can't play favorite games in XP

Hello Everyone, I really enjoy playing some of the older PC games like Desperados: Wanted dead or alive. but since I recently "upgraded" from windows 98 to Windows XP the bottom half of the game screen badly "flickers" while playing. On some games the sounds keep repeating themselves. Can this be corrected?
Some other older games still work fine but some won't even load anymore.
Are these games now useless? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

You may need to play the game using compatibility mode. Right click on the .exe and you should see the options in there.

If the games were designed for DOS should be good you use the DOSbox emulator works well with most of the orld MS-DOs games
