I was wondering if anyone knew how to run the latest version of Half Life without Steam? i believe the latest verison is 1.1.2.0 What i trying to do is get the latest version of half-life so i can run Natural Selection 3.1 without steam. if i try to install it to half life 1.1.1.1( using the patch from Steamless.nl) it loads up fine but since half life has been updated by Valve, Natural Selection is looking for updated files, so the vgui wont work and thats a core part of the game. Any help would be apreecaited thanks :)

There's an entire thread on this. Use the search option and you'll find it.

If you dont have HL2, I think you can still install HL1 without steam.

i know that you can install it sepratly, but if read my first post im trying to get the updated version from valve to run without steam. i can grab the gcf files and extract them with GCFScape, but once i combined the half life gcf and the engine gcf, it wants to open steam. There must be some form of a workaround simlar to a steamless hl2, but way you do it with hl2 wouldnt not work with hl because the dirs are different and your using the orignial engine, not source.

i would assume that running hl2 without steam is almost the same as running the steam verison of hl1 without it, i would still lok into that thread, it prolly has many ideas for u to check into.

well if you read my first post you would understand stand what im tryind to do :) You see, in order to play the new version of Natural selection, you need the updated version of Half-Life in order to play it. The latest version stands at 1.1.2.0, with i found by opening up the half life gcf. Now i can play it on the older version with patch from www.steamlessproject.nl which patches half life up to 1.1.1.1. BUT the problem is, Natural Selection uses a newer version of VGUI, so the menu that pops up when you right click, doesnt show up. And that a core part of the game :redcool:

Well, Half Life 2 got out with a nice number of bugs. Especially tied to the Multiplayer. The worst part is that they repair some and add new ones. Kind like the Blizzard games(see Diablo, Warcraft,Starcraft). The Single Player part isn't yet bug free.So for some people, updates are important. Me, I stick at the original HalfLife. My bro has HalfLife2, he doesn't mind Steam. Me, I hate it. And the original HalfLife still has a better AI than the second HalfLife.
I admit that the graphics are quite something, but again I don't play graphics, I play games. And a game needs a good story,a nice atmosphere, a good soundtrack, a well implemented gameplay and a good AI. The original Sims still sells stronger than Sims2, and already a market for old games appeared. As I've mentioned before, in another thread, Vivendi(owner of Sierra and Blizzard) decided to get out most of the golden age titles of Sierra(the quest series for the start) adapted to XP.Because in the gran finale is what you get for the money spent. And in our days is only better graphics and no originality.

corrrrrect, the original HL was a nice game to play (i never finished it cause a: im a wusss, and b: i got newer games) anyway, good luck all who play it.
heck, i got 10x enjoyment from playing original Doom than i got from Doom3 - but there are many good, if not original, new games.

Until I know Hl1 don't need steam to install only to play on-line (was replaced with that when the WON Network was shutdown) and I don't see why one can a b i tch for playing older games I do myself and have the same fun as the new ones. That is a classical 12 years old inmature kid answer
