just make sure you have the all the latest codecs installed for it. (Try Windows Update)

wmv stands for windows media video.

so it's obvious it should work with windows media player.

The WMV files were fine untill I reformated my computer, so I will try the update option.

Yeah get teh windows updates and see what happens, or you could always go to microsofts website and get the newest windows media player (its v9 right now).

I think Ive solved the prob, when I renamed the .wmv to a .mpg
it works!, but why wont it run as it was?

Well maybe u dont have the right version of wmp or u just have a bad copy sum how.

I had archived the files to RAR, and I think it screwed up the files
because in explorer it was shown as test and now its test.wmv
