Hi guys im having a big problem with windows Xp currently.
It takes about 5 mins to load up and 5 mins to shutdown, when shutting down it stays on my desktop screen frozen for about 5 mins then the A:\ floppy drive buzzes a bit then it shuts down.
The only alterations I made prior to this occuring was ;

1. Installed Mcafee Antivirus 7.0 (Didnt have another virus program)
2. Installed CRITICAL UPDATES from microsoft for windows XP.

Ive tried uninstalling both of the above but my system is still not functioning correctly.

Other things to note are, taskbar keeps disappearing and minimising when it likes, Internet explorer freezes occasionally, my firewall wont turn back on (I turned it off only to play games on gamespy) and finally I got redirected to a webpage with nothing but 1 line saying I dont like you... in the top left then my computer froze up.

Ive ran virus scan, defragger, internet clean up and everything, theres no hardware conflicts or anything Ive even used system restore to restore to before this started but to no avail.

ANY IDEAS LADS? Absolutely any advice would be appreciated because my knowledge on viruses, etc. is limited. Thanks for your time.

Hey, Try this.

Go to start menu, click on "Run" and type in "msconfig"
Once MS Config is open, click on the "startup" tab and disable all the check box's in that list.

reboot and see if its any faster.
if its not then make sure you re-enable the checkbox's on that list.

if it does help, see whats on the list and look for anything suppicoise, try enable just a couple and work your way through untill you find the one that is slowing down your computer.

Hope this helps.

u can try this little apps

http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/BootVis.asp

may help ya

or if ya brave and know wot ya doing try this

First of all, this tweak only apply to those who only have one HDD on their primary IDE channel (nothing else on device 0 or 1) and a CD-ROM and/or DVD-ROM on the secondary IDE channel. Each time you boot Windows XP, there's an updated file called NTOSBOOT-*.pf who appears in your prefetch directory (%SystemRoot%\Prefetch) and there's no need to erease any other files as the new prefetch option in XP really improves loading time of installed programs. We only want WindowsXP to boot faster and not decrease its performance.

the result in an EXTREMELY fast bootup:

1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\
2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.
4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".
10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.
11. Reboot your computer.

WindowsXP should now boot REALLY faster.

good luck
WindowsXP should now boot REALLY faster.

May I Thank the two guys above for thier time and advice both came in very useful. Now Windows XP boots up real fast and runs smoother because indeed thier seemed to be a malicious program running at startup that kept freezing my screen, I have found and deleted it with your help guys. MAny thanks.
The only little problem left is when I click shutdown the screen stays on my desktop for about 30 seconds then the floppy drive whirrs like its trying to save something. Then it says windows is saving your settings and shutting down but it takes about 5 mins to shut itself off.
Any1 got any ideas about this?

MANY THANKS GUYS, TOP MEN.

Thanks for the link for that software m8, works a treat and XP now loads real quick.

BUT theres now a bigger problem with shutting down XP.
When I click shutdown, my icons and taskbar disappears like it does when its about to shutdown BUT the background stays on and thats as far as it goes. My system wont shut down it gets as far as that then stops. My mouse pointer stays functional and moves but I cant click anything nor ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager to see whats still running. I have to pull the mains out to shut it down as the reset button also doesnt reset it.

Any ideas about why it wont shutdown past this point?

Cheers lads for your time, help and advice.

what i did when i had a problem simular to that was i formatted the hard drive and re installed widnows xp and i wouldn't recommend re installing those programs that you installed before unless the problem you had was before you installed them
