The $64,000 question that has been asked since october of 2000 on these wayward shores.
The network adapter has the Hdd logo on it, to signify that it will work with the Hdd whenever it is released. Scy is correct to the hookup/interface of the Hdd/network unit.
I heard that it would be released in March, yeah, march of 2001 that is.
Then it was 1stQ(march!) of 2002. Heck, I used to have a link where some Sony rep was floating the idea of Sony not producing them at all and letting 3rd party companies do it< a bad idea when I saw it as it told developers that Sony wasn't really serious about supporting Hdd enabled games; good to see that they killed that idea>
Now they hedge their bets and say the end of the year.....
bwahahaha.
Bundled w/a console w/no price increase? Who's doing their books? Ex-Enron accountants?
Unless the Hdd is pure junk(I give sony more credit than that), I see no way to sell it for less than $70 a unit @ extreem bulk discount rate without suffering a loss of some sort.
Sure they could pack it in and keep the PS2 at $200 while the XBX drops to $150.
It's called too little, almost three years too late.
The jap PS2's have had internal AND external Hdd's for over 2 years now.
I only wonder, can a PS2 use both int/ext for a combined 80 gigs? mmmmmmm
I'm about to just friggin breakdown and get a damnable japPS2 and chip it to play US games and DVD's. That seems to be the only market Sony cares about giving the latest stuff.
The US gamer is just a red headed cash cow to Sony.
We get what they give US, when they give it to US.
for now
We'll get nothing and like it!

well JAGPANZER, being that over 70% of the gaming market is in Japan, i think that is a little more of a reason why they get most of the good stuff. But is it really that big of a deal? we will get the HDD like I said by the end of the year. I dont mind waiting, i have other things to do. i still have yet to fill my first 8mb memory card so im not hurting for space, if/when FFXI is released it will be a good day, but there is pleanty of stuff out right now that begs to get noticed. So sit back, and let sony do things the way they have done them for the last 11 years. obviously its been working.

You have yet to fill your first 8 meg card?!!
My boy has 4 filled up, it isn't really that hard to do. I filled my first card up relatively fast. I had to delete files I would have rather not at the time.
70% of the gaming market? Yeah right. At a running total of over 45,000,000+ units sold to date, I doubt even half of that number sold is Japanese sales. The population of the country is barely a hair over 90,000,000 kids included. Not to mention in a recession that makes ours look like a shopping haven.
The numbers don't jibe with reality.
I know the jap gaming scene is important, but you are delusional if'n you think it accounts for anything less than a third of all PS2 consoles sold.
I would think the US leads the pack, followed by the pacific rim nations, then europe, then and only then japan. Gimmie a break, for japan to account for the lion's share of sales, more than 1(almost 2) in 3 japs would have to own a PS2; not likely in any event.
You are a sony sychophant akiji, pure and simple. Excuses are for those who have use for them.
I wouldn't care about the release date of the Hdd's if not for the fact that it was Sony WHO MENTIONED IT. Sony doesn't owe me anything unless they put themselves in that position.
I didn't twist their SCEA reps arm into proffing up a phony release date back in 2000, OR 2001, or 2002 for that matter.
If you can't put up, shut up.
Small time gamers who think 8megs is absolutely roomy might have far bigger fish to fry before they consider an Hdd.
But to the REAL gamers out there, MGS2-SUBS, Aerodancing 4, FFXI, these are but a few Hdd enabled games that are KICKASS, but sadly not doable on the US PS2's mod chip or not.
You may not be ready for Hdd enabled gaming on the PS2, I for one was back in March of 2002 when I got wind of Aerodancing 4's upcoming release.
As for the end of the year?
Don't hold your breath.
Ha, I've heard that before from SCEA, so I'll believe it when I see it.
I don't dig being lied to, unlike some people.

I wouldnt say sycophant, more like patient. And the reason i have yet to fill up my memory card is that i dont keep many old save files. I dont have enough time to play most games coming out let alone ones I have played through. Waste of space in my opinion. So i obviously see no need to buy the HDD for myself yet.
As for the release date, oh well. Anyone who has been playing games for a while (more so on the PC) has come to expect delays for releases. Look at Zelda, 3 1/2 months after its first release date was set it will be released. Gran Tourismo was going to be a launch title before they bumped it a year. This is just the gaming industry. Sony ran into problems so they had to wait. I believe that this year will be the year for the HDD because I was told by a Sony District Rep. they wanted it to be bundled with a PS2 by this Christmas. If it isnt, then again, oh well. I expect as much by now. But it would be nice.
I dont see what the big deal was. I answered the post with the knowledge that i had. Im sorry if it was wrong. I was told by reliable sources so i passed on the info. We had different info. It happens. But you really dont need to make a big deal about it.
This Hard drive thing in Consoles is stupid. Why buy a console when you can have MUCH MORE TO DATE technologies with the same thing???? Why use a hard drive for your gaming machine if you can take much better advantage of it on a PC???!! I used to buy consoles like the SNES because they were different and unique compared to a PC - now they are both the same thing and PC is better at performing at these things! A computer beats out ANY console with a Hard drive so why do it? Why not just get a PC if you want a hard drive?! What happened to the good old days when consoles and PCs were so different?! :(

The day you have to down load patches for Console games is where the line between PC and console evaporates
Akiji
02-28-2003, 10:19 AM
the HDD is actually an ok idea. Instead of buying a sequal to a game every year or so companies are putting out new add-ons. Not patches, but full new levels to play. Like with XBOX, this spring they will add a new level to Splinter Cell that you can download using XBOX live, and from what i have read, it will be free. As for the PS2 HDD, it is mainly for the on-line games. The save files are larger than the memory cards so the HDD is a required feature. But I agree, the border of console/PC is comming very close. But when you look at it, all a console is is a simple PC for family use.

No offense intended Akiji, just ruff play.
I suppose it's preference, I have lots of games still technically "in-play" right now that I continue when I get to them. I don't have the luxury of devoting 11+ hours to any single game...anymore; kids and all. So memory cards are a real help with multiple NFL/NBA seasons going and all.
I would rather Sony just shut the hell up until they ship the damnthings.
You my brother may babylon.
I hooked up faster to XBXLV than my buddy could with his PC rig to his gaming server.
The bridge is narrowing.

console gaming's a lot better compynys make better games for consoles than for pc! oh yeah! cool i didn't miss final fantasy x on ps2! i would have wasted my money buying a pc for gaming! n good i'm not gonna miss ffx-2 n lots of great games that will never go out for pc!

No prob JAGPANZER.
Ok, Console has a wider range of games, but when it comes to fast paced, quick reaction, mindless fun, mouse and keyboard are still the best. I would take on anyone in Unreal Championship if they are on their XBOX or PS2 and I have my PC. But when it comes to RPGs or some action adventure, i reach for my console.

Speak of the devil.
I ran into a Sony rep here and once again put the screws to him.
To his credit, even though SCEA gave out numerous public release times for the Hdd. He was never able to fix a date to it, always, "it's coming soon", that's what they (keep/kept) telling him.
Until last week........
This is the first time I got a month uttered; mid june. Final window TBA as soon as production gets their numbers.
And true to PS2 form,
initial quantities will be limited.

So...there gonna release a few at the start see who will pay like 300 bucks for one, then after a few months drop the price by about half...

I think when it was released in Japan it was only $80, maybe $100. But it was a while ago that i read about it so i may be wrong. But the limited release isnt as bad as it sounds. Think of how many households with PS2s there are, now think how many of those people want the HDD. Sure there is going to be a limited #, but there is going to be an even greater demand.

As you can see, I did not insult console games. Spam is what you are doing.
PC games will always be better than Consoles because they cost 3-4 times as much to play. End of discussion! What I was explaining was that a console is supposed to be a GAME system not a computer, and when they put a COMPUTER inside a GAME SYSTEM, they will make what will be the crappiest gaming PC ever. Console games are much different from PC games. PC Games have better graphics, they have more gripping games (and the replay values are much higher) and the entire achitecture of a PC game is so different from a console. Now why are they putting a hard drive in a CONSOLE, where you buy many more games (since you wear out the fun of a console game much quicker than a PC game)? If you put a hard drive in a totally completely different gaming system, you are turning it into a PC imitator. I am assuming everyone will want the differences between a console and a PC the same. Why must we chose between a cheap imitator of a PC and a PC? It makes no sense! Console games = Fighting games, 3d Adventure games, some RPGs. Not meant to go online, not meant for PCs. PC Games = FPS, RPGs, RTS - these games have much higher replay value thanks to multiplayer and a LARGE number of downloadable maps, characters, mods, skins, etc. Fighting games, Adventures, and the RPGs found on consoles - I can't IMMAGINE how they would need a hard drive.
Again, I will state this: Why make consoles cheap PC imitations?! Keep them as they are and keep them different from PCs!!! :cussing:
And Scyraxxx: You have never played a computer game before. Don't talk in bad ways about them if you have never played one before. I, on the other hand, have right to what I am saying, since I played console games until I was around 10 or 11, where the N64 & psx came out, and all console games started to suck. I played PC and my SNES equally, and then the damned N64 comes out and it sucked so much and the psx - I liked console games because of how much different they were from PCs. Now I hate them because they try to be PC imitators and they try to bring all these people that have no idea what they are doing/talking about from mainstream crowds to be addicted to cheap PC imitators. I hate that.
So, scyraxxx, don't talk crap about PC games, as it is obvious you have never played one. Atleast our long lost idiot makaveli had experience with PC games so he was entitled to what he said.
And if these "good games" that you talk about never get released on the PC, I could honestly care less. You know why? Because I know already that most console games suck compared to a PC game. I still play Unreal Tournament for heaven's sake! Jeez, immagine having a game like Final Fantasy, the "Best RPG ever" on a PC. It would suck so terribly. It would insult a PC. The same with having Command and Conquer on a console, oh wait. That already happened! Hah..

Take chill pill Aman.
Consoles are not what they used to be, this ain't yo daddy's Atari.
In a relatively short time, word processing and other non-entertainment type apps will be the only thing you can do on a PC that a console won't.
Multimedia-broadband movies, television, music mp3's, divx, dvr, email, eshopping, and video gaming will all be standard for tomorrows console.
The upgradeable pap is not a technical hurdle impossible for consoles to pass get over yourself.
It is only a limitation put in place by the manufacturers.
Upgradeable CPU's and GPU's are finally being considered by some maverick upstarts.
The wondeful XBX media center, though it is a hack job, is a perfect example of what's to come.
Likewise, Phantom type consoles aren't too far away.
At some point the chassis of the console will be strong enough that replacement CPU's and GPU's would be a cheaper option for the major players to consider offering in addition to newer consoles.
I for one don't want to do photoshop or clairisworks on my console.
My consoles only "crash" if the disk is dirty.
The stability of the console is one that a PC'er could only dream about.
Stability, ease of use, graphically we are catching up fast. The XBX is HDTV ready, something that your PC isn't. Oh sure you can go BUY a card and hope the drivers and install work perfectly; but I'm going onto my next level before your game is even booted up.
Monitors for std TV's are quickly approaching SVGA quality.
With digital TV and HDTV soon to be standards, they will have TV's that allow for PC's to connect to them.
The Hdd should be around $70 US.
Jaggy: You are wrong my friend. My Graphics card is HDTV ready when I bought it. For about 380 bucks, I bought a Radeon 9700 that came with an HDTV adapter - I can use a monitor and HDTV at the same frickin time. Try doing that on your suX-box. Why change a console into a PC? As you said, tomorow's console will do everything a PC can aside from word processing - why do that?! What the hell is the point in buying a console that acts like a PC when you can buy a REAL pc that can do the things consoles do better and more? How does that make any sense?
Get real man. Why would you want a computer on a low-resolution TV? I have a PC on a high-resolution 22inch Hitachi monitor that can reach 1947x1876 - thats higher than an HDTV resolution already .
In addition, the stability that you guys talk about is complete crap. Do you know why? Because I have a kick-ass computer. I haven't had any program crash on me or run slower than 100fps in over 6 months. A PC can already handle over four times better than standard graphics of a console - why do we still outperform consoles in FPS? Reason: we have much better technologies.
This is back to the point about HDTV. My computer came with HDTV ready and available. Someone's crap computer may not, because they didn't pay as much. The day that I see the possibility to "build your own consoles" i will puke my organs up. PCs are one of the main reason I switched over is because of the customization that NO CONSOLE CAN DO. Sure, every console is ready for certain things, but PCs can have that and more. I don't quite understand. If a console can do everything that a PC can accept for word processing, non-entertainment apps, etc. then why not buy the PC, which can perform better at EVERYTHING a console does better, and additionally, buy the PC that has MORE than a console? That doesn't make any sense! If this happened, would scyraxxx still be able to say PC games suck? No! Because they'd be the same thing!!
I used to always play my n64 and my SNES because it was so much different from a PC, the experience was unique. Now I play an Xbox game and I gag towards the fact that you could do the same thing the Xbox is doing on a PC with a much higher performance rate.

It is sad that there is no longer a visible line between console and PC today. The simple philosophy of being independent or unique has been washed away. Now if you want a game it doesnt really matter what you have. PS2, PC, XBOX, whatever. Sooner or later it is available to you. Because of this, these sorts of discussions come about. What is better? none of the above. What really is the difference? Keeping up with technology is hard enough these days. Computers need to be upgraded yearly to stay "ahead" of the times where consoles are updated every 5 years to allow the common person or the experianced gamer easy access to games without having compatibility issues or driver problems. So like i said, its all the same really, just a different way of achieving the same goal, taking a little time out of life to have fun. doesnt matter how you get there, just that you do.
