um i have written that in to the msdosprompt but then it says that the c: drive is in use because of the msdos prompt does anyone know what to do
If you are running an older machine, restart it into msdos - if you can't do that, then get a windows 98 boot disk, or just any old operating system cd (ie windows xp cd, windows 98 cd), and choose to boot from the cd then type in the command prompt format c: once you restart your computer with the cd/disk in the drive.

right, you can't format the drive when windows is in use
get a bootdisc by going to control panel -> add / remove programs - > bootdisc
or www.bootdisk.com
