Can future directX10 games be played on a dx9 gpu(ex. ge7950)?

Yea same Q but with a mobility x1800 256mb card.

Not diffinitive but my understanding is you will need a directx10 card to play any directx10 game and also that the directx10 MAY NOT be backwards compatable with earlier DirectX versions. I have no sources or proof, but these are the rumors floating around the FC forum...

Well my understanding is that it WILL be backwards compatable, as with the update of DX8.1 to DX9.

I mean if it isn't backwards compatable, your gonna force millions of gamers to upgrade their graphics card, just so they can play the latest games. It's insane!

My understanding is that there are no current cards that "fully" support DX10. All the current cards will be able to run DX10, but will not be able to take full advantage of DX10 because of hardware and not so much software which the new DX10 cars will have.

What I read somewhere is that DX!0 won'tbe compatibe DX9 games. It will only have an emulation mode to run DX9 or prior games. So the perfomance is believed it will be more slow for that the emulation.

Yeah, this is what I was driving at too. But who knows, just may be some anti-MS FUD like Vista not being backwards compatable either. We shall see. But Random is right that no matter how they do it they will HAVE to be capable of playing DirectX9 and earlier games on Vista and DirectX10 cards.

Yes in some way emulation or not it will have to be compatible with some old games. All is still speculation.I don't know maybe in the future like the DOS BOX thing we wll need a 32 bit windows emulator to run 32 bit games on 64 bit processor or things like that

Windows XP x64 does have an emulator, called WOW64 so that you can run 32-bit code. I'm not too worried about DX10 having a software emulator to run older games. I doubt it will, but it doesn't bother me. I don't think the performance decrease (if any) would be noticable anyway.

Even if DX10 does emulate, as long as it plays with good performance and looks the same as DX9, i'm not particularly bothered as long as its backwards compatible. :p

I agree with you dude! Besides by the time Vista is out and they got a lot of the bugs fixed to where it is running smoothly along with DX10 it'll probably be close to the end of next year in which it'll give me some time to invest on a new DX10 capable card.

(Whilst keeping on topic I'll help you out bud)
I think that technically, DirectX 10 can be installed with a non-DirectX 10 graphics card. But obviously the DirectX 10 features won't work.... What do you think JN (...and anyone else ;))?

Edit:
Lol!

I think this must be true Is like when you have a videocard for example a radeon 9200 with direct x 8.1 support in hardware and driver and updated direct 9.0c support too but only in software so lack of features when playing some games different from a geforce 7800 or those expensive cards that have direct x 9.0c support in hardware and software so support more effects and features

Just click on this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

IMO all new DX10 games will let you play on them with DX9, but you won't see the full effects or have the frame rates.

Take this into account: call of duty is a dx9 game. but can dx 7 cards run it? ;)
