Newbie question - Playing PAL on NTSC

I bought a PAL format game to play on my NTSC PS2. I have the Swap Magic disks and flip top and I can load and play the game just fine in PAL mode, but it plays in black and white. I can force it to NTSC mode and then get color, but the sound and graphics are off sync, making the game unplayable. I've seen PAL to NTSC converter boxes online, and I'm wondering if this will fix the color issue or not? If not, is there any way to play PAL games on NTSC in color?

Most TV's nowadays can play both pal and ntsc, just setting that up on your tv should do it.

Unfortunately my set doesn't have that option and I can't afford to buy a new one at the moment. (At least not a large screen projection TV like the one I have, and I would miss this one!) :D
