hello everyone,
i am about to reformat my older desktop computer. Its about 7 years old so it came installed with Windows ME(horrible OS I know) I bought the Windows XP Home upgrade edition and Windows XP has been installed for a few years now.
My question is: If I reformat my computer......will I have to reinstall Windows ME and then upgrade to Windows XP????
and will microsoft let me use the upgrade CD even though I used the CD once already?
thanks

If you already have XP installed on another machine then you can't install it on an extra machine. If you want to reinstall XP using the same disc, on the same machine then that's fine, and to do so: put the XP disc in the drive and boot from it. Follow the instructions on screen and at some point you will be prompted to insert your Windows ME disc into the drive. This is to verify that you qualify for the upgrade, and to make sure you have one of the valid discs.

If its only an upgrade edition like you said maybe yes you will need to re install Me since could be desgned only to upgrade a previous edition If its the normal CD setup of XP Home/Pro then no its not necessary to do it

The only difference is that before installation you will need to insert a previous edition of Windows into the disc drive. Once XP has verified the previous edition of Windows, the XP disc is to be reinserted, and installation will continue as normal.

I've head very dodgy things about XP Upgrade Edition, anyway out of all the versions of Windoes you could possible upgrade XP from, ME is by far the worst.
Windows 2K is the best to upgrade from.

When he is upgrading from ME to XP does he need to enter a CD key supplied with the ME or XP disc?
I think he could get a mates copy of XP home and use a key ME/XP upgrade key if indeed he has to enter a key when upgrading...

well its grey... He owns an upgrade package so he is, i think are entitled to xp but the thing is he would only be only using a mates disc to install it but still use his own CD key.
Dont know if its feasable but its worth a try

Actually, no. When you buy software, you're buying the license. As long as you use your own serial number, it's perfectly legal to install from any disc. It only becomes illegal when you do not have/use your own serial ...

Doubt it. The serial is probably meant for the "upgrade edition" ...
