Question :

Is it possible to use win2k as a fileserver without being a domain server?

And will xp home edition users be able to login to the fileserver? Since they can't login into a domain server.

Thanks!

Yes and yes. :)

When you first setup a Windows 2000 Server, you will be taken through a Wizard that will allow you to set it up as a file server, if you already have it installed you can Demote/Premote the server from its current status but i'm unsure on how to do that.

If you want to browse files on the file server through XP Home, you can do it through "Run" on the start menu, just type the name of your file server, and the directory of the files you want to get to.

So it should look something like this, "\\nameoffileserver\filedirectory" without quotation marks.

As its XP Home obviously you can't domain it, so the file server will want some form of authentification, so you will need to enter a username and password familiar to the domain or file server.
