View Full Version : Firefighters Strike
So wot u English people think bout it.....Do they deserve the 40% increase to £30,000 per year or do u think there being greedy asking 4 that much???
Im stuck in 2 minds because last year Tony Blair had a 40% increase and he said the firefighters dont deserve it whiel they risk thier lives everyday...But then again 40% is BIG increase.
Post ur views her!! ;)
Sad  They r allowed a pay raise, like everybody else in the uk....

yep .... i honestly think they are worth 30k per year easily.
an old woman died earlier tonight in a blaze so i hear, very sad. and all the little kids round here are setting bottle banks / paper banks on fire purposley, which i suspected might happen.
the government are nothing but a bunch of stuburn, tight fisted wankers as far as im concerned.

I agree with X-Cal, they deserve the money.

was thinking the same as x-cal as i was reading this thread... 40% is a lot but the peeps in politics need to ask what if its there house burning down... their family burning all because fire fighters quit to find better jobs (which who knows... they could)
wake up and pay the dollars... sounds like our ambulance drivers over here that get parking tickets while on emergency callout

I work in the public sector (Nurse) and you have to remember that 40% of 'not-a-lot' = 'not-a-lot'.
I hope they get it, it's a job i wouldn't like to do, and after that i would like a payrise that's above inflation for once myself!!!

all emergency services are in a tight position when it comes to negotiations... ask rogue and he would probably agree, they hate the thought of going on strike. Its probably been in front of the government for months now but the government thinks they will never go on strike... they're the emergency services.
well mr Blair... listen next time!

Hell yeah, they're prepared to put their lives on the line everyday...
Maybe Blair should take some of his billion squid donation to that south african murderer and give to the people who count.:cussing:

Striking is the only way to get the attention from public and government. That's the only way they can get a raise. 40% is not a lot. Remember this, they risk there lives for others every day.

40% is a hell of a big increse, and if the firefighters get an increse, then the police, the nurses, docters, teachers, and all other civil servents will start asking for a 40% increse. i admit that 21,000 is not much for that kind of job, but a 40% increse is a bit much.

FYI, 40% increase will give them approx 500 quid extra per month after tax.(actually that'll be a little bit less thanks to the mother of all taxes on a little bit of it-40% funnily enough).

anyone that risks their life in their day to day job deserves as much as they can get imo. Good luck to the firemen

You kidding!?!?!?
If footballers get what they get, then fireman deserve more than a 40% increase.
I know it's not the same thing, but look at ALL of Brazil's top footballers... they HAVE to give 50% of their salary to their country!!! I'm sure Mr. Beckham can spare £50.000 a week to give to his country. You do that with all footballers, the NHS, school's, hospital's, etc, will all get sorted.

no i kid you not... it was on SA-FM rumour mill (radio station segment) which was later verified by 3 ambulance drivers who have had to pay fines out of their OWN pockets... one of which got while while he treated a patient at a serious car smash (life and death) the ticket inspector walked up, had a look then booked the ambo

For all you people who keep saying "40% is too much", I'd like to see you go out there and do the job for 21,000 pound, which is the average wage over there for a firie. From my understanding that is barely above minimum wage!!
I'm a firie in Sydney, Australia. We get ok pay, nothing great but it pays my bills. However, more than half the New South Wales firies have no insurance.
Ever since our government changed the Superannuation and insurance scheme, any new firie joining the job has no insurance besides the ludicrously small amounts one can get out of our workers compensation scheme. That is barely enough to cover life and death medical bills and in no way covers any non life threatening medical needs. No private insurer will cover us either...regardless of how much we are willing to pay.....it's just too big a risk so they offer no cover at all!
We have been fighting the government for a fair insurance scheme for nearly 5 years now. We have done just about everything besides going out on a full strike. I wont be surprised if it comes to that soon though.
This job is dangerous. I know that every day I go to work I may not come home, or I may come home missing something like an arm or leg. We don't ask for the rediculously exhorbitant wages that politicians or sports stars are paid, but I'll be damned if I will risk my life for others every day and go home with **** all to show for it at the end of the day expect the satisfaction and warm fuzzy feeling of a job well done! We deserve fair pay and decent insurance at a fair price.
Ok, that's my rant ended and just in case anyone is unsure.....yes I support the UK firies and say good luck to them in getting a 40% pay rise. As rogueingreen said........"40% of not-a-lot = not-a-lot" so, in short they are not really asking for much.

Over the last week I've changed my mind on this.
Yes I definately think they should be paid more, BUT if they strike then they should be sacked on the spot.
Unions have far too much power and the liberties they take shouldn't be tolerated.

with the 8 day strike now in motion, its gonna cause carnage through the week, they should get a pay rise, if only to get them working again, they are putting to many lives at risk, now we all have to be really carefull in our homes because of a risk of fire.....fire has always been a risk but we have always had something to counter it, now that is pritty much gone, we're almost on our own. give them a rise, if it means that they're still prepared to save lives

that twat prescott has stoped the 16% increse which both the union, and the employers had signed, because it was 'too much', JUST SIGN THE 16% INCRESE AND WE'LL ALL BE HAPPY!
