Hello,
I have a P4 1Ghz with a DVD drive and a CD-ROM burner. I have tried some programs that emulates CD drives and as a side-effect I have lost my CD-ROM burner. That is it is nowhere to be found on my system.
I have tried different forums but the advise I get is that I should install a the CD-ROM driver again and maybe install ASPI.
It might work but Im no computer wizard so I would like to hear a step by step describtion of what I should do in order to "find" my lost CD-ROM drive.
In advance, thanks.

Well its true try installing your driver. Sometimes that happens if you installed it allready it might need rebooting. If you want to refresh the drivers press F5, i think sometimes drives are hidden but i dont know how to bring it unhidden. It might not be found because one of your plugs are disconnected try looking through your system see if anything is unplugged.

check your device manager if you can find it there.
if it's there, check if it's any errors in properties.
else you can try and replug your cd-rom.

First, I opened the Regedit. There I opened the path: Hkey_Local_Machine/System/Current_control_set/control/class/4d36e965-e325-11ce......
When I clicked this one, I deleted lower Filter and upper Filter *This one you can find then on the right side of the regedit screen. After that I rebooted my PC and everything was fine.
I hope you understand this description, as my english isnīt that good and I donīt know many Computer releated words.

Actually your english is fine, dont worry about it.
Thank you for your advise. I deleted the filters and rebooted my PC but unfortunately the CD-ROM drive stille was there.
Well, thats life :)

Did you check your BIOS? It might be reseted. Make sure you have your Primary/Slave set correctly.

And I will add this: it's better that the DVD is master and the burner slave.
Also, I would suggest to use two different IDE cables to connect the burner and the DVD to the motherboard separately.

I looked in the device manager and the CD-ROM burner wasn't even listed. I have tried to replug the cables but without any changes.
Its ok to change slave/master settings but do keep in mind that it is not the main problem here as the drive worked fine for quite some time.
I tried to find a decent driver for my CD-ROM burner but it isn't that easy. My burner is a "Philips CDD-4801".
I have downloaded some drivers that I think match this drive but Im not exactly sure so if anyone would find me a driver that should be ok I would be very happy. I also need to know how to install it etc. just to be sure that Im not screwing up.

So did you check your BIOS Settings?

If you can't see it in the bios, it means it hasn't been plugged properly.
