Help with backups for Playstation2

Hello,
I am very new to Playstaion2 backups. We just got the game and I know I will need a modchip to play the backups, so which chip is the best all around and where should I get it? I am in the USA.
My next question is will I be able to burn the PS2 games straight from the PS2 game to my cd-r without any patches? I do have cdclone software. I thought I read where there are 2 different types of playstaion2 games and to look at the color of playstaion2 game cd?

you should be able to copy games without any patches with help of clone cd.
