Well first this is NOT a support question or answer just something thing I think about the Wine Simulator for Linux/Unix
systems
I have seen and stil see on a lot of Linux forums things like "Wine it's crap coz don run x windows app" or wine is bad coz don't run well x game" and all that bad comments
But differeent to all those coments that lot fof linux users make constantly I feel some admiration for that guys on that project
First a thing those haters don't take in mind whne thw wine project was created in 1993 was that the benefits of was not gonna be on a short time period was gonna be in several years after
Also Wine works different fron commercial software. It will never be a moment whn Wine will get a stable release or a maduration in code (like For exmaple M$ Office x times of fix the glitches, vulnerabities the code get most fixed support dumped years later and move to the next version of Ofiice)
Wine for the contrary was made with the intention of a constant process of update that will never ends of get final version. More like a research project for long years
So in the update process some newer apps that didn't work could get work again andf the ones tht previously worked some could no longer be functional in the new wine version
Lots of open source software is that way (just look how soft installers get obsoletes every distro upgrade)
Also most distros forums there is no official tech support all is community based. It's NOT M$ or Adobe or Corel tech support .What you are getting with LInux is not comercial software. So those angry complains are not really valid since here there are not paying for x company software ( In the case of cedega or Crossover officethis can be valid since this commercial software) Wine NOT (man even the wine code is used on both commercial simulatore previously mentioned). Also the distros just package wine for their distribution. Wine project just make it for most of them. So in other words the developers at x distro just make the installer and make it compatible for they distro so they didn't do the prog that make it more rididiculus this complain on Linux communites
I for the contrary admire this guys in the wine project how the can make some windows progs works ( it a miracle get them to work those windows apps on a Linux system since are not really in the native enviroment and Linux works in way different) and they also have implement a lot of the windows api functions on Linux even when the Windows code have been very closed for decades with only a few specifications
I like how has wine improved on a few years from previous updates. In 2006 most windows apps I put on it the installers took ages even hours to install now take few minutes most of them not so much difference anymore from a native Windows anymore. Also the hack the system down download dlls change setup files to get the installer to work are lots less frequent now
I now can get to work Windows apps like Ares galaxy, Ultraiso, Magic Iso, Winrar, very function most of them even some Windows versions browsers like Firefox, Opera. THis didn't work still some months back and man people still say wine it's' crap?
For the gamming side maye wine still need improvement but I tested wine again on some games (coz Cedega don't to work to work again since I upgraded Mandriva form 2008.0 to 2008.1 Spring and I havent dedicated time to fix this either I can boot PCLOS in this one Cedega work but I sometimes have lazynes to reboot the whole system)
And I used Wine on Diablo 2 and ran pretty fine compared the last time i used it ( the graphics look abit less looking than Cedega but fine like simi,ar to what looked on Windows XP) The previous time I had to tweak some thing to get Diablo to work and change to 2d mode) Now I didn't do nothing than Launch diablo 2 with wine in executable and worked. ( The res no longer need to be manually put down like previous time even I had to tweak that on cedega) and the perfomance was fine only a bit slow than cedega on some parts but not very noticeable (was even better than native Windows xp coz on it used to slowdown on some parts on Mandriva generally maintain the same speed most of the time with a lot of crap loaaded) Also tried Sacred, worked also very wel (first tries wine time ago Sacred played very slow the intro and when loading the save didn't even launched) Now worked very well and bit slow too than cedega but very good with no graphic glitches
Temple of Elemental Evil Space Colony, and Locomotion didn't workon wine but well this ones works fine on cedega I still can put them on Cedega on PCLOS
BUt back on topic this wine complains the users make are just stupid. If people hate coz want more native or 3d functions this is very fixable very easy (It's true a lot of apps still don't work and will take time to work) But the fix to it is very easy They can return to their Winbloze Oses if they want nobody forced them to come to Linux, or can have another pc exclusively to have Windows and their apps on it. Put Windows on Vmware/Virtualbox or or make dual boot between Linux and Windows XP /Vista( i was that way some months back and If Mandriva has something good is that is very easy make dual boot with Windows detect the NTFS partitions and make the entries in grub and the fstab file near autiomatic but I now this can be diferent from every distro)
But with this they can get their native win apps to work again very easy and stop their stupid wine complaining that is really very ungrateful to the people on the project that don't even charge for it and have make better for the Linux users and bad support from some (but NOT all coz I don't like stereotyphes either some comercial soft companies have good Linux support)) Comercial Software companies that will never will a a native Linux app
systems
