new pc, need help!!!!!!!!!

I have a new pc, it boots up to a C:\ nothing else. There is a cd rom but I gather the drivers have not been installed all I can get Is C:\ or A:\. It is a Compaq Deskpro. I want to set it up to run windows 98, where do I start and what should I do.

Any help would be good.

I take it you are using a windows 98 boot disk and starting computer with cdrom support.
Or a windows 98 start up disk and just running setup from the options
might pay to give some more info as to how you are going about things

I have just inserted the win98 start up disk with cd rom support now what do I do

you have to go in the bios setup programme and make the computer start up from the CD drive, and not from the A drive or the C drive.

I think it's in the general settings, and most of the BIOS setups can be accessed by pressing Del when the comp counts the memory at startup.

Its ok guys I have sorted it. it looks as though the cd rom drive is faulty which is why what i was doing was not beng accepted

It's not necessary to do that.
It also works good to boot with a floppy disk with cd support.
