im using xp pro and ive had nothing but bother with games on it what do you think is the best os for playing games also being as thick as i am could i put another os over xp pro if not how do i uninstall it and do a complete new start p.s ive downloaded this to get rid of directx9 but does anyone no how it works told you i was thick the xp pro disk is a copy by the way.
This uninstaller uses your original XP or .NET CD to restore your original DirectX 8 files.
Extract these files to C:\DXTEMP! You must extract these files to this directory and run
the UnDx9.bat that uninstalls the DIrectX files in SAFE MODE. Enjoy!
thanks in advance

For playing games you can't go wrong with Win 98se, I use 98 and I have no trouble what-so-ever:)
Me and most of my friends use XP Pro and we
never have any probs playing games it is solid.
As for direct X 9 there is some software to get rid of it but i would not recommend doing it.
Cany you be more specific abot what problems you get and i might be able to help.

I have obviously the most popular around here, XP pro, and have no problems. What kind are you experiencing, and with what games eh?
The game probs could be ur hardware m8!
Anyways: I have Windows XP Pro for my primary partition - which i use for all my gaming and have no prob with it. I have windows 2000 on that same hard drive as a secondary partition - use it mostly for school but I ran a few servers on it as well. I then have Windows 98SE on another hard drive, but I don't use it that much. Win98 just gives more blue screens than 95, and there are no changes. I hate 98, so I don't use it much. I then have, on ANOTHER hard drive, Red Hat Linux, the VERY BEST for running servers, and Slackware Linux as well, which is the VERY BEST for desktop computing.
Go on, take your pick! :D
Have you got SP1 for XP cos if not then put that on and see if it helps.

Yeah, m8 xp pro I think is the way 2 go, when I had win 2000 it would lack games like a mother but now with xp pro it seems fine and everything slides into place, especially with networking.

If you keep XP updated i wouldnt see any need to change. eventhough i use XP pro, i do miss my 98 SE sometimes.

i,m using xp pro sp 1 and the updates and i have no problems with games
i tried 2000 but had a number of conflicts with games
i switched from 98se to xp pro and i have never looked back xp pro is far more stable than the earlier os by microsoft the thing is though you have to keep it updated and your drivers must be the very latest
i run lightwave and 3dsmax also truespace these are very system intensive programs and can be quite tricky to get working correctly if they are installed on the same machine but i have no conflicts and they all work within the required parameters i often model in one and export it into another so for me xp is the os to use
i,m also a game freak and haven,t come across a game yet that has given an os based error
im running direct x9 and the latest detonators
so if your having problems its either drivers, hardware or you havnt got it upto date

why are you people using XP and 2000? Seems like a crazy idea when XP does everything...

when i had win98 or win me, i never had any problems to play any game.
but if you have good hardware, all updates etc, it should work on win xp too.
atleast the new games.

The reason why I don't like XP for games is because of the compatibility problems. Many games don't work on XP (or you need patches). i have both OS on my comp. So why not keeping 2000 and XP :)

cant you run them in compatibility mode?
Jamez
btw: I have never had a problem with this..

I tried the compatibility mode for various games, some worked, others not, at least not with older games.
Most everything I try in compatability mode doesn't work, but then again I am not quite a microsux user. I use mostly Linux (they are my primary boot up OSes - slackware is my primary) and I am using linux right now as I type this. I only go onto Winbloze when I am gaming. I program, run temp. servers, etc in Linux, and all my school work is on my Win2k partition. Easy! :)

I could post you a list of games which didn't work on XP, but worked just fine on Win 2000 or earlyer :)

CP/M is wayyyy better than QDOS, or MSDOS as its now called, but ymmv.

Well, it depends on whether you play older games (older than 2-3 years) or not. If not, XP. If you do, probably dual boot 98se and XP.
Personally, I use 2k, its up 24/7, I generally play games while downloading and listening to winamp (2.7x, v3 suxx so hard it blows)

I was talking about older games such as Red Alert 1,Worms,Warzone 2100,Dungeon Keeper 2, etc. Some of them work only if you apply the patches specially made for XP

I don't think XP Pro is all that it is cracked up to be, I have had trouble playing games, here are just a few:
GTA3
James Bond Nightfire
Project IGI
Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza

uea with xp pro u can run in compatbility mode for old games...i had probs with ME...xp pro is the best
XP is NOT the best and there's proof. You know why? Because LINUX ALWAYS IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS! There ya go... proof.
XP is soooo uncompatable - Windows 2000 I can deal with but XP, ME, 98, all crap. I use Slackware Linux the most - u should ALL get it guys sheesh...

Dude, just because it's the easiest doesn't mean its the best - it most likely means its the WORST! ;)

right here is my case for xp
98 was no good as most of the stuff i use needs to be on an nt based os
i tried 2k i found that i was having problems gaming,
plus and this is the important bit for me if i had more than one 3d program on eg lightwave and 3ds max or truespace i had conflicts so severe that it was impossible to use any of them
exportation of files to other apps was unthinkable because of the stability issues
so when xp came out it was a godsend for me
not only can i model with an application but i can export to any number of rendering applications and not worry about dreaded conflicts
plus i get the bonus of being able to game all with the one os
so for me it is the best

For regular users like us, Windows XP Pro will be the best. It's stable, easy to use, and compatible with most softwares.
For programmers and etc, Linux will be the best. Very stable also and open source.
For graphic designer, OSX will be the best cause the MAC is still made for graphic designers.

most stable os is still Win 2000 Pro !
i never had any lockup at work, except some strange flicker (had to restart).
if a program hangs, you can get up taskmanager immediatly and close the program.

If macs were for graphic designers they would have 2 mouse buttons... ;)
and aman:
"XP is NOT the best and there's proof. You know why? Because LINUX ALWAYS IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS! There ya go... proof. "
Thats called an opinion - you actually need evidence to be able to call it proof...

it all comes down to personal prefreance. i like XP pro. never had any issues with it, exepct when i was running my Celery, my Half-life frame rates where abysmail, and in 98 they were tolerable, only real issue, other than that, XP is a Great OS...if only it was $100 cheaper...
