doom 3 cheats problem

I have read that to enable the cheats in doom 3 I have to type in "+set com_allowConsole 1" to the command line shortcut to the game, I do not really understand what this means. Any help would be much appreciated.

As far as I know for The PC version of Doom 3 all you need to do is hit ctrl+alt+tilde to bring down a handy little console that lets you type in the codes found on this website http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/doom3/hints.html

I have tried this during gameplay but nothing seems to happen.

1. Right click on the Doom 3 shortcut and go to properties
2. Where it says target just type in "+set com_allowConsole 1" after the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Doom 3\doom3.exe"

The final thing should look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Doom 3\doom3.exe" +set com_allowConsole 1

After you add it to the shortcut, you don't need to press ctrl+alt anymore. Just press the tilde button. That is the point of the shortcut, so you don't have to press ctrl+alt anymore.
