Can somebody please point me in the right diection of an idiots guide or tell me how to set online gaming up on the PS2 through ICS. Every guide I have found so far has been ++++e and doesnt explain what you have to set up on the PC or the PS2 just how to plug it all in.
Ive got a crossover cable plugged into the PS2 and the Ethernet port on my PC. The PS2 cant detect my pc's IP address automatically so I manually typed it in but the testing phase alway fails on the DNS stage. Please can somebody help!!!!

Exactly what is "ICS"? What happens when connect the PS/2 to a hub/router/switch of some sort and try to play?

ICS is "Internet Connection Sharing", its not the best way to connect your PS2 to the internet but I do it and its good enough for me. :D
To keep this simple make the IP Address of the PC 192.168.0.1, and the IP Address of the PS2 to 192.168.0.2, the Subnet mask should auto generate on the PC to 255.255.255.0, the DNS should be the same IP as the PC so that would be 192.168.0.1, and alternate set it to 192.168.0.3.
Enter the corresponding settings into the PS2 configuration and it should work.

Is that a European thing? I've never heard of that here in the states ...

Lol! No ICS is a feature of Windows XP, its not suprising you've never heard of it though, people use routers rather than ICS, the only problem with it, is the host PC must be switched on when ever you want to use it elsewhere.
