Free Virus Scanner/Protector

Is there actually any out there? And i dont mean just scan your PC and clean it, i mean scanners that run as a background application, and protect your PC from viruses and trojans as they come.I ask because after downloading a cracked version of McAfee i find it was actually just a package containing alot of spyware software, and after i cleaned it all out, im a bit wary about downloading files.

if your a fan of downloading then i also recommend getting a firewall (dont know any free ones off hand, sorry)

but also i recommend spyware protection, if you dont have any already i mean:
NorthVikings spyware protection (http://www.mgforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25628)
spywareblaster is like a spyware firewall so stops it getting on pc from internet sites ans MS bets stops installation of it too

i mylsef use a few of them and also the MS beta found at:

And for a good Firewall, I would choose Zone Alarm
-Both very good programms, there were tests in PCGames (a german magazine) and they say that these 2 programms are the best freeware available
