Hey peeps.
Well i ain't posted on the MG Forums recently but thats cos i bin busy with gcse's etc. But the other reason is, my computer has been moved into my room. Now, before it was downstairs, while the other computer (my brothers) was upstairs. During this time, we had the two computers linked via LAN going through a HUB between the two coms. But now that my computer is in my room, we done away with the HUB, and installed a direct PC to PC connection (as my room and my brothers room is next door). Now since my computer has moved into my room, the loadup of my computer takes an age. It stalls on the Windows XP professional logo, and the little load bar stalls in one postition for about 2 minutes, then continues to load. I have looked up this problem on the internet and some people suggest the long start-up's are due to the PC trying to locate the other computers IP (hence me explaining the whole "LAN HUB" thing.
If any y'all know whats causing the problem and how to fix it, that'd be great.......hehe thanks for any feedback,
Jordan

This is wireless right?
I'd say make a clean slate for both computers. If you are serrious about getting both of these problems fixed, you may have to format and then reinstall both the OSes on both computers.
Nonetheless, welcome back jquin!

Whoa there Aman, ever heard of chucking out the baby with the bathwater.....
All you probably need to do is manually specify an IP address in the range of 192.168.0.x where one is 1 and the other 2 etc...
They may be trying to do a DHCP lookup, which could account for the delay. But I wouldnt bet on it.
Were they connected via a Hub or a Router with a built in hub before?
If it was just a dumb hub, was there anything else on the net.
If not, are you are using a crossover cable with rj-45 type (telephone jack style)?
BNC co-axial type cable?
If you had them to a router for shared internet access then....
Sounds like they may be trying to do a DNS lookup, have any software that wants to connect to the net?

I think that the hub is the best way to go. I have a lynxis and with xp all i did was plug it in and my two comps conected.

What kind of broadband is it? ADSL or Cable.
What does it present to you, RJ-45, USB or an ADSL PCI Adapter.
You were sharing it, are you still?
What were you sharing through? The 'hub'? Windoze Internet Connection Sharing? or something like Nat32?
Once I get a picture of what you were doing, I can advise you from there.
Cheers.

cable broadband via ntl, as ive said weve connected the comps via a straight pc to pc rj-45 connection. The internet is shared via windows internet sharing

It might be from the cables try putting the cable in the next hub, try getting a new cable for it.

Well you would have had a faster and easier network if you had just gotten another hub. How do you have the Modem hooked up if you are running a PC to PC network cable? Does one of you computers have two network cards?
anyways, just go and make sure that you have everything set up right in your network setting. Also use MSconig to see whats being loaded during your start up, and turn off the stuff you don't need

Okay, you probably just need to run the ICS wizard type thing again, and see if that improves things.
The cable may be faulty, I have seen a lot of the cheap crossover cable are just no good.
It may just be that the NIC you have in your PC checks for a hub/switch on init and takes its time when doing it. Obviously as you no longer have a hub, its not finding one.

How much Ram does your computer have? Not enough Ram will slow down networks. You should also try ro reinstall your network.
