1. Alexei, Katie, Roscoe, and Wenda went shopping at the local discount chain store for some summer clothing. They each bought several items and had to pay 5% tax on everything.

Sale Prices
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shorts $12.84
Tank top $7.50
T-shirt $8.77
Jogging sneakers $21.99
Sports cap $9.99

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roscoe bought 2 pairs of shorts, a tank top, and a sports cap. He exchanged a shirt he'd bought previously and got a credit for $9.44 including tax. He had $4.11 left when he was finished.
Alexei bought one more pair of shorts than Roscoe, along with one T-shirt and a tank top. He ran short of cash and had to borrow an even $3.00 from Wenda, leaving him with 47 cents.
Wenda bought twice as many T-shirts as Alexei. She was the only one to buy sneakers. The new cap she purchased was identical to the one Katie acquired. She had $8 left when she got home.
Katie bought 3 items and spent $13.48 less than Roscoe did on his new purchases. She had $8.15 left at the end of her shopping trip.
How much money (to the nearest whole dollar) did each person have when they began the day's shopping excursion?

2. This year there has been a 10% increase in participation at the Summit School Annual Read-A-Thon. The school population has remained the same. Last year, 80% of the school's 550 students were involved in the event. Of the students who participated this year, 38 read just 1 or 2 books, 83 read 3 to 5 books, 172 read 6 to 9 books, and the rest read 10 or more books.
What percentage (to the nearest whole percent) of the participating students this year read more than 5 books for the Read-A-Thon?

3. Ankit, Heather, Kareem, Margaret, and Roger are each reading the same book for their school book report. The book's 12 chapters are each 11 pages long.
Heather planned to read half the book in two days. Now, she's halfway toward that goal.
Ankit has read 4 chapters so far.
Margaret has read 20 pages past the halfway mark.
Kareem is 25 pages past the halfway mark.
Roger has only two chapters to go.
