Well slap me side ways I have just done the online housecall virus scan on my comp, after being clean of this virus for 3 days, and now it somehow found its way back up onto my comp. This backdoor.optix.12 virus is a real bizotch. I totally formated both my hard drives and installed a fresh new copy of xp and it seems to still be there(the virus that is). If you have the freee time goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and tell me if have found that this backdoor.optix.12 virus has creeped onto your system without knowing.

See the funny Thing is I haven't really noticed any difference with the virus on my comp, I'm really not sure weather or not it is doing anything.

Also the last time that I had found out I had this virus I installed Norton Anti-Virus and that messed up my whole system. So right now my Norton is deactivated or in other words not installed.

Your computer is probably infected with a Boot-Sector type Virus. This type of virus copies itself onto the boot sector of hard disks. The virus replaces the disk's original boot sector code with its own code. This allows it to be loaded into memory before anything else is loaded. Once in memory, the virus can spread to other disks. Try deleting the partition and recreating the partition.

It's also smart to not use any sort of disk that you have made after getting the virus cause you wouldn't want to infect your computer again. Also, make sure you have an Anti-Virus Program installed before you add anything to your fresh installed system because you wouldn't have to worry about the virus and you can find where the virus is coming from.

try here m8 for some extra info on what i think maybe close to it

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.optix.html

Several variants of Backdoor.

Optix have been discovered. All of them, when executed, open a port on the computer. This allows a hacker to connect to the computer and perform any desired actions. All variants discovered will also attempt to terminate the process for several antivirus and security products.

Some of the variants may execute additional files when the file containing Backdoor.Optix is executed. Variants that send messages using the ICQ network have also been discovered. The messages are sent to the author of the Trojan to tell them that an infected computer is online.

Many, but not all variants of Backdoor.Optix create a Winstart.bat file that can contain various commands. These commands could include recreating the Trojan if it is deleted.

I may be off track but if you have a varient of what i posted above... you may be getting this from a friend.

yeah, molle i'm not sure if I want to use norton anymore, I think that norton had made my comp really lock up not because of the software but the virus. The virus detected that an anti-virus piece of software was installed and started to screw around with the computer.

so Zafiras are you saying that when I'm using an instant messenger that the virus could be sent through it and then comtracted onto my comp. So whoever I talk to on aim or msn my also have gotten this virus from me?

just a bit of info that may be of some use here
with xp trojans tend to be hidden in the system restore
i have never had probs with trojans {touch wood} so i dont know the exact details but according to someone who has they tend to hide in the system restore
and the only way to deal with them is to turn off system restore then reboot your machine
sadly this means you will lose any and all restore points
but it is the only way to deal with them

to turn off the system restore goto start/control panel/system /system restore then tick the box to turn it off

Norton & McAfee are the top 2 Anti-Virus companies in my opinion. I personally prefer Norton. What version of Norton were you using? If you need further assistance, let me know. :)

I do an awfull lot of business removing virii from Norton protected (?) machines using McAfee.
As far as I am concerned Nortons is quite useless.

ive never had a problem with Norton here... and pretty much seen equal (however low) number of problems on other machines useing mcaffee and norton.

as for the actual virus, i have used a program in the past that opens a portal to another computer so i could work on it from here... virus detectors saw it as a virus and i was the only one able to open the portal...

what im getting at is maybe someone has given you a program (maybe tricked you) and you have opened it... opening a portal.

Norton Anti-Virus so far has never disappointed me. It's so far one of the best anti-virus program I used. I can't find anything wrong with the program.

this seems like one of those i prefer this to that threads
i say if you use a product and are happy with it then continue using it
me im in the mcafee camp had no problems with it so im stickin at it
on here we have people saying they use norton but have no problems yet others use it and are plagued with them maybe its the way you are using it
so why dont the people using norton without problems. tell those that are, the settings that they have in effect.
or at least dirrect them somewhere where they can learn the settings to use
it may be more helpfull than just slagging off the software
