delete the junk *.tmp files in documents and setting\usrname\localconf\temp and the internet cach. Also if you have ac97 soundcard. sometimes using the sound hardware acceleration in full cause slowdowns in run type dxdiag and in the sound option reduce the acceleration to basic (bu remember only if soundcard is ac97 that means intergrated to the computer)
if all fails maybe the best bet will bebackup you personal data and reformat the computer. Also chek another programs to search for spyware like Xoftspy or something similar read other threads to look for other programs. Lavasoft Ad aware a lot of times lets a lot of spyware without detect even with the most newest updates
Also chek if your hardrive is not out of space

then update the drivers for it
Empty your temo files as acal also said and if push comes to shove and you get to performance difference then back your data up, all your created work, game saves, music, documents etc and format and reinstall windows....
How long is it since you last formatted (if ever)?
If you have never formattd how long have you had the pc then?

Easiest way to get to temp files is Start > Run > "%temp%"

What type RAM do you have in your computer now (e.g., PC3200) and how much?

Honestly, with the P4 you have, you can utilize DDR2 RAM. The fastest DDR is 400MHz. You'd honestly be best of spending $200 to get 2GB PC5400 memory (667MHz) and selling the chip of DDR you have now. Just my advice ... ;)

The suggestion about reformatting would be your best bet ... back everything you need to up on DVDs and reformat. To get totally set up again, it'll take about 6-8 hrs. Well worth the time, though, in my opinion.

6-8 hrs is a timeframe to get everything reinstalled and copied back over ... the actual format and reinstallation of the O/S takes about an hr

Formating sometimes isn't the thing that takes most of time. Backup the stuff and re-installing the programs is what takes lots oof hours

There is a partition magic software. Use it and it will do it in couple of minutes.
