a couple of things to try,
1 - check to see what region your drive is set at, it may be set too the wrong region for your country
2 - check to see if Windows has recognised the drive as a dvd drive and not as a cd-rom, try checking for new hardware
3 - look for a driver for the dvd drive, apparently some do need a driver (this is just what i have heard, i was told this when trying to get a Samsung dvd-drive to work, a search on the net for it only produced other requests for it.)

Why don't you go here (http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/download/download.jsp) and download the DVD drivers for XP
