I don't know if anyone else is getting this but me, but lately, I've been getting explorer crashes when looking at certain AVI files. The last couple of releases by Dattebayo Anime (subbers) are good examples. I think they went to a wide screen format, and somehow explorer really hates it. It's not a huge issue, because it just restarts in a few seconds, but it is very annoying.
Anyone else getting this? Anyone know how to fix it?

I had a similar issue with previews on Vista, it kept on crashing "COM Surrogate" everytime I went to view any folders with Vids in and then crashed explorer, it turned out to be conflicting codec packs and some Nero thing.
I had to completely uninstall Nero and get rid off all of my codec packs and found a better codec pack that provided everything I needed. :)

Thanks all, problem solved. I had XP Codec Pack 1.3.1 (or something close) and I upgraded that to XP Codec Pack 2.3.7, and now all is well!
Many thanks.

I didn't read well your post first time so I didn't have correct guiadance for your prob. I thought you had that prob everytime you opened any file in explorer
Didn't read the part that said AVI files. I guess thats the prob reading the post too fast sorry
I guess you had that prob reading the files with WMP or Real Player right. Those players tend to be lacking of codecs a lot or already have for example the AVi support but the codec get obsolete (coz newer versions of codecs released) very fast and you have get newer ones. Or fail to open no so standard video format. I personally dislike searching bunch of codecs on the net
These ones could be useful to open several video format without searching for so many codecs. Also could some that could fail to open. But work on several. Could not be so nice on the gui. But I personally don't like bloated players that take lots of resources with unuseful functions

If you have some files with not very standard video format maybe help you later

No problem with missing the avi bit and thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at them, although with the XP codec pack, I have yet to find a video file that I can't play, but you're right, it could always come in handy!
