I've been following that massive hl2 thread for a while now, and it's starting to give me a headache, so i thought i'd just ask my question in a new thread.
I've done everything according to wuyanxu's post http://www.mgforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=239312&postcount=2494
but for some reason with gizmas patcher i had to change all of the spaces " " in the gcf's filenames to underscores "_" but besides that everything went smoothly.
After completing all of hte steps, I started up half life 2 and it loaded the main screen like a charm, but as soon as i click start game, it just goes back to the main menu.
Anyone else have this problem or does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance
Clay

Alright, well since no one on these forums seems to have fixed this particular problem, i'm gonna go huntin on some other forums.

i may have just found something interesting, As i was browsing through the hl2 maps directory, there was an absence of files. There were 2 subfolders "graphs" and "soundcache" the graphs folder is empty and the soundcache is filled with .cache files.
I dont know if this in normal but it seemed very odd

hmm i don't have an idea how to solve this and in other forums i didn't find anything

by the way, when i click on the button to start a new game, the console says ...
"CModelLoader::Map_IsValid: No such map 'd1_trainstation_01'
map load failed: d1_trainstation_01 not found or invalid"

Hi, my game-version is the english DVD-Collectors Edition. Unfortunately I can´t get access to an internet connection with my gaming computer (NEVER EVER I fear). Therefore I experience difficulties while trying to make my HalfLife 1(!) Source run. Thanks to Gizma´s great gcf-decryptor (with the gcf-decryption keys within the *.cmd-file) in was easy to install HL2 and especially the not-encrypted CS-files. Nevertheless I´m still unable to install (decrypt) the file "halflife_1_sorce.gcf" while seeking a valid decryption-key. I haven´t found it here, neither it is in the "ClientRegistry.blob" posted at this forum.
Please, please... pleeeeaaaaseeee help me, I´m rather in despair since even the files extracted by the GCFScape-Decryptor seem corrupt. Maybe you have HalfLife 1 installed via Steam and your "ClientRegistry.blob" contains the valid decryption key? Is there any different working solution for my problem (I just have limited web-access in a internet-cafe)? Please let me visit City17 in HalfLife 1 Source... :graysad:
Thank you very very much in advance!!!

Hey guys, thought I'd give you a little help, I finally got my version of HL2 running, although there are still a few flaws I will get to in a moment. But the Graphs folder should have 76 files all ended with the .ain filetype, mine does anyways, number of files may vary. Next, the Soundcache folder, mine is filled with a lot of files ending with the .cache filetype and .manifest filetype.
Now is my problem, to get my version of HL2 working I used the multi-patch e-mailed to my by hunter087. It worked obviously, but there are 2 problems. All of my game menu's show up as "#GameUI_---" --- being what the menu name would usually be such as Friends, Options and so on. Could somebody please e-mail me their GameUI.dll file? I think it may be a corrupt file in my case. Also, during game play, I have no HUD readings of anykind. I have no health or ammo or anything showing up on my screen...again, hopefully the GameUI file, but if not...it has to be some of the sprites for the HUD in it's folder. I can e-mail the 4 part patch if anybody would like it to see what comes out.
Thanks, GuitarMan my e-mail is krenic.dung@gmail.com if anybody might have some idea or questions.

yeehaaa, for me it finally works now
i used the method of dr.mad (half.life.2_multi-language_patch.v1.2.drmad) and now i have a lot of files in the maps folder ... i'm not sure why it works now, but perhaps it was the difference that the gcf files came from the dvd (german version) and not from the installed game folder

Half-life 2 steamless install.
My name is "daGamesta", or Gamesta, for short. After just recently purchasing both HL2 and the HL platinum collection I was seriously dissappointed after trying to install HL2 and found out Steam would not work for me. :disgust: No matter how I tried, the game just wouldn't play at all until I was regestered with stupid Steam. I hate online games that make you do that. SO hate it. :disgust:
So I decided to go hunting down the Web for a crack or patch that would let me get around Steam's Iron curtain of game registratrion/installation. No matter how many cracks I found, none of them semed to work. :blacpuz And I couldn't get online to register, anyway!! :blacmad GRRRRRR!!!! I wasn't sure if it was my end of the connection or Valve's.
It wasn't until I got a bright idea to check out the coding in Gizma's patch that I figgured out my problem. And how simple it was! http://journals.jevon.org/img/user/russelm-3920-5a0072202e4.jpg
Now after several days and a few hours of ranting and murderous torture by the hands of Steam, I am on cloud Nine. And Steam and Valve can kiss my butt! I SO look forward to comleting my play of the entire half-life series!
And for those who may be as tortured as I was and frustrated with Steam, maybe this will help out.
Just follow these directions that follow in the next post and you’ll get an installation of half-life 2 that works without steam and works without the CD/dvd-checks!

Half-life 2 steamless install.
As I said above, just follow these directions and you’ll get an installation of half-life 2 that works without steam and works without the CD/dvd-checks.
First, you need following:
- Encrypted GCF files from original half-life 2 cds/DVD or from steam download.
- WinRar/Winzip archive manager (freeware)
- hlunp.exe tool (unpacker, part of this archive)
- steam.dll part (emulator, of this archive)
Getting encrypted GCF files
You'll need the following GCF's; copy them into a directory like C:\HL2\GCF and rename them to the following:
base source shared.gcf -> base_source_shared.gcf
base source shared materials.gcf -> base_source_shared_materials.gcf
base source shared models.gcf -> base_source_shared_models.gcf
base source shared sounds.gcf -> base_source_shared_sounds.gcf
and half-life 2 base content.gcf -> halflife_2_base_content.gcf
- This program should take care of that. If it doesn't you'll have to do it each one, manually. Just select the file in Windows Explorer, press F2 and eliminate the spaces and put in it's place the underscore.
- Or if you like to do it from the command prompt, type in:
ren "base source shared.gcf" base_source_shared.gcf
And Prest-o Change-O, it's magic! Get ready for the fun stuff!
- If you have installed but not activated half-life 2, these files are located in Steam\SteamApps directory. Copy all GCF files from there and uninstall steam and Half-life 2 completely.
- If you have the original DVD, then you can extract the GCF files from HL2x.CAB file. Start WinRar and open the hl2.cab file. Extract all files. Repeat this for hl22.cab – hl25.cab files. From every file extract all the files except the ones marked with “<--”.
Unpacking GCF files
- Make an empty folder where you want to install a game. I suggest something like C:\HL2\HL2_source . Then execute the provided unpackhl2.cmd command with parameters “unpackhl2.cmd <Path to directory with GCF files> <Path to target directory>”. You need to type this in command line prompt.
It should look like this:
C:\HL2\HL2_source>unpackhl2.cmd C:\HL2\GCF C:\HL2\HL2_source
If you don’t know what command-line is, use the provided shortcut. Just type in the location of your HL2 GCF files and this command.
- Wait awhile (about 10 minutes) and you will get a folder “root” created in the directory you specified. Look, there's a file called “hl2.exe” inside!
- Copy the provided steam.dll into the “root\bin” folder (it is a “bin” folder just next to hl2.exe file).
- Create a shortcut to hl2.exe file (right-click on it and select "create shortcut" then right-click on the shortcut and select properties, and click the shortcut tab) with the parameters “-steam” (change the target to say : C:\HL2\HL2_source\HL2.exe -steam ).
Congratulations, you just created a playable half-life 2 installation that does not require stupid steam or CD/dvd or internet connection to play. Notice that we never even installed steam! Woohoo! If you have it installed, uninstall this piece of crap as soon as possible. and enjoy your game!
About
Special thanks to Gizma for the tools and great idea. I had to put it all together. It wasn't until I figured out that the unpack command needed different names for the files that it finally worked for me.
This package is dedicated to Valve.
Dear Valve. Let me emphasize how happy we are with your steam service. It was such a pleasure for us to learn that we need to download and install a bunch of crap in order to play the game we bought. Thank you for rewarding people who brought a DVD with the best reward one can imagine – give them a special version of hl2.exe that has a securom protection on it, while having generic unprotected version on DVD, so people who pirated it can easily use it. Thank you for making such an install process totally bogus and irritating, and thank you for maintaining your servers with such a great availability. Please, continue to put activation and encryption in any game you’re going to release – we really love that. We'll always find a way around it...

The game works fine. It always crashes at the exact same spot though (the loading point at Black Mesa East when Alyx is taking you to go play with the gravity gun). Anyone else get this problem? any suggestions?

I had the same problem. Open the console and go to a new map (just type in map * and it will give you a bunch of choices). It needs to be a map AFTER the Black Mesa East level. once the map loads, save the game. HL2 will think you already beat Black Mesa East. Start a new game from there, and it should work without any problems. It did for me.
PEACE
I tried the steamless half-life 2 thing using Dr Mad , gizma decryptor and MarkyMoo's patch ( the patches dnt wrk on their own). When i decrypt the GCF files and replace the other file i get to the menu but i dnt hav an active backround like it supposed to have and when i try to play a new game it does not play (returns to main menu). It is something im doing wrong or is the cd version (the 1 i hav) different from from the DVD that these patches wnt wrk?????????

hi everybody
I've been trying to play hl2 for 3 days, downloading Moo's, Gizma's and MrMad's patches and cracks. I've read many posts like this one http://www.mgforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=237231&postcount=2220
but this ++++ing game will not run... I still have an error when using "start Hl2" shortcut from moopatch :
"steamstartup() failed: could not locate steam client directory for gcf archives."
It's late, I'm tired... anyone can help me?
1) Open the "steamemu.ini" file located in:
<<Directory where you've extracted GCFs>>\root
2) Find the script "BaseDir=something"
3) Substitute something with the full path where you've extracted GCF's:
<<Directory where you've extracted GCFs>>\root
I tried daGamesta crack too, and the game works fine!!! But i didn't install any patch. I have to try with these ones....

I did like dagamsta said, and it worked just fine... apart that I have a nvidia quadro4 980 xgl and this seems to be the problem... I think this ultra expensive and ultra fast workstation graphics card is not supported by this game... although I run farcry, doom3 and painkiller at the maximum resolution and detail... I'm a great fan of HL and now I'm feeling very sad... :(

Hi,
This is how far i came:
Install game. Copy .gcf files to "c:\hl2".
Change name, unpack them (cd c:\ [] cd c:\hl2 [] unpackhl2 c:\hl2 c:\hl2).
Apply 2_Patch... Start playing from: c:\hl2\root\hl2.exe -steamlocal
PLAY PLAY PLAY GREAT!!!!
Mesa Black: I get the gravity gun. Play with it together with dog. Some kind of attack starts. We run to the door. We're all in the building, the game CRASHES!!!
I read that you should apply Dr. Mad's patch if this happens (so i did!!!). Restart game. Get back to Mesa Black part. The woman you first meet there NOT alyx, but the other one. She wants to enter the elevator (after doing blablabla!!!). Then she freezes?! She doesn't do anything!!! I check the console. It says: Could not locate/find pathnode. So the level is corrupted. I try to reďnstall etire "HALF-LIFE 2" through wyunxu way, done that, i do 2_Patch and Dr. Mad's Patch. Still, Same error
Does any1 else has this weird error (could not locate pathnode),
Thanks in advance.

http://www.intergate.com/~ttool/files0.zip
it works now
here is where i got most of them
cfg and scripts from HALF[1].LIFE.2.V1.0.ENG.LOGIC.FIX
Gixmas_needed_files from Gizma.zip from files1.zip
from HALF.LIFE.2.V1.0.TARGET21.STEAMLESSFIX used HL2_cracked_bin.rar
gcfscape123.exe
was used to unpack
counterstrike_source_shared_content.gcf
and needs Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 to work
its about 24mb download from microsoft
from alyxfreemanbg.zip a legit frontend mod pic of alex and gordon
from counterstrike_source_shared_content.gcf used startup_loading.vmt and startup_loading.vtf
StartupVids.txt is blank to prevent the playing of valve.avi at startup
errors i get so far are the elevator
(just save right after alyx saves you from combine troops and
after the airboat ride when you meet mossman, just keep trying it will eventally work)
and some closed captions dont work
save cannot be deleted for some reason? on quicksave
hl.exe still wants to hit the internet
run ipconfig to see which adaptor has an ip address then
to disable run ipconfig -release x
to reinable run ipconfig -renew x
i hope this helps

Just a word of caution for all those who try use my method...
Remember that this is just one method I came up with... the best that worked for me... I'd like to see you come up with something better... (or at least halfway decent)...
I had to tweak with the whole process on my own, but thanks to the previous methods, it got me just that much further. It wasn't until I realized I had to rename some of the files that it finaly worked for me...
And I give no claim to it being 100% bug free... sometimes HL2 crashes on me as well when I play... so don't complain... AT LEAST IT WORKS for a steamless install.
And now for some Responses:
fred hill/ poohbear0655@yahoo.com - the command prompt shortcut is included in the zip file
diablo_719@hotmail.com - did you remember to rename the files like I said above?
ih8myself/wonderfulweb@gmail.com & ExecutiveOdin/finalfantasynut@hotmail.com - "I give no claim to it being totally 100% bug free... sometimes HL2 crashes on me as well when I play... so don't complain..." But it works, RIGHT?!?!?! At least you can play the game...
Well, that's about it for now... If I have any other suggestions I'll get back to you later after I find more fixes myself....
And, please, DON'T SPAM OR FLAME ME!!! You wouldn't like it either...

Press a key and I'll bring a debugger for you"..I click OK and the game crashes...so its the steam.dll... is there a updated version which supports CS:S?? I tried the steam.dll from the Vengeance crack that doesnt let the game start on the first place...
Please help

Ok, using GCFscape and a couple of patches I managed to play through and clear HL2 without any hassle. Unfortunately when I use GCFscape to open CS:source or Deathmatch, it refuses to extract some of the files.
The problem seems to be that it tries to extract the files to to folder with a ":" in it i.e "\hl2\cs\cs:source" and windows being what it is just says "What?!?! a COLON?!? In a Directory?!?! Not on my 'puter, Lad!"
I tried extracting the files individiually to a folder without the colon and searching for a reference to the directory in the files and changing it, but no luck.
So does anyone know what I'm doing wrong. Or am I doomed to never play Cs at a Lan ever again!?

Ok. I used dagamesta's method to get my HL2 steamless up. Everything was fine and smooth till i got to this part where next level had to be loaded and this error message popped up, saying,"You are fu*ked! blah blah asked for a function not yet implemented in the emulator!"
I would like to ask if there is anyone who managed to solve this problem and how?
Steam sucks really....and to think i spent like $69.90 buying this sh*t. I really appreciate all of your help! please! thanks!

IN RESPONCE TO CULLILINGUS
=======================
I suggest you extract the files to a different folder like C:\CSS using GSFSacpe.. Now there wil be a root folder in it...just cut/copy this folder to your HL2 installation... root from C:\CSS should go over the root in HL2(Say Yes to all for replacing the files.... after that create a shortcut from the hl2.exe and goto properties to make the command line to read :
xxxx\xxxx\hl2.exe - steam -game cstrike
...where xxxx is the directory the game is extracted too. That should make it work :)
IN RESPONCE TO KH LEE
==================
I got the same prob like i stated eariler...The steam.dll that comes in daGamesta's zip seems to be an old version of the Steam emulator...to fix the prob get the file files0.zip someone posted in a thread and use the steam.dll from that...that should help

Thanks dude. I finally figured it all out and did the unpaclhl2.cmd at the command prrompt and everythings worked perfect. Can't believe it.
Thanks again, Fred.

Hi,
This is how far i came:
Greetzzz, MoneyMan
Same error
I try some fix, ai_disable, ai_norebuildgraph, noclip NOTHING
I applied some patches like emporio, revelation, bleh, ect. ect. nothing and my italian version now is in english argghhhh !
I need help, really I even try to shot to the woman without results, she freeze her ass on the elevator every time!

2 solve the prob wen the stupid biatch in black mesa east stops be4 usin the lift therefore halting yer progress, do the following:
Find out what your Quicksave and Quickload buttons are
AS SOON AS the woman freezes, press quicksave button (it has 2 be as soon as, if ya dont get it first time try again :redbiggri )
Then press quickload and the woman will spring 2 life! yey!
Thats how simple it is.....
Now, seeing as I've so kindly solved that problem 4 u all, would sum1 please help me on the same issue of gettin the same probs as sum ova peeps had. wen i double-click on me hl2 shortcut (with all the -steam etc) i get 2 identical 'hl2.exe - Entry Point Not Found' errors, saying 'The procedure entry point_f could not be located in the dynamic link library steam.dll' and then 1 error that says 'cannot load C:\.......\css\bin\filesystem_steam.dll'
PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok cheers, prakhargr8. I actually managed to get CS working without your advice, (I didn't seem to need those files after all, don't ask me why) but when I try to get deathmatch working, I start with no weapons, I can't select a player model, and I can't pick up any ammo for any weapons I DO get. I probably have to patch it or something. I s this possible without steam?

to get rid of that problem make sure the target of your shortcut ends in -steam so it should read
c:\program files\valve\steam\hl2.exe -steam
or whatever the path of your install is
Getting this problem
"The procedure entry point _f could not be located in the dynamic link library Steam.dll" - this one I get twice, and then another one:
"Unable to load filesystem_steam.dll"
-steam is after hl2.exe in the shortcut but still getting the error.
any help

Ok, just so ya know i'm using the Irish/uk DVD version of HL2. After I extract the files from the gcf's using gcfscape. I replace steam.dll with the steam.dll from Gizmas decryptor, add his needed files(just so ya know, you can get all this on the BIG Hl2 thread, just do a search for "Gizma" and that should work) and added a shortcut to "***\hl2.exe -steamlocal -game cstrike"
I think thats right, i'll have to get back to ya to confirm it though. I'm not on me own PC at the moment, coz I don't have a net connection at home.

It seems that the Vengeance version HL2installer does NOT work on certain HL2 copies....Maybe its the region...I have an Asia-Pacific edition...
All I did was decrypt using DaGamesta's method and copy the files from files0.zip...as these files fix a lot of things...
i suggest you use daGamesta's method...or you coud wait a day or two for my tut...which would explain how to setup HL2 AND CS to work perfectly

The game asked for a function not yet implimented in the emulator". well now im not F*****! i downloaded http://www.intergate.com/~ttool/files0.zip and i started over from scratch and i used the unpackhl2.bat (i think thats the name. its the one in the file0.zip) but anyway i used that to uncompress the 5 .GCF files then i copied the steam.dll from da gamsta because the one from file0.zip didnt work for me but anyway then i copied the hl2.exe from file0.zip and made the shortcut with the -steam parameters. and POW!! thanks you MG forums

[QUOTE=dude55]Half-life 2 steamless install.
Just type in the location of your HL2 GCF files and this command.
i tried to do this bit but when i click on the unpackhl2.cmd it flashes up fast and disappears could anyone help me? also how do u enter the parameters?
im a newbie to all this so if u culd make it easy to follow i would be forever grateful, thanks

I got the "steam down" verison of hl2 which consists of:
half-life 2 content.gcf 858,803 kb
platform.gcf 13,865 kb
source engine.gcf 70,287 kb
source materials.gcf 1,061,164 kb
source models.gcf 460,062 kb
source sounds.gcf 998,963 kb
If i burn those files along with your hl2_octane.zip and tutorial to dvd will that be all i need to play this game say 10 years down the road with no internet access or will i have trouble since its not the retail verison?!?

Clay
i HAD the exact same problem after upgrading my nV Geforce4Ti4400's driver to the latest verson. im not sure if that's the cause, but then when i tryed to play the game from STEAM (i have the game) it worked fine.... donno why.

Go to this site:
http://hl2.diviziafifa.com/
ddl Steam Emu 3.02b. This is the one that works like a charm... works with even newer versions and you can play cs:source, deathmatch without connecting through steam.
Also, you can just run the hl2.exe file for singleplayer without running the emulator at all... so this program gives you the choice.

Well i attemped to follow prakhargr8's tutoral and got this error when trying to unpack the files. Took a screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/djcorpselicker/error.jpg
When i clicked unpackhl2.cmd it just opened and closed real quick so i did this from command prompt.
Perhaps its looking for different files since mine came from Steam Down instead of a disc??!? I'm not smart enough to know. I posted the gcf files i have in a earlyer post in this thread.
And yes i did name the two folders HL2GCF and HL2 just to keep it easy.
Any advice???
Edit: I'll just add these to this post to keep it simple.

The cmd file requires some particular names, so i'd say rename the files to the following:
half-life 2 content.gcf -> halflife_2_base_content.gcf
platform.gcf -> no renaming
source engine.gcf -> not required by the unpackhl cmd
source materials.gcf -> base_source_shared_materials.gcf
source models.gcf -> base_source_shared_models.gcf
source sounds.gcf -> base_source_shared_sounds.gcf
try it... incase it doesn't work, unpack source engine.gcf with GCFScape and place the extracted folders(from source engine.gcf) in the extracted folder for HL2.

Iinstalled hl2 with gizmas decrypter from an original dvd ,but the game crashed
at map d1_eli_02(black mesa gravity gun tutorial) and at d2_coast_05,09,and
10.
I found a patch on a german site which seems to fix these crashes, at least
up to d2_coast_11,which is as far as I've got.
It's at http://www.tectical.de/TARGET21/fix_2.rar
I'll check out all the maps from the console later and tell you if they work.
Thanks to gizma,da gamesta,and TARGET21.

The Emulator is just for emulating steam, but you still need the files decrypted at first, [it's like having a zip extraction tool but you dont know the password for the zip file you want to extract... ]
even though some emulators like Vengeance etc. run thegame from encrypted GCFs the mostly result in some problems... plus decrypted files ensure better performance

prakhargr8,
I'm trying out your tutorial because when my internet connection goes down, "offline mode" doesn't work for me (don't get me started on that....)
Anyway, I want to be able to play CS:S with the bots, but the bots were added in an update to the game. I don't see how your method will allow for this. Since I own a legitimate retail version which is already up-to-date, is there a way to use the GCF files in the installed game which are found in the Steam\SteamApps folder?
Here is a list of the GCF files that one will see in a 5-cd retail version of the game that is completely up-to-date (as of 4.28.2005):
counter-strike source client.gcf
counter-strike source shared.gcf
half-life 2 content.gcf
platform.gcf
source engine.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
Source Shared Securom.gcf
source sounds.gcf

The tut is basically for getting HL2 and CS:S up from scratch without Steam... I think if one could get the files which were downloaded during the Steam update, and put them over a copy of HL2 & CS:S installed using my method they should get the bots etc. ya, and also try Steam-Down...

prakhargr8,
I'm trying out your tutorial because when my internet connection goes down, "offline mode" doesn't work for me (don't get me started on that....)
Source Shared Securom.gcf
source sounds.gcf
the game runned pretty cool , the gamesta style. but the problem is, when i reach the black mesa stage and alyx takes gordon down the lift, the game loads and freezes. the stupid dialog box appears saying "you are f****d". didnt u have that kinda problem while u played the game? need immediate help ASAP.
cheers
I followed the prakhargr8's instructions and let me write with his words: HL2 works like a charm Thx. Now it is possible to play hl2 without internet connection.
Actually i have encountered some errors like "game could not start because it lost connection to steam; game could not start because game files could not be loaded.... (something like that) and simmilar only with my internet connection enabled.
Thx and have a nice day :)

Am i the only one with that stupid dialog box appearing in the loading part of the black mesa level???? cuz i followed the prakhargr8's style and did everthing, installed without steam. but what i find after playing the game for 3 hrs maybe, i come to that mesa level and the weird dialog box appears. i had neva seen a swearing dialog box in a game before, hehe. anywayz, help need ASAP.

bowl4soup
Wow. I don't know anything about any dialog boxes. I was playing the game to “We Don't Go To Ravenholm” just after the Black Mesa East level and after that i stopped. For a better story feeling I am playing Half Life 1 again and after that... HL2.
As far as i played there were no problems with dilaog boxes. The only thing I noticed was, that Alyx did not want to go into the elevator (I think in the Point Insertion level – correct me if I'm wrong) and was just waiting outside and same happened with dr. Mossman (Black Mesa East). .. But this has already been discussed in these forums and the solution was just to save and load the game at that point.
In other points of view the game works great. I hope you' ll solve the problem.
PS: ...and also, that i won't come accross some swearing dialog boxes :)

ok "You are Fu**ed" it seems to be the emulator again.... I provided the latest emulator I had (I could find)....It might be a hardware related issue...maybe the game calls a particular function for some particular hardware??... we need a new emulator ppl....the vengeance types (which run HL2 from encrypted GCFs) may work but it seem they lower performance as they stream the data from files while decrypting in game and they are NOT compatible with my tutorial as I prefer to decrypt all the files first.....
GuitarMan
05-07-2005, 12:16 PM
As I have read, your tutorial seems to have been working, however there are still problems that come along with decrypting all of your files first, such as the elevator scene, and the same thing with the Dr. when they will not move forward on their own without saving first, and the "You are F***ed" dialogue box. I however have never come across any of those ever, mainly because by the time I finally got my version decrypted I found the programs Steam-Down and Non Steam-Down. They act just like Steam itself and play from the GCF's, however, you can download and update all games free with Steam-Down and with Non Steam-Down you can play all games offline and all mods as well.
So my point is, why sit around with decrypted files and then wonder how you are going to update all of your games when major updates are available? If you do get them...you'll have to go through the trouble decrypting all of the files over again, and I personally find that to be a pain! With these two programs you can download & update (obviously have to be online for that portion), play, and enjoy yourself all of the time offline, and for free.

Does anybody know who actually wrote the "you are ******" message?
Was it gizma,or someone in Valve?Or whoever wrote the steam dll ?
Also, can you use the console cheats to get the different weapons (ie sniper

Hope somebody out there knows .

For those who want to install HL2 and CSS from scratch (EU DVD-Version).
I've programed an tool that allows you to pick any .gfc-Archive so you don't need to change that .cmd/.bat-File !.
It also have the decryption keys for HL2 and CSS handy, so you need only the encrypted .gcf's.

seems no matter how many times i try i can not get the materials.gcf and the sounds.gcf. i get them extracted, run the unpacker but, when i run the game i have no sounds or textures,
SO, my Question is,,,, what does it take to get the "base_source_shared_materials.gcf" and the "base_source_shared_sounds.gcf" extracted

You need my offline-installer to unpack all .gcf and also need my SEngine-Update to get the latest HL2 Game-Engine for 56k users.

That was fast, i did not expect to see a win98 version so quick,
i have it installed and your program runs, But,, it doesn't "find " the gcf files,
i lead it right to them, in my case (d:\temp\SteamApps) i also had the gcf's extracted
to another folder for backup (c:\program files\valve\Steam\SteamApps) and even stored in yet another folder (d:\temp1)
but no matter which folder i point the "offline installer " too , it can not find any of the files.
i even tried editing the batch file to point to the gcf's, and still no files ??
i also tried the installer with the gcf's with " " and with "-" (with and without spaces)
Dagamsta's unpacker can find and unpack all but the materials and sounds .gcf's.
i may be missing something, so i re-installed hl2 and ran your installer on the games gcf files, it would not find those files either ??? it does however leave a file in all the folders i try to decrypt from saying Copy "can not find file"
i seen where some one else had downloaded your HL2-OI-win98.exe maybe if they

Maybe its a problem with Win98.
Is it possible for you, to install WinXP?
Or maybe you can unpack HL2 from another machine, if you have.
-Edit:
Look what i did found (on Nem's site) about your error msg:
Ok, I've done a little research and this is what I've found. You are right in the fact that every application has its own virtual memory space, however, not all operating systems use this memory space for file mapping. It turns out that both Windows 95 and Windows 98 use a shared memory space for file mapping so if you have other programs running they may take up the memory space that GCFScape (or a .bat-File) needs. In Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP the memory space for file mapping is not shared but is part of the application's virtual memory space.
It turns out that of the 4GB of virtual memory space available only 2GB is available for private use so we only have 2GB of memory space to work of. This means that there is no way to map a file larger than 2GB. It is also important to note that this memory space is also used by the various dynamic memory allocations the program makes and the various libraries the program loads. Because file mapping requires a continues block of virtual memory, larger files (such as the 1GB HL2 preload) will have a very hard time finding sufficient space.
...

Well the last thing you can try is, a other noSteam-emultator to play HL2.
The "other" noSteam-Emulation needs Steam to be installed, a fake account (hopefully) and all .gcf's in ".../Valve/Steam/Steamapps" (just install HL2 the normal way, with CD Setup)
After that, extract the Linked-archive into your "Steam"-Folder
and run the "SteamClient.exe".
I don't know if this will work with no veryfied "steam account", but at least give it a try :bye:

Roger, just install your orginal copy of HL2 with the setup on your CD (its called "HL2_steam.exe" something like this).
After that, extract emu after emu into your steam-folder (".../Valve/Steam/")
to see if some emu does work in some way better than the other.

As far as i know, GCFScape doesn't decrypt the files by extraction, so all your extraxcted files by using GCFScape will be corrupt/encrypted if they were encrypted before extraction (like all HL2-Archives are).
So you need to give GCFScape a key for encriypting the algorithm, but i dont know if GCFScape support that :erm:

Thanks for the info, but i have been unpacking with unpackhl2.bat and as far as decryption goes, it seems alot depends on the cd or dvd version and also and on the unpacker being used, some require no spaces "_" and other require whole name changes, ie. : base source shared sounds.gcf ..... to ... base_source_shared_sounds.gcf or annother unpacker requires "source sounds.gcf" etc. etc.... so i'm guessing there are several different encryptions depending on the game version. and possibly even several different codes in the same versions, so steam reads your version and sub code needed and sends it upon activation,,
in other words, the activation that workson my game, may not work on someone else's game...
ha, there is a bright spot to all of this,, Far cry should be showing up in my mail box any time now...

to solve the : failed to map file, error go up to options and uncheck (are ya ready for this) <drum roll> uncheck the "file mapping" and like magic it opens and extracts to the folder of your choice..
tho i now have the whole game extracted, i still ain't seen any headcrabs ):

Yeah nice hint duude, but sorry so say
If you can now extract the big Archives, you know, they will be corrupt because
GCFScape doesn't decrypt the files, it ONLY extract them :( ... and as far as i know, there is no noSteam-Emulator which will work this way...

well i haven't got to that problem yet, tho thinking ahead and from what i learned while getting to where i am, i think i know how to decrypt the extracted files.
right now i'm using the "Dagamsta's" method with the extracted gcf's, but there is something fishy there too. if i can get back top where i was a couple days ago
which was in-game but without sound or textures, i should be seeing headcrabs before much longer (coarse i think there may be a few thousand file names to change first..

Try that (into the console):
"map d1_trainstation_01.bsp"
And what show's the console? really no erros?
Did you start hl2 with "-dev" ?
Did you also apply my Full-patch (S.E. v.5-v.7)?

i started it with the "play.bat" also get the same results now by the shortcut to hl.exe too.
even tho i have just copied floders and files from the oeriginal install
and used bit and pieces from every emu i could find, the hl.exe still want to connect
but loads the start screen anyway..
i just finished downloading target21's patch, am going to see if there is anything in it i can use,
will try the console command "~" <-- guess it's still that key ?
and let ya know what i get...

ok, (notice i'm still AntiSteamer) i managed to play thru to the train apartments ,the
first auto save after the playground..
tho the hall of mirrors effect was such i had to quit, i only had a few textures
mostly ground texures, and the sound was mostly static with little blips of voices and
stuff. evedently the sounds.gcf and the materials.gcf are still the problem,
the unpacker said , could not map file.. so i'm right back to the win98 memory problem i suspect...
PisPliff, i have used so many files and conbination of files i'm not sure which emu im using anymore..
i think Valve has under estimated the number of offline hl fans...

also new to this board.
Hi to everyone.
And of cause I also have problems with no-steam half life2.
I have 56 k that´s the reason I want to make use of the No-Steam version.
I would like to ask a few questions to see if someone could help me.
I bought the German DVD yesterday (the files on the DVD date back to the 7th or 8th Oct 2004) so I guess it´s the first edition, right?
I tried Pjspliff´s way:
1. is it correct just to use Winrar to get those gfc files from the DVD?
Or must it be installed from the DVD via setup? I guess no, as I mean to remember a comment in one of those topics.
I transfered all the gfc into a folder named "new folder"
2. I used the HL2 offline installer version 1.0.5. I transfered the files into a new folder called "Games/HL2"
questions:
- I cannot locate the AI-Fix (I even dl the 23 mb file). Is it essientiell or somewhere included?
- do I need to extract also the Counterstrike files?
- do I need to set a decrypt key for a special country? In my case Germany or may it be empty?
- when finished extracting the HL2 gfc´s, I get a message "Finish extraction for english- one data copied - copy missing model files - system cannot find path (System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden)
2. next I used that big 23 mb update (took me nearly 2 hours to dl :circle: )
Is the source update already included or do I have to use the Updater too? I haven´t tried yet, cause my I-net computer runs with Win98 (and for it the Updater doesn´t work), only my game computer has XP.
3. then I transfered the css bot patch
4. then checked the ini for correct paths.
When trying to start, he says ".can´t load steam.dll"
any ideas what might have went wrong?
When I used the DVD setup and did all extraction like mentioned above, he said sth like "can´t load "bin/.../filesystem.steam.dll"
sorry I´m not at home but at university, therefore I don´t know the correct error message.
So if anyone got an idea, any help aprreciated.
By the way if everything doesn´t help. May I chose which updates I dl from steam, or do I always need the complete packages. And how big are those files normaly. As I have 56k and no flat, I don´t want to spend dozens of Euro additionally for the game.

I transfered all the gfc into a folder named "new folder"
You can use both methods to install the .gcf-Archives the only different is that the file-names will be changed if you use the setup on DVD.
2. I used the "Pjs HL2 offline installer version 1.0.5". I transfered the files into a new folder called "Games/HL2"
questions:
- I cannot locate the AI-Fix (I even dl the 23 mb file). Is it essientiell or somewhere included?
The aka "AI-FIX" are only 2-3 commands (ai_norebuildgraph 1, ai_disable 0 and ai_resume) which will be executed on HL2 start and its not essientiell needed but in some way recommended.
They will be saved in a new .cfg (ai-fix.cfg) and added into the valve.rc-file.
If you look into my Offline-Installer-Archive you'll discover that there is a folder called "HL2-AI-Fix" and in this folder is a readme.
- do I need to extract also the Counterstrike files?
Nope, you dont need to, but if you like to play css with bots i recommend to :)
- do I need to set a decrypt key for a special country? In my case Germany or may it be empty?
You only need a "special decryption-key" if you want the INGAME-Speech-Sound of HL2 in your Language. If you leave it empty, the ingame-speech will be automatically in english.
- when finished extracting the HL2 gfc´s, I get a message "Finish extraction for english- one data copied - copy missing model files - system cannot find path (System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden)
You must be sure that all files of the "HL2-OfflineInstaller_by_Pjspliff.rar"-Archive are correct unpacked and in a place with no spaces in the folder-path.
ex: "C:/Games/HL2" not "C:/Games/HL 2"
2. next I used that big 23 mb update (took me nearly 2 hours to dl :circle: )
Is the source update already included or do I have to use the Updater too? I haven´t tried yet, cause my I-net computer runs with Win98 (and for it the Updater doesn´t work), only my game computer has XP.
The patch is the full update and its almost the same as the "SE-Updater.exe"
3. then I transfered the css bot patch
Lol, you dont need the bot-patch since the full-update contains all the files from the bot patch. If you do apply the bot-patch, your css will be corrupted (Messed up Menu, and stuff like that)
4. then checked the ini for correct paths.
When trying to start, he says ".can´t load steam.dll"
any ideas what might have went wrong?
If it says that ther is no "steam.dll", please check maually if there are at least 3 files in your main dir.
ex: C:/Games/HL2/root/steam.dll"
ex: C:/Games/HL2/root/steamemu.ini"
ex: C:/Games/HL2/root/hl2.exe"
When I used the DVD setup and did all extraction like mentioned above, he said sth like "can´t load "bin/.../filesystem.steam.dll"
sorry I´m not at home but at university, therefore I don´t know the correct error message.
I did inculde a "FAQ_semthex_emu.htm" (in HL2-OfflineInstaller_by_Pjspliff.rar) which will explain your error-message.
You can't choose which updates you'd like to download, you can only choose which game to update.
For CSS its almost ~400mb
For HL2 its almost ~20mb i think
But if you apply my full-patch (23mb) you will have the latest Game-Engine and the latest bots for css.

Danke für Deine Mühe
thx for your effort
I did some experimenting and it seems I got HL2 to work:
What I did:
I mixed your Offline Installer with the solution Target21 offers (dl at megagames).
I extracted the 5 HL2 gfc except the german gfc.
Therefore I used your Installer.
Afterwards I deleted the SteamEmu.ini and did the things Target21 said in his manual.
Up to now the game works properly. At first I thought sound is missing, but it is in the audio options (they have to be adjusted).
If I´ll find the time I´ll check out your complete solution again.
It is also possible that Target21´s solution works for it´s own but decrypting would take around 30 min instead of 15 with yours.
I pay respect to all you guys who manage to solve such "problems".
Gute Arbeit! Und Danke!!

ok, I´m now at Route Kanal
and it seems the "patch" works properly.
I don´t know if these are bugs or just an installation error of mine.
-Alyx doesn´t move anymore in the elevator scene, if Gordon wents into the elevator while she speaks. She can´t be pushed or anything. Only solution if you wait behind her. Then she turns around and after finishing her dialoque she enters the elevator.
- can´t bind the arrow keys. They are all recognized as shift
- save games aren´t saved with time index (all show 00:00:00).
By the way has the game to be "re-patched" after an Update or do the old "steam-patches" still work offline?
thx in advance.

i have no modem on my gamng machine so steamless hl2 was my only option
i used the hl offline installer (i think from pjspliff) to extract hl2 and css

so
i copied the root file from the css bot patch over the top of hl2 root file,
still had errors, then it copied the root file from file0.zip over the hl2 root
file and the css bot patch
hl2 now work fine (im at the end of highway 17 so far wih no errors)
but css source still wont load, it gets to the start screen, i select new server,
set up the bots, option, etc, it starts load and stops at ~60% and shows these errors:
unknown navigation file version, i click ok, then it comes up with
the instruction at 0x241f59a7 referenced memory at 0x00d0f5c0. the memory
could not be read
i,ve only swaped some files aound so how can i get a memory error
can anyone help out, please :cries:
also how do you get garysmod to work on steamless hl2
also the off line installer is ment to come with a ai patch but it doesn't

Did you read my Tutorial (http://rapidshare.de/files/5515935/Pjs_HL2-Offline_TuT2.rar.html) ?
I have already released a better patch than the "CSS-Bot-Patch_7+".
It will solve a lot of probs, since the HL2 S.E-Patch (http://mitglied.lycos.de/pjspliff85) is like >25mb...
In the newest package of my "HL2-Offline-Installer (http://rapidshare.de/files/5553780/HL2-OfflineInstaller_by_Pjspliff.rar.html) " there is a updated "no-Steam FAQ" which tells you how to play Garrysmod...
And yes, there is a "HL2-AI-Fix". My installer will copy that file into your hl2/cfg-dir. (Its not a "patch", it does only include some commands which be executed on hl2-start :) )

1. Thats "normal", since css makes automatically "waypoints" for the bots, so it will take much time (CPU-Usage = 1337%) to make em, because the official maps aint small...
Just wait till the map automatically restarts.
2. What do you mean? HL2 or CSS? Can you play the game, or not, thats what count.
3. You cant connect to a online-server, with that offline-method. If you wanna play it online, dont use my patch dont use my "method".
Use Steam for online play.

Yep,
open the "hl2\sounds"-path of your "base_source_shared_sounds.gcf" (located on your DVD/CD's) with GcfScape (http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=75) and extract it into your hl2 folder (ex: "...\Half-Life2\root\hl2").

For 56k-Users like you, you can use (my)/ gizma 's- Method.
You need my HL2 Offline-Installer (~2,3mb) to install your HL2 and CSS without using steam.
If you want a "up-to-date" HL2 and CSS, then i reocmmend to apply my 30mb patch.

Its like "UniLauncher", it will work for offline play...
If you own the EU-Version of HL2 it'll propably work without crashes during HL2 play.
You know, my oflline installer comes with some "missing" models for the EU-Version, so my S.E-Update patch will fix all issues between the US- and EU-Version of HL2 and also brings the newest Source-Engine for HL2 and also for CSS.

Just got my copy of half-life 2 (dvd) today :) I was tempted to open it up and install it but I have exams currently so I'm not going to play it until next week maybe.
I have a question about the installer, I can install it using the GCF files on the dvd disc right? Then I update the installed game using your installer so I can get bots on counter-strike. My friend has GCF files of counter-strike and half-life 2 fully updated from steam, could I use the installer on the GCF files from steam or must I have the ones from the DVD (this is so I don't have to download the 30mb update :P)?

My friend has GCF files of counter-strike and half-life 2 fully updated from steam, could I use the installer on the GCF files from steam or must I have the ones from the DVD (this is so I don't have to download the 30mb update :P)?
HL2, CSS or Lost Coast will work with updated .gcf-Archives, using my Installer, and propably other mods.
And yep, you dont need the update then :D

Hello pjspliff,
I have used the files from your “HL2_offline_installer” and it works fine. And after a few more tests CS Source runs with the old files (steamemu.ini and steam.dll) from SemTHex too.
The problem with the old files from SemTHex is the file “PlatformMenu.vdf”. When you use these file the following error comes up:
“Could not get SERVERBROWSER and RUNGAMEENGINE interfaces”
Ok, so far so good.
The next problem is on the way. When you start a LAN server, the map starts really quick. But all map changes after the first map will take a lot of time. Sometimes 1 minute and much more. It stands at “Establishing connection to server”. When I look at the taskmanager the system is on 100 %.
Can anyone help me. All versions before starts really quick.
Now I have a few questions about your “HL2_offline_installer”:
When I use the installer for CS Source, and I use only the three gcf files that your program needs, then CS Source don’t run.
So I extracted the following files with gcfscape 1.4:
counter-strike source client.gcf
counter-strike source shared.gcf
source engine.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
then I take your steamemu.ini and your steam.dll from the “HL2_offline_installer” and make a shortcut like your instructions. And now CS Source starts.
maybe I make a mistake using the “HL2_offline_installer”.
I have an original CS Source DVD and updated this version on the internet. So I have the latest updates already. So I make a version with the new map militia and the new player models with your files (steamemu.ini + steam.dll).
But on your description “Pjs HL2-Offline-Installer TuuuT” I read something about
Source-Engine update v.5 - v.7 (>30mb)
S.E Updater v.1.0.3.msi (~2,3mb)
What are these files for ???
Please explain me
Greetings mysql

Here is a full automatic windows program which can either Install Half-life 2 directly from DVD, or can unlock (unpack) the Steam locked files from a HL2 HDD installation. (Instructions included.)
It simply automates the instructions in the "Half-life 2 steamless install" post in this thread, but prevents problems with the command line stuff (Switches,8Char Filenames, renaming files etc.). If you want to do it by hand, all the files mentioned in "Half-life 2 steamless install" are included in the ZIP .
The result is a playable Single Player HL2 without all the Steam crap.
Respect to those who worked this out !

I hope your App. is better! It seems to be more flexible CD/DVD/HDD, if less
comfortable. Still I also hope we are all pulling in the same direction.
That is why I included the Source Code. If someone can do it better, then good luck to them.
Sure you can add the AI (stupid bot) patch yourself at 11 MB, but it is for you, as it is for me, not part of the installer. The other stuff you mentioned is, as far as I can tell, for network gaming.
I was only interested in the Single Player game. When I bought it, I knew that because I live in an optical fibre area (no DSL), that online gaming was not an option, but I found the Steam stuff intrusive, slow and annoying.
I picked up all sorts of ++++ off the internet before I found this thread on how to unpack the Single player game, but I had problems with "hlunp" and long file/folder names, so I thought I'd write an installer to help others.
I'm open to suggestions on how to improve the installer, but up to now the Single Player bots are not doing too bad.

Here it is - The updated Single Player Half Life 2 SP installer. The advantage of this installer is that it is full automatic. Just run it and play it. You don't have to search for source files, edit ini files, create shortcuts or copy dlls. It can install from DVD or from a Steam Locked HDD installation. Various languages are supported, and it has a small tool to fix the language after steam/official hl2 uninstall.
The Installer includes a file with all the GCF decryption keys. (HL2, Language)
It is of course freeware. So share it, modify it, update it, whatever!

I still miss the "HL2 missings", as i did include them in my installer.
They are:
"Gman_gestures.ani"
"Roller_Spikes.dx80.vtx"
"Roller_Spikes.dx90.vtx"
"reciever_cart.vvd"
"Error*.*"
Download: http://rapidshare.de/files/14797232/hl2-models.rar.html ~134KB
They must be placed in ".../hl2/models" after extraction.
I also suggest you to add a "About"-Window to add some hints of author, credits and version etc.
I also have extracted my .gcf's from DVD onto my HDD, month's ago, looks like your installer only accepts .cab's ?
PS: I've not started programing in c++, so i can't help you so much ^_^

Hi Pjspliff,
Thanks very much for your input. I appreciate it. As you know yourselve it is really not easy to put the right stuff together for an installer. I'll add the "HL2 missings" stuff and maybe make it possible to install all GCFs from any Dir. The problem is, that if the DirPath Source Path happens to have a space in it, then it doesn't work. That's why my Installer uses Temp 8 Char Dirs and moves them to Win Dirs.
That said, the installer does only extract Cabs, but it doesn't check if they exist on the DVD. This is a mistake. I only have my DVD and don't know how other releases are packed. I will do a check for that, but even then there is still the option to Install Valve and extract from HDD. (then uninstall)
The Version tip is also important. If anybody can change the code, it is necessary to include a txt file which the program loads as "about".
Am on it...

PS. One problem that I have is that I tried to load my "savegames" into the new Emulator(dll) (The save games stopped when I hit the "Black Mesa East" bug.). When I tried to start from there I had the "AI Disabled" message. I activated the console in the options, but The Tilda key '~' didn't work and the one under the 'ESC' key on a German keyboard neither. Shift, Alt, Alt Grad with all the other keys - useless. Axel looked pretty bored, and there was absolutely no way to start the console to reactivate the AI. . . What do I have to do?!
Airboating was fun, but I don't really want to start again to hit the same problem again. It appears to be something saved in the savegame since the program works from the 'new game' point. On the otherhand, maybe it is a bug in the level. Any suggestions ?

You could check if the DirPath has space in it at the point where the user choose the Target-Dir or Source-Dir and do a Msg-Box if the path has space in it etc. or?

-Console:
To start the console, you need to start the game via the shortcut with "-console" in it.
If i close the console Ingame, i can open it with "+" again (German Keyboard)
-AI BUG:
See "FAQ_semthex_emu.htm" :facelick:
-BlackMesa- and Roadtrip-Crash:
You need the missings as mentioned
BTW: If you install Steam via the DVD with the setup.exe and then look into the Steam/SteamApps-Dir, you'll notice that the .gcf are named different than the one's on the dvd in the .cab-Archives.
So, if you install Steam via the Internet your .gcf-Archives will named like the installation from HL2 DVD setup.
My Steam-Dir for Online play looks like this (for HL2 and CSS):
- counter-strike source client.gcf
- counter-strike source shared.gcf
- counter-strike source_german.gcf
- half-life 2 content.gcf
- half-life 2_german.gcf
- source engine.gcf
- source materials.gcf
- source models.gcf
- source sounds.gcf

Hello again,
Here is the latest version, and hopefully the last, of the HL2 SP Installer.
Besides what I wrote above, it now has a tool to apply patches/Add-Ons, as well as version info. Thanks again to pjspliff for his/her tips, hints, help and input.
The program does actually take into consideration that the GCF files on the DVD are named differently than in the Valve installation, and as mentioned, I unpack them to a temporary folder and then move them to the "Target Game Folder". Since both folders are on the same drive the moving only takes a few seconds, and this way the user is not bothered with having to rename their folders, or choosing compatible target folders (Long file names/spaces etc).
I tried the console thing and it didn't work (although I could start it and enter the recommended commands).
What did work for the imported savegames with the "AI Disabled" problem is this -
1. Start the game with your imported savegames
2. Try to play the newest
2. Shut the game down
3. Delete the savegames
4. Start the game again. The levels in the "new game" option are now selectable.
5. Choose the a level and play. No AI Disabled problem !
Now I am actually going to play it !!

Do you intend to re-install that often ?
There is actually no reason to delete the GCFs from the Valve installation, or uninstall HL2, except that it saves disc space. Or you can uninstall Steam without unistalling HL2. The real problem is Steam, since it keeps trying to hit the Internet to do the update. My program doesn't care if the Valve installation is still on the HDD or not, since it overwrites the Registry entries with its own. Should you want to re-install the GCFs then don't uninstall HL2.
As mentioned, we don't want to support piracy here. My program finds the Valve Steam Locked installation on HDD and installs, or extracts and installs directly from DVD. I don't intend to make an option for creating a game from downloaded GCF files.
That said. Valve never bothered to put any copy protection on the DVD, so who knows whether the Steam Locked installation is legal or not.

Hi everybody.
Problems here :(
Installation without any problem, but then during gameplay (sometimes already on the title scrren), the game pops back to windows desktop with the following error message:
Connection to steam servers lost.
Could not acquire necessary game files.
After hitting the OK button, another "Application error in hl2.exe at Address xyz (read)" follows.
If I don't click the button and return to the game using the task manager instead, I can play for another few seconds until the game crashes with a "Visual C++ runtime error".
Any hints?

the item 'hl2.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.
nearest match based on size, date, and type:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\N...\NAVAPW32.exe
Do you want to fix this shortcut to point to this target or do you just want to delete it?

After Installation, you should have in your chosen game target folder, the "Root" folder.
In Root - hl2.exe, steam.dll, steamemu.ini and folders bin, hl2, platform and reslists.
The shortcut on the desktop should point to GameFlolder\root\hl2.exe -steam
If for some reason you don't have the above files/folders, then something went wrong, although the installer gives error messages
for just about everything that can go wrong. You can only try again.

If the hl2.exe was not there, then it is not in the packed file (GCF) on your edition. I suspect you get the hl2.exe when you unpack with steam.
I have modified the installer agan to give the installation the HL2.exe if it is missing (V 1.4 ). Can't say if it will work with the included HL2.exe or that the HL2.exe will be compatible with your edition, but it's worth a try. Please try again from DVD with V 1.4 and let me know what happens.

Uh... Nooblish question here, but I don't know where else to ask it.
It's been said that one could use this to decrypt all the GCF files from the installation and run them independent of steam.
Could one use this to decode HL2DM and CS:S for Garry's mod so one wouldn't have to purchase them for the models? If so, How?

I don't know anything about Steam-less HL2 (I'm content using Steam), but if you're asking how to get something for free that you're supposed to pay for, you're going to have to look somewhere else, because that's not supported here ...

That's not what I meant at all
I would like to decrypt the files that contain the models and the ragdolls so I can play Garry's mod. I have no wish to play either CS: Source or HL2DM. I have both downloaded as prerequisites for GMod, but I have no intention of playing them as entities unto themselves.
In short, No, I don't want to get a freebie, I just want to play an otherwise free mod for HL2 that needs the stuff in these files. Could I play GMod and have it reference these even if they aren't done through Steam?

Post: first part
Hi there!
Please tell me if there is any possibility of playing the
HL2- Episode One completely Steam-less similar to the
main game, which means without ANY internet-access.
This probably means decrypting the DVD´s *.gcf-files,
but this seems impossible without the right "key".
Unfortunately until now I haven´t found any specific forum,
which takes care of this topic or provides a solution.
Steam is real s-h-i-t, while buying a great game you have been
waiting for years, it´s (almost) impossible to play it without
restrictions...
Thanks a lot in advance!
Post: second part
Several hours after my first post I´d like answering
my question by myself, at least partially:
There seams to exist a gcf-patcher for Episode One already:
hxxp://www.megaupload.com/de/?d=WKUDDPBC
Instructions:
- copy episode 1 shared.gcf and half-life 2 episode one.gcf into the same dir as the patcher
- run .bat file
- copy and rename the .new files back into your steamapps dir
Until now I didn´t have the chance to give it a try, but it seems
that this method isn´t enougt to make the game run properly (quotation):
"I am using a steamless Hl2 with the steamemu.ini and using command lines to start the game.
I got started loading the menu so it's a pretty good sign i'm on the right way...
any ideas how to make it work from here? By copying the client.dll and server.dll from the gcf
to the bin file besides hl2.exe i got the menu to load. Now i can load all the menus but when
i start a new game it loads halfway then stops... edit: WRONG i actually loaded the menu by adding
the -console command. It seems the game doesn't load when it's trying to render something because
i get that black flicker that usually tells it's about to start.
Now how do i make it render and not crash with the files i have (or maybe i need a new hl2.exe?)"
Well, now it´s YOUR part to accelerate the progress...:sword:

Again, I ask you, what happens when you load the game up through Steam?! The first step to troubleshooting is removing any possible causes for the error, so unless you're willing to do this, we can't help you further ...
Well, I don't want install steam. I want play the game in a pc without modem. However, if necessary, I can install for making a test, but there is no telephone line on the pc...Now I write from my workstation, and i'm not in my house.
I have not understood well perhaps what you ask me, I beg you to have patience, I am 40 years old and I have never studied English to school.
Many thanks for your courtesy!:face:

I understand that many people have issues with Steam (personally, I have no problems with it). Unfortunately for their sake, Steam is "required" to play the game. Basically, we have to treat the "steamless hack" as we would any no-cd fix issue - we need to eliminate any source of error so we can proceed from there. If you can somehow install Steam and check to see if there's an issue when playing the game (the modem is only required to register your Steam account, as there should be an offline mode for non-multiplayer games). Anyway, do your best to test it out with Steam so we can better help you. See, we can give all these suggestions on conflicts that could be causing your error, but if it's just simply the steamless that's screwing up, we'd be wasting both yours and our time.
On a more side note, no problems with the "bad English" or whatever, you're doing fine ;) ... this is a place of many nationalities, backgrounds, and languages, and for the most part, people are pretty courteous about the whole difference thing. If I sounded rude in any way, my apologies, there just are people who avoid questions to get around admitting warez (not to say you were), and we can't facilitate illegal activities like that.
Again, do your best to get Steam installed and see if that solves your error. If not, we can proceed from there. Best of luck ;)

I have been following this thread for some time in order to get HL2 working without steam. I have acquired a legal copy (UK version), but i am not able to install via steam with my 56k modem ( i don't want to spend hours on steam just to get the game working offline, and i am anxious to go online with my gaming computer as it might get infested with all kinds of spyware and whatnot).
But anyway, i used the laupash's HL2 offline installer V1,4 and although the installation was successful, i can't get the game working.
Here is what happens: i double click the shortcut which is created on the desktop, the display resolution changes, and the valve spashscreen appears (the bloke with the tap sticking out of his eye), then for a split second you can see a loading screen (with a blurry picture in the background) i get my hopes up, but almost immediately afterwards a warning window opens saying:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library
Runtime error!
program: C:\Games\HL2\root\hl2.exe
abnormal program termination
I have Windows XP home edition (in dutch version), and a UK dvd version of half life, could this perhaps be the problem?
I also noticed that supra6 described the same error in post 229 (page 10 of this thread)
could anyone please tell me what i am doing wrong?
loads of thanks in advance...

Have you tried updating windows?
Have you tried updating your drivers?
What is your system specs?
Give us more info and maybe we can help
Getting and posting a screenshot of the error may also help next time it happens

Well, I finished the game with a ugly and raw solution: later using Laupash's method (And see Visual C++ error...), I create another path with Gizma's method. Now I have 2 shortcuts in my desktop (1 for Laupash hl2.exe, 1 for Gizma hl2.exe). To begin the game is necessary Gizma. When Gizma have issue (Black mesa est) I copy the SAVE path from Gizma root and paste in Laupash root. To finish the game is necessary change (Copy/paste) SAVE path 2-3 times (Laupash exe have visual C++ issue in entanglement and in last level).
This is a bad but working system...
I think when I buy a thing (hl2 is a gift from my wife...Even money from my house!), this thing is MINE (And not of others...). Before hl2 I don't know Steam....This is the last time I (Or my wife...) give money to them.
Sorry for my bad english...

thanks for your quick responses...
here are my system specs:
pentium 4 with 2,66MHz
nVidia GeForce 4 with 128 mb DDR SDRAM
512 kb cache
256 DDR 333MHz
i never updated any drivers since i never use the computer for the internet, although i did install visual basic 6,0 with visual studio 6,0 because it was needed for Pjspliffs installer (which didn't work as my command prompt doesn't recognise the commands)
here's a screenshot of the error message (as described in post 234): http://s95.photobucket.com/albums/l130/DAroy/?action=view¤t=naamloos.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
as for supra6' solution, i don't think that would work for me, as i tried wyanxu, dagamesta and pjspliff's methods, and none of them worked for me (command prompt problem). besides, i can't even start a new game, the error window shows up immediately after the splashscreen...
perhaps my version of windows xp is no longer compatible with laupash's installer (or maybe even HL2), so should i look for an update for c++ or something?
does laupash's installer require your source engine to be updated to V1,7?
i don't really know all that much about software so it's hard for me to figure out what i'm doing wrong...

I have just finished the single player game which I installed with this installer. Looks like all necessary patches are included. (at Last !)
Half-Life 2 Steamless Single Player Installer V1.4
Features
All Patches Included. Installs from DVD, Steam Locked Installation or GCF Source. Steam not required ! Multi-Language support. GCF Decryption Key file included.
Instructions
Just unpack the zip to a temporary folder and run the HL2_SP_Installer.exe. Instructions are included in the extracted files and the installer itself.

I believe to have resolved the Visual C++ error at begins a new game with Laupash method. I'm italian, and i choose italian language to create root path, but...A wav file (cit_train_geton.wav) in italian language cause the error (I don't know why...). To resolve i simply replace with same english file.
Same issue (and same remedy) in begin level 9a (ai_icanreprogram.wav) and last level (mo_alyxneedthis.wav).
This files are in root\hl2\sounds\vo
The first in "trainyard" path, the second in "novaprospekt" path and the third in "citadel" path.

Hello,
Haven't looked in for a while. A few infos on my installer.
It was written on XP PRO SP2. My system does not have Visual C++ installed, but it does have .net.
Since VC++ runtime library is required, I can only assume that it is included in XPPro SP2 /.net.
Details of the included game sources are included in the help file. (PJSpliff, Gizma, the emulator etc).
My HL2 version is the German edition.
The only issue I had while playing the game was the "VC++ Runtime Library" error on the highway entering the tunnel just after messing about with the car batteries. I simply loaded the last quicksave and it worked. Black Messa and all the other problems were fixed with the patches included in the installer.
Unfortunately I can't test it on other editions or platforms other than my own. All the files the installer uses can be found in the extracted HL2_Installer.zip.
It may also be of interest that PJSpliff appears to be using the same German edition as me, which could explain why we don't have problems.

I solve my issue for a chance...After create 2 root path, 1 for Gizma (English) and 1 for Laupash (Italian), i can understand of Gizma work where Laupash crash...But the original GCF are the same! I try to replace paths into hl2 path, 1 after 1 and find root\hl2\sound\VO.
If I had gizma root in italian language...I would never have resolved.
Many many thanks for Gizma, PJSpliff and Laupash...You are very great!

I have an original Half Life 2 but my password doesn't work with Steam for some reason.. And anyway, I would like to play offline.
So... What I did was that i used daGamesta's patch and than, when I got the "You Got ++++ed" and right after "Visual C++ Runtime Error" errors, I used the "file0.zip" patch and just copied all files that were in there into my original unpacked files' folder.
At this point, I figured "Hmm.. Now at last I'l get to play without the game quiting on me every time he needs to load a new area or section...", but unfortunately for me, at the very points where the game used to give me the errors above, the damn game gave me a whole-new-fresh-from-the-fridge "The instruction at "0x241f59a" referenced memory at..." error!
What can I do?
BTW, I have WinXP SP2, Pentium 4 3.07g Hz, a lousy visual adapter (but the game still works) and the International or UK version of the game in 5 CDs.

OK.. I've just confirmed my theory.. My game crashes every time it saves (right afterwards) and because of all those auto-saves it crashes... That another problem..

This sounds like the problem I described in Post 206 in this thread.
I played the game with one emulator up to the 'black mesa' bug (the one you mentioned). I then changed the emulator and added the patches. The savegames gave me a load of nasty errors. They appear to have something emulator specific in them.
Try backing up the savegames, deleting everything in the savegame folder and playing the level from the start from the main menu.
Worked for me.

I'l try. Thanks.. What emulator BTW?

The Emulator is the Steam.dll in the root directory of your chosen game folder. It emulates the original Valve Steam.dll.
My installer uses the SemTHeX v.1.0a Emu with ini file.
The easiest way to do it is to use my installer (post 215), since it includes the necessary patches and updates the emulator dll and ini file automatically. Since you have CDs you will have to use the Valve installer and then use mine to install the game......
.backup the savegames
.install HL2 / Steam.
.run my installer
.unistall HL2/Steam
.Fix the Textlanguage if necessary with my installer option.
.follow the instructions in Post 206
You could also do it by hand.(probably better)
Extract the files in my installer. The Addon.txt files tells you where the patches should be copied to. The patches can be found in the "Addon" folder.
The steam.dll needs to overwrite your existing one in the root folder, and the steamemu.ini should also be copied to hl2\root.
You need to change the path in the steamemu.ini to your game path. This is mine.....
------------------------
; Directory Path in which Game directories can be found,
; can be either absolute or relative from launcher executable location
BaseDir=C:\Games\hl2\root
------------------------
Then follow the instructions about the savegames in Post 206 / 245
Simply trying to play an imported savegame opens the level options in the main menu. You can then delete them.
Hope this helps. It may not be the same problem, but worth a try.

OK.. I tried your installer, and still - right after loading my game crashes with the good old "Virtual C++ Runtime" Error..
But still, there is an improvement - I managed to quick save the game without making it crash..
All I did was installing my game through your crack (I copied the GFC all the GFC files into one folder and ran your installer), and started a new game.. Should've I done something in addition?

Did you try to play a savegame to open the menu level options, and then delete the savegames ? This clears all the obselete stuff out of your savegames which causes errors because it refers to the previous emulator.
If there were no error / info messages when you installed HL2 with my installer, then it worked as intended. I still think the problem is with the savegames, but maybe it is your hl2 edition.
Which language / edition are you using ?

I used both the way you've said below, and the way you wrote in you readme.txt, and still the same problem. I start the game from scratch so I don't think it's a problem with the savegame. Actually, I quicksaved twice, but then at the third time (it was right after you fall down that window on the crate, in the beginning), it crashed.
Concerning my game - I don't know what version it is, my guess - International Language - CD-Rom Edition.
