Yo! The purple color dvd discs don't work for the ps2, i found out by trying to play my cousin's Contra for the ps2. It's the real game and I have heard that there are problems with the first generation ps2's and the purple sided disc. So I guess mine is one of them. Just wondering if there is a fix to it or am I outta luck? Heh, just did a test, ps1 original games don't work

Purple discs are cds, so are playstation 1 discs.
I would say that your playstation has trouble reading cds

Almost exactly a year after I got my first-gen PS2, it began having trouble reading discs. It mostly has trouble reading CDs, but it has had trouble reading DVDs as well.

My advice: Get a laser lens cleaner CD and run that in there a few times. You will have to try many times to get the laser lens cleaner to read if you are having trouble with CDs, but it should eventually work and it should help.

Also, thought it may sound funny, try standing your PS2 vertical while reading as opposed to horizontal (or vise-versa).

Also, even more funny, try starting your game with the PS2 upside down horizontal. Then once the game loads turn it back upright (carefully). Trust me, it can actually make a difference.

i've tried all the diff ways of standing it when i first tested out the cd-roms.

Scryaxxx, warrenty is well over and it isn't modded, so I guess i'll maybe try a lens cleaner, it's not that big of a deal for me since there aren't many ps2 games that are cd's and all the games I mainly play are rpgs, so they are all like dvd's

if the laser head is "dead" like you said, how come i can still play ps2 dvd games? or did you just mean that it's dying to the point of where it can't play cd games?

if so, is the only way to get it replaced is by sending it back to sony's repair warehouse or whatever it's called

for some reason the lens refuses to read cd or dvd disks. no one i have talked to from sony knows why (reps) but its usually the cds that stop working. it really sucks because the only way to fix it is like SCYRAXXX said is to buy a new lens kit. or a new system. but just so you know WhyBee, you are one of MANY people who have had this problem.

Re: WhyBee's comment

Yo! I found that the purple discs DO work if you put 2 pieces of scotch tape parallel to each other on either side of the inner hole. It seemed to be the source of all those nasty ripping/sliding sounds that might have come from your ps2 ;-\ -- the scotch tape allows the thing that grips the disc to grab it better.

Worked for my games, I was pissed about my Crazy Taxi until now!

Good luck and have fun

Sony know damn well that the first PS2s had an almost 100% failure rate of the dvd drives.
