why would U need to have a boot disk and if u do how will u know u need to use one.

I was talking generally about boot disk I have 2 games that are backed up and dont need boot disk is this common?
I also have one that when played in my psx(pal) it comes up as a black screen with a thick grey line is this because I need a boot disk and yes I have mod chip and yes I know I had to have a chip to play back ups thats why it is chipped hehehe thnx
