i thought id make a useful links thread, share what knowledge i have and learn from others also so here goes:

http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar

Here by far is the most useful link that i have ever found, it shows updates for all major and all decent protection software, updates for windows and even applications like MSN messenger etc.

If you run a windows OS this is the important site you should visit:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

It updates as far as im aware all windows OS from 98 to XP, you are directed to the proper site depending on your version. It also updates the Microsft Office packages. You should regurarly visit this site, at least once a month

The next most important thing, next to regular updating of your Operating Software is haveing an AntiVirus application installed, in most cases a new pc comes with Norton or McAfee usually, you only get updates free for a year though, in nortons case anyway. (there is a way around Norton i have recently found when i formatted - sorry mods if this is illegal to post, plz erase this part if so)
So once you have used your year of free updates you got three choices:
1. Backup all your data and FORMAT
2. Pay for another years subscription of updates, about £20-30 depending on your AntiVirus
3. Uninstall your pay AV and get a free one such as:

AVG
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
(id use ths one as i feel its easier to use and update)

or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

***You will need a valid email address to register these programs before use***

As many of you know and many others do not know spyware is a huge problem especially for Microsoft and they recently bought over an antispyware company and then presented us with MS antispy but its in beta stages.

I personally use this software and find its brilliant......yes a microsoft program for a change is THAT good. I have used a few programs that the install file is questionable, free from virus but maybe not spyware. Anyway i was installing a program (wont name it as its againts rules probably) and i had MS antispy running in background, it informed me a spyware program was also trying to install, with MS antiispy i was able to remove the spyware program before it could do any damage. As far as i am aware it supports all Windows operating programs from 98 to XP.

I have had absolutley no problems with this program but as it is BETA so that may be a factor for not using however i still do.

To download or read more on MS antispy go here:

I wont take away from NorthVikings Antispyware post, so here it is:
Here are some of the most popular and best anti-spyware progs.

AdAware - www.lavasoft.us (http://www.lavasoft.us/)

Spybot S&D - www.safer-networking.org (http://www.safer-networking.org/)

Spysweeper - www.spysweeper.com (http://www.spysweeper.com/)

HijackThis - http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html (Useful when your homepage or search page keeps changing) (Warning, do not delete anything if you aren't experienced. Deleting wrong things can mess up the computer !)

CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
(Direct link - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip)

Spywareblaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (this program will prevent
spywares from beeing installed, very neat prog)

Remember to keep the programs updated.

Info what spyware is http://www.spychecker.com/spyware.html

Another note on Spybot
there is an option to lock your home page and others such as search engine and so forth, it can also lock your settings so if you get a hijack then it wont effect your browser settings.

If on Dialup modem:
If you got a dialup modem you are susceptable to getting a porn or rogue dialler charging you premium rates for things you dont want. Spywareblaster/MS antispy i have found is useful for preventing these installing and Spybot/MS Antispy is great for scanning and uninstalling these malicous pieces of software

UPDATES FOR ALL THE PROGRAMS MENTIONED IN THIS POST CAN BE FOUND AT THE LINK AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE

and for those who are lazy ;) here it is again:
http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar

The main thing is that you dont need ALL of these programs but its good to have them, no need to have them all running at once, just one will do as they may conflict. I recommend Ad-aware also, its got the best scanning engine of the lot.

I hope this is useful to people both new and old to protecting there PC.
If anyone wishes to add a comment or even post details on another program they feel is useful, feel free to do so ;)
