A friend of mine gave me his Hd to look at and it comes up with a blue screen? so the tech info says the following:
***stop: 0x0000007b ( 0xfe3c9640, 0x00000034, 0x000000000, 0x000000000)
as soon as it gets to the xp loading logo it goes to the blue screen and it does the same when i try to use command prompt
can anyone help?

Il paste what i said in the pm..
so others can see what ive said. saves repeating.
and they will know what you may have tried so far.
-edit-
i cant use safe mode or command prompt its just goes straight to the blue screen when i click either of them
Shambles has pretty much covered everything that could be wrong with your drive. Good job sham. :)

if u r forced to repartition and format yes...
A "repair install" however, will just reinstall the core O/S files, not causing him to lose his files.

ok thnx
also iam gonna be putting in a second hd during the week and iam gonna put it as cs, so my question is can i use both hd's at the same time?
Yes. Whether you use Cable Select or Master/Slave settings doesn't matter, as long as you have them plugged in in the right place.

back to the hd problem
ive found the disk and put the hd as boot 1, when i press on automated recovery it comes up with:
please insert the disk labeled: windows automated system recovery floopy disk
but i dont have a disk. also when i press r (repair) and press 1 for the hd it goes to C:\Windows> what do i type in?
ps dont worry i just remembered what i need to type in, silly me lol
ok ive got it working now
well first i typed chkdsk /r to repair it and that took around an hour to complete, but still the same result the blue screen still come on.
so i stalled xp over the other xp and the hd worked after that, i even got to keep his files.
ive done well i think, it would prolly cost him alot of money if he took it to a computer shop.

You should have typed "fixmbr"
See if that fixed it before the reinstall...
would have ment no need to reinstall xp, and there fore not need to update..
Its a litle late now..
but i should have told you than these dasys u really need xp with sp1/sp2 intergrated.
Not only to reduce updates needed..
But also so windows can correctly identify large hard disks.
If all is good then its no problem :)
Glad its fixed.
ive got sp2 on my main computer
also ive install a second hd which is 20 gig ive put it as pk whatever that means and so i go to properties to see the available space but only says max is 10gig do u know whats wrong?

diagram 1 is how ive set it up, but the 2nd hd is on pk
well on the back of the 2nd hd its only got pk,cs and ds(master) and the 2nd hd is in my main computer, so do u reken i should change it all to cs? only my main hd has the updates not the 2nd.

You can partition drive in windows..
You need to go to admin tools which are in controll panel.
then to disk management.
and you can do it there.
is there something i can type in using command prompt?
i went to admin settings, but didnt see anything about hd partition

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
Personally, I like their LiveCD for partitioning drives.

I'm sorta wondering if the drive is going bad. Usually the first thing I'd do is run over to the manufacturer's website and conduct a quick analysis using one of their tools.
