Down here in OZ we have VERY poor broadband. The high speed stuff is only in major cities, and as the slow version is no good for gameing I am still on dial-up.
So what's my problem? If you're on dial-up Steam sucks to high heaven. I will never buy another game that is associated with Steam/Valve.
In two years of having HL on my machine I have never been able to play CS with my LAN connection because I have had the download hang at 98%. I can't comunicate with Steam because they don't recognise my ID or Password, and can't create a new account because they do recognise my email....Every time I log on they "update" their platform. The timer says 1:30, but it takes 10:00. The "update" seems to bugger up all of my games even though I set them to "do not update auto". Then more frustration as I have to update the games to make them work off line again....STEAM SUCKS....
Bloody shame to, as I just played the "Dark Messiah" demo and it looks like a good game. It's just too bad that UBISOFT has gotten into bed with this Steam mob. Because of their association I won't be buying "Dark Messiah".
I just an old (60) gamer who wants to take his game home install it and play it, and maybe download a patch, or get one from a magazine later. IF I WANT TO - not because some retentive corporation says I have to....NOT HAPPY

Yeah Steam isn't exsactly ideal for use with 56K, but I generally do like it.

As far as I know DMO, only uses Steam for its multiplayer, the singleplayer part of the game doesn't need it. :)

That's quite a rant lol. But it's my understanding that Dark Messiah doesn't need Steam to play the offline version. But don't take my word for it and go out and buy the game. Check their forums or something first.

After you have made an update to the game, then close Steam and set it to not open after a reboot. Then disconnect from the net and play the game offline. No more updates ;)

Edit:
Beat me to it Random :)

Personally I've not had any problems with Steam either. I've used the backup feature too, although 17GB of games is a bit too much to store. I'd rather just re-install them and update the games. lol.

Fdjc4, I know it's gonna sound like a stupid question, but did you install Steam before using the backup? I forgot that the first time I had used the backup feature.

yes i did

but it doesnt matter B2P

ive searched the net and it seams the missing exe file in the backup is a common problem that was never fixed, users with more than a DVD's worth of backups is who it only happens to from what i have read.

Steam is fine to use, if you buy the CD's, then you don't have any problems with huge updates and downloading the game again when-ever you do format and re-install.

DoD:S came with the Silver HL2 package ... it's a one-time purchase (of $20 I believe) otherwise
