HL2 problem with messages

Hi!!!
I have a problem with half-life 2. The in game messages are not displayed. the messages like the start of new chapter, game saved etc are not displayed. i hv gforce 128mb and 256 RAM and i am running hl2 on its default video settings. even the ai disabled message was not displayed when the problem occured. fortunately i was aware of it and got the soln from this forum. Can any body help???

hmm try to press in game key "L" or key ";". This is key to activete a in game messages as are talking, etc..

hi!!!
i tried pressing 'L' or ';' during the game but it didnt work.... also i found that all the msgs including the chapter names and the "Saved...." msgs are stored in a file called hl2_english.txt in the hl2\resource folder... if thats any help... can anybody help me now ???
