I tried to connect two pc's just using a Cat5e network cable through the motherboard LAN port but I just get the network cable inplugged icon on the taskbar.
I thought you could connect two machines without a hub that way?
Is there some annoying little setting in windows I need to change?

you need a router. you cant directly connect two PC's.

Remember that the Workgroup names on both PC's have to be the same for the PC's to talk to each other oh and also the same OS helps too ;)
There is a network wizard, which will allow you to make a floppy with info to take to the other PC to help setup a network.
Remember to enable File Sharing etc :P Could be a wee bit dangerous to do that without a router, but you have to if you plan on sending or reading files on each PC ;)
And yes Crossover cable for PC to PC and straight-through for PC-Router or PC-Hub or PC-Modem

@noob u only need a routher when you are connecting 2 networks togeather like the internet and your lan.
@bahmunt a crossover cable should work but i was having a simular problem with a onboard network card at my friends place the other day so i just put a new network in it and forgot about the one on the MB. u can grab a 2nd hand card for like $2
