I get a GRUB error 22.

I formatted over my Linux partition and I can't get my computer to boot up into Windows. I tried doing the "fixmbr" command, but that didn't work ... any ideas?

Yeah, you have Grub stuck in your MBR. Try putting in your Windows disc and see if you cant fix your install that way. I have never had this happen to me as I have always taken Windows off a dual boot and not Linux...who'd want to keep Windows?...yeah, I'll shut up. Let me think about this tonight DIP,, if I come up with anything I'll let you know tomorrow.

I tried the "fixmbr" and "fixboot" but the fixboot command gives me this error:

"Cannot find system drive or drive specified is not valid."

I can get into Windows using the Ultimate Boot CD, but I have to manually select which partition I want. I tried to reinstall GRUB from there (that's an option), but it wouldn't work.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Well, worst case is you install a minimal linux distro on a small partition and just use that grub, but there is a way to restore your windows MBR. I will ask around on the FC forum tomorrow, but I'm fixin to call it a night soon tonight.

edit: I believe you said you are trying to dual boot Vista with XP now? Do you think the Vista install would recognize the XP, when you installed Vista it would put it's own boot loader in the MBR anyway. How do you dual boot 2 windows versions? I do know they have third party boot loaders that are even freeware. If you were installing another Linux distro this wouldnt be a problem, you just overwrite the grub with the new distro and point it to the windows partition. Maybe you should think about multi-booting XP, Vista and another Linux distro. You really only need the Linux for the grub so you could go with something like damn small linux which is under 100MB or you could even keep the ubuntu. Just install the linux distro last.

UPDATE: I successfully installed Windows Vista, so I'm dualbooting that and XP Pro. The Windows bootloader overwrote the GRUB, so thanks JN4OldSchool.

I'm actually on Vista now. If anyone wants to try it out, I'd highly recommend it. It's pretty neat so far (it's only been up and running for 5 min, but I like what I see so far), so yeah
