cant scandisk / defrag

ever since we had our new HDD put in we have had nothin but probs doin scandisks and defrags.

at the moment we have to go thru dos to scandisk and cant defrag what so ever... it get to something like 20% then restarts saying something bout a program is running which is stopping the defrag.

im using win98 and have tried norton to do the above but took hours upon hours to do... ive also closed all programs off using end-it-all

Try this:

1. Restart your system in Safe Mode.
a. Press when the system is booting.
b. You should get a menu with many options
1. Normal Mode
.....
Safe Mode
.....
c. Select the option "Safe Mode"
Now the computer starts with the minimal resources.
2. Click on the Start button
3. Go to Programs -- > Accessories -- > System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter
4. Select the drive you want to defragment, Click OK.
Note: Please do not perform any other tasks (open files etc) when defragmentation
is running.

Also make sure to run FULL scandisc before the defrag !

What about installing your OS over the one running at the moment, and maybe it will pick up on & repair any errors that may have caused your problems.

Here is a possible solution.

First make sure to disabled screen saver and power managment.

Then:
Go to Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box

On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
Hit apply and OK and restart Windows

This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag

Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows

Hope this will solve it !!

If it says that some programme is running, try simply to deactivate Norton Anti Virus.

don't think there is scandisk on XP. there is something similar though
start > run >chkdsk
