HELP! patches - Newbie

Hello, you will probably think i am a bit thick but i am new to all this. Why do you need patches? Where do i get them?

This is in the wrong forum.. but anyhoo.. some people like to use nocd patches for games so they dont have to keep putting the disks into the drive to play and they dont have to keep swapping disks.. on the other hand you get patches for games that fix some things like bugs or adds new levels etc.. depends on what kind of patches you are reffering to :)
