I recently bought a Athlon 1800+ with a Geforce 4 440MX gfx card.
When i try to install a large precentage of my games i recieve a "insert disk 0 cant find data3.cab" or words to that effect.
I searched the internet and some people said it was a problem with the Virus Checker but when i took it off it still happens.
I wrote a letter to PC Zone and they published it in this months issue (Jan) they said empty the temp folders.. i did and it still presists to mention this bloody "Data3.cab error"
I thought it might be something to do with my DVD/CDRom drive so i bought a normal CD Rom drive and its still doesnt work.
I have the utmost respect for everyone here at Megagames and you are my last hope.....

I forgot to mention i am running windows 98. However thats not the problem because i was running Win98 on my old Celleron and it worked then ....
Could be the actual hard drive. Do you have any partitions, or just one large drive? Does this happen for just games, or also programs?
Maybe you should try checking your hard drive for bad sectors or something of the sort?
I'm not saying this is a part of the problem, but you really should try updating your operating system. Win 9x is very unstable. If you can, try getting Win 2000 Pro, or XP Pro.

I just have one large drive! I also havent come across any programs (yet!) that have this problem.
As for your suggestion about upgrading to another OS which one would you suggest?

IMO, it sounds like a problem with the drive, but if that were the case, it would/should happen with everything you install, not just games. I would recommned checking for your hard drive for bad sectors/clusters.
As for the OS, I personally like Windows XP, but if you don't like that, try to get Windows 2000 at least.

It's probably either your CD is not clean or your CD Rom is wearing out. My recommendations are: try cleaning your installation CDs or CD-Rom. If it still doesn't work, try using another CD-Rom.

Thanks for the reply but its not just one disk that causes the problem. I also thought it might be my DVD/CD Rom drive so i bought another CD Rom and i still have the problem...
Thanks anyway

according to that link, it's fault on the cd rom.
if you have a burner, try install from that, then you can see if it's the cd rom (just don't wear it out).
