PS2 only plays PS1

I have a PS2 that only plays PS1 games, it will not play PS2 or DVD's. I have done a little research on the web to try and find out what could be the problem. Well it seems this is not uncommon, it actually has happened to alot of ppl. However, I have yet to find a solution, some sites say to buy a new laser others say to take the PS2 apart and recalibrate the laser (which is very difficult and time consuming without an oscilliscope). I have a R-model (model no. has an R at the end), is this an early version of the PS2? Most of the sites that sell lasers for them do not have lasers for R-models. Are they sold anymore, can anybody help me out with this? Maybe there is something else I can do to get it to work? Thanks.

Well tell the guy that chipped your ps2 to do something about it, if you have a chip, if you dont have a chip it means it wont work.
Or give your ps2 back.

It's not chipped. I just wanna be able to play PS2 games on it. I know it has something to do with the laser eye, but I can't seem to find a new one for my model number...guess that should tell me something. Can't complain though, I got it for free:)

The r model ps2 it new its more than likely a v5 or 6 and you cant get new lasers for them because the ribbon cable fits to the laser differently.You would have to get a second hand laser or one out of a broken ps2.

or if you still have the box, take it back to a walmart and exchange it, theyll take anything back, just tell em it wont work u want a new one;)

I think I am gonna try and take it back, a friend of mine has a box he will let me use.

Lol @ Scyraxxx, yeah its a PS2, but I guess you could say its a PS1, thats all its good for.
