Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been here :x

Maybe you can help me with a problem of mine? I'm using Vista.

My hard disk froze on me yesterday. I'm not sure if it was a head crash or not, but it appears that the data is still intact (I can open up my entire music collection but none of my applications work, i.e. 3DMark). I cannot access any of my other files without first changing the User Permissions for each and every file on the file's security tab. I tried changing the entire folder's permission settings with the respective options in the security tab, but those settings won't stick. Is there a way to batch process the security settings for all files in a specific folder?

I am listed as the owner of the data, but I am not listed under users under permissions. Instead, some random string of numbers is.

Thanks in advance!

Do this:

Right click in the folder - security then the advanced tab the click edit appears another similar screen clik edit again then select the option that says "full control" then click ok then click on apply and the ok you will be on the security tab again so now choose in the options the securirty tab (NOT the advanced one this time) ) click on edit in the permission tab click on full control then apply then ok then you return to the secuirty tab and there click on apply and click ok too

Hope this help

Man Vista is a pain to configure the permissions in the folders I have seen even Linux Distrors where is more easy do this

Thanks for the quick reply!

I had tried the steps you outlined earlier (it was one of the first steps I had taken, aside from running chkdsk), but that didn't work. It appears as if you have to go one step further - I had to hit "Advanced" from the security tab, then "Edit", then I had to check the box "Replace all existing inheritable permissions on all descendants with inheritable permissions from this object".

Complicated, I know. But it's all working now. I'm guessing I had a head crash that involved some of the sectors that contained the permissions data. Once I was able to run chkdsk and reset my permissions, I could access my files again. I hope this helps anyone else who had this problem...
