could be a HDD problem, a group of bad sectors or a corrupted system file.
Try running disk check

Do you have an overheating problem? Try cleaning your CPU fan, also the cooling ribs underneath...

I'd say boot up into safe mode, back up your files, reformat ...

could be malware as well
spyboy and ad-aware personal i would recommend you scan with
as well as you installed antivirus program, update it and scan your computer to see if you find anything that may cause this.

a friend had the same problem....it was a virus...do a couple of scans in safe mode like dip said....and update your anti virus program.....

If all the above fails, grab your PC firmly with two hands lift it above your head and throw it out of the nearest window.
Then go down to your local PC shop and buy a top-of-the-range PC! :)
(My PC is really pissing me off ATM, damn crappy HD!)

If you have windowsXP put the cd in and goto start then run and type:
sfc.exe /scannow
*This will take a while to do but it will work if there is a system file error
This will repair any system files that are messed up.
If you still get the problem you could be over heating like someone said in an earlier post. Open the case and clean the dirt out of your fans and sinks.

Sounds like a RAM problem, try some different RAM.
(My PC is working again! Yay! :D)

I'd have to agree with Random, it sounds like a RAM problem. If you have more than one RAM module, try using one stick at a time until you find one that works. If this fails, do as Dip suggested and do a format.

could also be a power supply flaking out for that matter.

or take it out to the local shooting range, and have a little target practice. It's very relaxing

darth - The best way to determine if this problem is hardware/software related would be for you to reformat. Please do so in the next few days and report back to us if your computer is working again, because that will get your problem solved the fastest

No problem. I suggest the reformat because it will solve any problem that isn't hardware related. As someone else said, it could be an issue with your RAM. If you want, you could try to download a program called "memtest86" and run that (it's a diagnostic tool for your RAM) and see what that gets you before you do a full reformat, but a reformat never hurt anyone ;)
