You should put a little more info

Is there any error mesages whne you turn on the machine or something?

BIOS errors?

If you just wanna recover your files and don't fix the problem of your machine some programs like easy recovery pro or similar could help you but you will need to create a rescue disk to boot from the startup to access your hd data d since for what you said windows should not start

Could you post your spec and (as suggested above) any error messages you have, something more descriptive of the problem.

If your OS is FUBAR then recovering files may be difficult.

Can you get into safe mode (F8 on startup)?

If you can't, you may want to try doing a repair install with your Windows disc - that will put the base Windows files back on your system, while not forcing you to reformat the disc (and surely lose your files).

I would assume that it's an issue of malware. If you can get your machine up and running again, run all the typical scans (virus, adware, and spyware), and see if that does anything to help.

If you had a desktop you could overclock it but on a laptop its not advisible as they got crap cooling (hence I bought a cooler for mine so I can game without it freezing dew to excess/trapped heat build up)

As for not booting I would try what DIP said and try to get into safe mode. If uo can look for Ad-Aware SE personal, Spybot: Search & Destory and your antivirus program. Update them all if you can, scan and see if anytihng is found.

How old is the laptop by the way?
Could also be a part inside has failed...We need to know more info, exact error messages, blue screens, system spec and laptop model all might help us to help you :)

Sorry to revivate this old thread but might help to somebody with a similar problem. When Windows is crashed and don't enter even in safe mode or " previously known configuration option or craps like that. You can boot from the Ubuntu Live Cd (You don't even need to install it) Now has an option that automount/detect your windows partitions and you can access them to copy you important data to USB flash memories or something. I actually find this way better is than Easy recovery pro coz this program boot in DOS mode and some file formats like word, excel documents don't recover well sometimes you loose the text formating or things like that)l (I guess is because Dos recovery software disk having problems reading a NFTS partition) and some burn to CD/DVD options are pretty limited on easy recovery) Also this program is very expensive . I don't if has improved since last time i used it but that way was) and then with the data recovered yon can decide if reformat or reinstall your windows without important data loss) but is the harddrive is postmortem well that is another thing

The recovery console can help to recover windows yes but if the partition is really corrupted could put your existing partition down to hell i'd go for backup important personal data first and repair partition or other things later

Apologies for keeping this going but this happened my desktop lol.

Dad was checking emails and then pc just froze, the next few days i booted it would freeze within the first 10 minutes...took it to the place it was bought and turns out mobo was fooked >.<

And because its a Socket A 8x AGP its difficult to find one thats not Micro ATX etc etc...He (and I would prefer this) suggest upgrading everything (CPU/MOBO/GPU/RAM to DDR2) but as I am trying to buy a car lately i WONT be paying a penny for the old Heap-O-Crap...Anyway im tryna find a mobo that fits (Old one was Gigabyte K400a 7VA Revision 2.0) the parts thats already in it :(

@ Acal, safe mode or anything, got into it a few times but freezes shortly after some minutes.

@ Shambles I DON'T want Micro ATX, lol if you read correctly I actualy said its difficult to find a board thats NOT micro ATX :p

I need a board thats 8x AGP, at least 2 (preferably 3 slots) for the RAM (DDR 400/PC3200) and Socket A to support an AMD 2200XP.

TBH I think the 'rents should go for an upgrade cause its getting to a stage the technology it was based on is extinct and in the future replacements will only be more difficult...

Ill give the site a go Shambles but am unsure if I know what im looking for really lol.

Aye ur right. I saw "A" but it was revision A >.<

I would buy new only TBH Shambles.

I only see this one:

I don't like the look of it though simply for the reason I can only have 2 DDR sticks. I would prefer to have 3 but meh this would do the parents I think. Could even sell the old AIW ATI 9800 Pro + Acessories and use the crappy onboard gfx :p

Thanks for the info Shambles but I need 8x AGP
(I have an AIW ATI 9800 Pro )

Think the ASROCK one might do me, if its ok by your standards. (maker wise)
