I have been having slowdown problems with my new computer and error windows messages every few time I boot up, as Im just new to the xp home sp2 version having used win98se for ages, Im a little worried that if I format my harddisk Im going to have problems installing everyting back on, Im used to formatting windows 98 se and drivers etc with no problems but XP home maybe a little different, I have already enabled xp home on the internet and Im worried that when I reinstall it will say something like somebody else has aready done this etc.

As the system was set up for me by hose I bought it from I actually think they had downloaded a virus because Ive only used the windows update and enabling thingie, yet if I took it to the shop they probably would say that Ive downloaded the virus and would charge me quite a bit to reinstall.

having siad all that, can you tell me what I can do and is it as simple as 98se, to fix, one other thing since heres no DOS anymore how do I formatt my harddisk and install from scratch???

Assuming that you have a REAL, Full Version of XP, you can boot your PC from the CD, and it will prompt you through the install process, including the FORMAT/PARTITION process.

yes I bought the original included with the computer, what I unsure about is the place I had the machine custom built has my details as just (owner), I want to change this to what I wish when doing a clean install, one other thing, do I just simply go into explorer use the format c: option, switch the machine off, put the windows cd in, follows the instuction install the drivers etc and that it?, will it want me to go online and activate it again, and will it accept it since Ive already activated it before??

Just boot your PC from scratch. (Check in your BIOS & make sure it is set to boot from CD-ROM first)

From there, it will prompt you for the rest. (You will probably have to activate again)

You'll have to activate again, but if you have a legal copy, you wont run into any problems. If the worst happens, just phone them and activate over the phone.
