Australia easily won the second triangular series one-day match against England on Sunday but lost leg-spinner Shane Warne for the remainder of the Ashes series.

Warne dislocated his shoulder diving to stop a ball off his own bowling and will be out of action for four to six weeks at least. The fifth and final Ashes tests begins in Sydney on January 2 with the World Cup starting in South Africa in the following month.

The freak injury followed a record Australia total against England in a one-day international when they smashed 318 for six from their 50 overs.

Captain Ricky Ponting (119) and Adam Gilchrist (124) shared a record Australia partnership of 225 for the second wicket against any team.

England opener Nick Knight, fresh from an unbeaten 111 in Friday's loss to Australia in Sydney, made 70 on Sunday in England's reply of 229 all out in 48 overs. Australia's total was their highest against England, beating the previous mark of 283 for five in Brisbane in 1990-91.

It was also Australia's ninth consecutive win in one-day internationals against England and Nasser Hussain's side have yet to record a win after 13 matches and eight weeks in Australia.

Irani Duck

Man-of-the-match Gilchrist smashed 124 from 104 balls and Ponting hit 119 from 123 balls, adding 225 for the second wicket from 206 balls after Australia opener Matthew Hayden was out to the bowling of James Kirtley for four in the third over.

Australia's previous best for any partnership in one-day internationals was the 224 by Dean Jones and Allan Border for the third wicket against Sri Lanka in Adelaide in 1984-85.

England's innings started badly with Marcus Trescothick was out for six and Ronnie Irani run out for his second successive duck.

Hussain put on 60 for the third wicket with Knight, scoring 19 before he became one of Warne's two victims. Craig White (57 not out) and Ian Blackwell (43) put on 72 for seventh wicket in 84 balls to carry England's total beyond 200. Blackwell's 54-ball innings of 43 including two fours and two sixes for England, who suffered from three run outs.

Warne was carried from the field on a stretcher, clutching his right shoulder in pain in front of a home crowd of 34,887.

The second leading wicket-taker in test history dived to try to field a ball off his own bowling in his eighth over, landing heavily on his right arm.

Injured Shoulder

Australian Cricket Board (ACB) physiotherapist Errol Alcott said Warne's injured right shoulder had been put back into place in the dressing rooms and he would see a specialist.

"It was put back in by the ACB medical (staff) and it went in pretty well so we're happy about that," Alcott said in a television interview.

"Now we need to just wait and see if there is any further damage. First of all we need to establish if there is any bony injury so we need to get some plain x-rays done on it and then he'll be seen by a shoulder specialist who's actually done his surgery before.

"Our main concern is his prior history. He's had surgery on that shoulder before so we need to have a look and see if there is perhaps further damage done to that already damaged joint.

"We're looking at four to six weeks (out) to start with. He might be (out for) more than six (weeks) but it depends if there is anything else injured. If there is something more then we'd probably have to add on the weeks."

Ponting told reporters: "It's pretty safe to say he will be out for quite a while yet. It was a sad thing to happen in a great game and we don't know the full extent of it yet.

"We probably won't know until late tonight or early tomorrow morning how bad it is."

Hussain said world cricket needed the spinner in full flight.

"Let's hope it's not serious because he got himself really fit," Hussain said.

"He had a shoulder problem a few years ago which he's just now coming back from and bowling exactly how Shane Warne wants to bowl.

"There must have been a lot of hard work and effort put in to be where he is now and let's hope it's not too serious because world cricket needs Warnie bowling the way he has done in the last few months."

Promoted opener Darren Lehmann has scored a century at a run a ball to help Australia crush Sri Lanka by 142 runs in a triangular series one-day match and return to the top of the competition standings.

Lehmann smashed 12 fours and a six to top-score with 119 on Sunday as Australia amassed a record 305 for five from 50 overs.

Their total was their highest against any team at the WACA in Perth.

The Sri Lankans, yet to win a game in the tournament after twice losing to England, then crumbled to 163 all out in 43 overs to hand the Australians their third successive win.

The left-handed Lehmann, promoted to open the batting in place of the injured Adam Gilchrist, scored his third one-day international century but his first on home soil.

Lehmann, who has struggled for runs in the test team after replacing Mark Waugh, said his century had given him extra confidence heading into next week's fourth Ashes test with England.

"It is always good to get runs, especially leading into a Boxing Day test match," Lehmann said.

'Big Score'

"The last three or four weeks I have hit the ball really well so it was good to get a big score. Hopefully, I can get a big score in the next test match.

"There's no secret -- you have to score runs to stay in the side because there are so many good players around the place that are putting pressure on you."

Lehmann was well supported by Matthew Hayden, who made 64 in an opening stand of 162, and the reliable Michael Bevan, who made an unbeaten 40 in just 41 balls to guide the Australians past 300.

The only Sri Lankan bowler to trouble the Australians was paceman Prabath Nissanka, who captured three wickets for 54 runs in eight overs.

After Australia won the toss, Lehmann wasted no time adjusting to his new position as he and Hayden tore into the Sri Lankans.

Hitting boundaries to all parts of the ground, the two left-handers put on 100 in 76 minutes, Lehmann reaching his half-century off 46 balls and Hayden getting his from 54 balls with a six off Pulasthi Gunaratne.

Tempo Maintained

Hayden departed for 64 when he was caught by Mahela Jayawardene but Lehmann maintained the tempo to reach his hundred off exactly 100 balls.

Nissanka briefly put the brakes on Australia's run-spree when he dismissed Ricky Ponting (17), Lehmann and Damien Martyn (nine) as the home side slipped from 202-1 to 223-4 before Bevan's late burst ensured them of another big total.

Sri Lanka made a poor start to their reply when they lost their first five wickets for 62 runs.

Captain Sanath Jayasuriya (three), opener Marvan Atapattu (15) and Jehan Mubarak (four) all departed cheaply before the match was briefly interrupted by rain.

Things did not improve for the Sri Lankans after the re-start with Jayawardene (21) and Russel Arnold (15) falling to loose shots.

Wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana, with 35, and Kumar Sangakkara, with 40, restored some respectability to the innings with a 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket but their dismissals triggered a late collapse.

The Sri Lankans lost their last five wickets for just 23 runs as fast bowler Brett Lee and all-rounder Shane Watson picked up three wickets apiece.

The one-day series stops for the next two and a half weeks while the final two Ashes tests between Australia and England are played before resuming on January 9.

Australia lead the series with 17 points from three games, ahead of England on 12 from four matches and Sri Lanka one from three.

main side? you talking bout the 75 run loss (or whatever it was) a day or 2 ago?

hmmm well we do need help there... i saw that tho as being a mix of the main team and "A" team which probably backfired due to different game styles n all.

Rampant Sri Lanka Down Australia

World champions Australia have conceded their highest ever total in one-day internationals as they slumped to defeat by 79 runs against Sri Lanka.

Captain Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu smashed centuries in a record opening stand to help the Sri Lankans pile up 343 for five before the hosts were bowled out for 264 on Thursday.

Jayasuriya's slow left-arm spinners did the damage with the ball, the 33-year-old taking four for 39 to earn the man of the match award and keep alive his side's chances of reaching the finals.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who won the toss, compared the loss to his side's seven-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy semi-final four months ago.

"When you send someone in and they make 340 you probably regret that decision," the captain told reporters.

"The wicket had a little bit of grass on it and we had a few chances. It was a very bad one (loss).

"It wasn't just a few mistakes we made, there were a lot of mistakes made tonight. We fielded poorly, we didn't bowl well.

"Whenever you get beaten by 70 or 80 runs it's always a pretty ordinary result in one-day cricket. Tonight's right up there with the worst, that's for sure."

The win was Sri Lanka's first from four matches in the tournament, while the defeat was Australia's first after three victories last month.

Australia lead the standings with 17 points from England on 12 and Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for just 65 by Australia A two days ago, on seven. Australia take on England in Hobart on Saturday.

Sri Lanka were buoyed by the return from injury of off- spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who took his 299th one-day international wicket on the way to figures of two for 44.

Atapattu made 101 and Jayasuriya clubbed four sixes and 12 fours in his 122. The pair added 237 runs in 34 overs, plundering an attack missing fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie and leg-spinner Shane Warne.

The stand was the highest by a Sri Lankan pair in one-day internationals, beating the 226 for the third wicket by Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene against India last year.

Sri Lanka's total was also the highest by any team in a one-day international at Sydney Cricket Ground, surpassing Australia's 337 for seven against Pakistan in 1999-2000. The previous highest total against Australia in a limited-overs international was 326 for three by South Africa in Port Elizabeth last March.

Badly Dropped

Jayasuriya, who was bowled by a Brett Lee no-ball when on two and badly dropped twice, was finally out bowled by Watson as he tried an ambitious drive. It was his 14th century in 284 one-day internationals.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist dropped Atapattu on 83 before the 32-year-old reached his eighth one-day century, including five boundaries from 121 balls.

The right-hander was run out with the total on 283 for three and Russel Arnold was stumped off Andrew Symonds first ball as Sri Lanka's chances of beating their world record total of 398 for five against Kenya in 1995-96 disappeared.

Australia lost Gilchrist to the third ball of their innings, bowled by Chaminda Vaas for six, and Matthew Hayden (35) and Ponting (15) followed quickly to leave the hosts on 105 for three after 20 overs.

Damien Martyn (40) and Michael Bevan (41) fell to Jayasuriya before Symonds became Muralitharan's 298th victim.

Jimmy Maher slogged a catch to Jayawardene for 15 and Lee was bowled by Jayasuriya for 20 before Brad Hogg avoided the hat-trick.

Watson (35 not out) and Andy Bichel (28) shared an Australia record 10th-wicket partnership of 63, but it was far too late to change the course of the match.
