Please read this carefully before you proceed.

As far as I know, a' NO CD Crack' or 'Activation Crack' is not currently available.

The only ones that seem to be circulating around at the moment are fakes!

If/When they become available, you will find them posted in this thread.

If you want to play the game that badly, use the damned CD/DVD! If for some reason you can't use the CD/DVD due to copy protection problems/etc, then I'm sorry. Blame the software company.

There are 3 available fixes on megagames.com.

The Emporio BackupCD "Half.Life.2.v1.0.Eng.Emporio.BackupCD.zip" contains a working client.dll file. I've dwld a fixed client.dll from other places and non-Emporio and they have not worked. But this one actually seems to work.

There is also a "Reloaded - No Authentication Steam Patch" file called ""HALF.LIFE.2.NSAP.RELOADED.ZIP". This file scared me a bit. It's detected at patching time by my AV as a trojan since it installs 3 files into the \SYSTEM\ folder, one being a file named svchost.exe (oooooo). But I can imagine that this actually IS a fix that is meant to fool HL2 in believing an svchost.exe process has been created for the contact to Steam. Am I right or IS this a "dangerous" trojan?

I really am not able to say, as I don't have this game. I cannot test what's available as of yet.

Perhaps as others use what MegaGames has to offer, we can get a bit more feedback.

I downloaded these files last nite. None of them worked for me. The dll files didn't appear to do anything while the "steam patch" came up with an error "Could not apply HL patch." I restarted my comp and next thing I know NAV and Personal Firewall wouldn't load on startup. Auto-enable wouldn't work either. Ended up having to uninstall and re-install both NAV & PF. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'd be wary of these particular cracks.

The dll file is only for the Emporio release, as far as I know. It should work.

Reason for the steam patch not being applied is that svchost.exe file that NAV probably blocked, therefore the patch was unsuccesful. But two other files were still installed and could maybe have messed it up for NAV and FW.

I HAVE warned about what that patch includes so anyone testing just for fun anyway can't complain they did not know about the possible consequences.

The No Activation patch contains an irc bot/trojan. I posted instructions on how to remove it, but funny enough, these instructions mysteriously vanished.

As i've tracked the persons responsible for this trojan down, i'm actually doing something about it (like knocking him off the net, jacking his botnet, and turning it against him.)

Thx for informing me it's an "IRC" trojan. Wasn't sure. Did seem a bit suspicious. The only file that an AV will detect as trojan is the svchost.exe file. The other two will remain in the installed directory. I use a tracking app, so I could see all the files it installed and where. They are all placed in \SYSTEM\ folder, so check there. I can't name the other 2 since I've deleted my track log for that install/patch process and don't remember the names.

Could you tell me what kind of an IRC trojan this was? simple IRC client to connect to servers or a major trojan to control/run infected computers apps with, install other trojans, etc?
By your post I believe it's a client capable of DDoS attacks, right?

Thx for taking action against these mentally abused puny little kids, poor things lacking major functions :P

Do these work around the online authenication?

I have the DVD version fo the game, but a 14kb web connection.

How to Remove the IRC Bot / Trojan in
HALF.LIFE.2.NSAP.RELOADED.ZIP

First many thx to betam4x who helped me to remove this *Ooops*

I can remeber what the Readme from betam4x says and here it is:

The exe created the follwing files:

...\system\svchost.exe
...\system32\a.bat
...\system32\b.bat
...\system32\css.exe
...\system32\ger.exe
...\system32\ms.exe
...\system32\mswinsck.ocx
...\system32\unet.txt
AND
In the root (probably C:\)
tmpfile.txt
tmptmp.bat

WARNING:
And there is an svchost.exe in your SYSTEM32 folder,
that is the right, valid exe file, from Windows. Dont delete.

How to remove:
First of all if you runned it, turn off your Internet Connection (cut the cable).

Go to TaskManager (CTRL,ALT,DEL), Look after the
svchost.exe with your Username, not the SYSTEM.
Kill that Processes (if u close the wrong one, your system shuts down).

After that, go into Windows Registry (regedit):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUN

I can remeber that there was a "svchost.exe" Entry or a "steam"
entry. Delete both if they are there !

Goto

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/RUN

and delete "svchost.exe" or "steam" entry like above.

After that, Restart, look after the files above and look in the Registry,if the entrys or files are there again.
If not...great.

I hope that, it was all and that i didn't forget something...(if not, betam4x say it please...)

I changed my passwords after that...(just for secure and i changed them on another virus and trojan free pc)

And again, many thanks to betam4x for the great help and to Sh@o (for the right file names)

Newbie, sorry to have to come down on you.

You should NEVER post a file name to remove if you are not absolutely shure of the name. Saying that "file name abcdefghi.xxx or something like it" is not good. Leave it out then. In security you have to be ABSOLUTELY sure.

Remembering is not good enough. Humans can't remember things exactly. Even have research to back that up.

You also posted the dwld file name wrong. Just read my posts and you could have just copied the EXACT file name.

I reinstalled the trojan JUST to get the CORRECT information down here. It's imperative that you have the right file names to remove:

...\system\svchost.exe
...\system32\a.bat
...\system32\b.bat
...\system32\css.exe
...\system32\ger.exe
...\system32\ms.exe
...\system32\mswinsck.ocx
...\system32\unet.txt
AND
In the root (probably C:\)
tmpfile.txt

I can probably live with the DVD in the drive for a little bit. Because after I beat the game, I'll just shelf it. But why disk check Counter-Strike: Source?! I can't live with that. And I really want to make a back-up of this DVD before carrying it back and forth to work screws it up.

Is there any success at breaking the disk check? It's not right that the Steam purchasers don't have a disk check, and we retail purchasers do. WTF?

Two questions:
If a Steam user back's up their Steam version and gives it to a reatil purchaser, would that work? (Is that legal?) Also, if you create an ISO of your DVD, somehow hack Windows to hide the DAEMON Tools executable from Task Manager, and use DT to create a virtual DVD drive, would that aide in spoofing the SecuROM copy protection?

there IS a crack availiable its elusive and i am still waiting for a mate to send it to me he says it works and apparantly its on one of the P2P programs and is not Kazaa Emule or WinMx once i get it and if it works ill dump it here im expecting it within the next 48hours

Well, since I've already posted twice that there is a crack that works then you must mean another completely different one.
I know two versions of for cracking game. One is APE's client.dll patcher and the other is Emporio's cracked client.dll. Both work just fine. I have friends who have tested them both and they DO work. They are not elusive either.
Looking forward to seeing what this "new" crack is you are talking about.

Well, u probably have APE's cracked client.dll. THAT one didn't work. You gotta learn to read right, but you may not understand english. Read what I wrote. I did NOT say APE's client.dll file worked. That one has had issues.
They've been tested on many installations so it's obviously you who can't do it right if you have the two I'm telling you about, which I don't think you do since they first got out 17th.

It sounds like you are using the old APE cracked client.dll.
Try and find any of the other 2 and it should work.

I also tried those client.dll file with hl2 installed from cd's copied directly from oryginal ones, and i must agree that they are worthless. All those files available on megagames now - DON't WORK(at least for my ver. of the game which was baught in Poland by the way). So in short, if you copied your cd's from original ones those cracks currently available won't work for you :(.

Yes, Daemon Tools should work. I'd recommend Alcohol 120% though. It's an amazingly great app..
To get it to work I'd say RTFM ;) (Read manual)

The crack and the fix BOTH work to 100% on Emporio release.

someone who understand something about coding and that stuff should look at the Source Code of the no-cd-crack [that what hijack posted]...that we can be sure, that its no trojan.

'It WILL and MUST connect to steam!
This is not a crack, it'll only allow you to play the game without the CD in the drive. Nothing more!
Just a nocd, as explained on the web page.'

You can also find them on the site that xXx placed above.
It doesn't unlock the game or anything like that.

The truth about the offline unlocker is that when it is released, it will weigh about 20 mb.
My friend told me that steam downloads about 21 mb of data while activating this stupid game. The three files that were placed on megagames only worked for the emporio release (whatever that means). If you have any other release, don't bother downloading tiny files.

The crack by hijack doesnt crack steam activation, you still need a valid steam acount. follow the link and read what he says about it.

So far a working 'Activation Crack' for either the CD or DVD purchased game is not available. Steam apparantly is keeping the crackers miffed so far!

I find it anoying as i have internet acess, yet only through a university network (stirling uni in scotland), so steam is blocked!

What i do not understand is this, the HL2NoSteamPatch.exe file that is supposed to contain this nasty trojan has failed to produce anything on my system.

None of the files you specified were found in my system 32 folder nor none of the running processes. PC Cillin is updated and finds NOTHING, DU meter shows NO bandwidth being used when I am idle but still connected to the internet. Are you sure this contains a trojan?

And if it does contain a trojan WHY does Megagames still have it available for download on the PC Fixes section?

Oh and btw, PC Cillin won't detect it in most cases because it isn't a known virus. Norton looks for suspicious behavior as well as scanning for virus patterns, so it will find it.

And IRC takes up little bandwidth.

Yes you do.. here is what I found from my expieriance with the nocd patch.

A) You have to have retail version.
B) connect to steam and go through all the online setup and registration stuff. This is normal for retail install folks. I have dialup at home and what a long ass install to decrypt game files. phew!
C) optional, set your password to remember so you can play offline without having to connect to steam. Thanks for giving us dialup users this option steam.
D)Well, at this point you're 100% legit, playing with cd offline etc.

Finally, follow the direction for the nocd fix and all is good. WARNING !! I have not tested online mode but offline mode works perfect. I am able to play with no cd just fine. My cd is safe from scratches and use. This fix is for 100% legit HL2 owners only so don't expect to get any hacked version working with this fix. Not saying you won't, but it wasn't designed for hacked versions.

absolutley nothing dey ist useless it looks like us honest dudes who scraped together $120 aus got screwed i hate valve and im sueing them for misappropriation and there gonna get it why should we have to wait 2 hours to register on steam only to be able to play on one computer when we wanna network it at home when we could have downloaded a cracked version for free and LANed it whenever we feel like it i hate VALVE the can go suck on some lead tablets if ya know what i mean

Interesting question. On my machine its not connected to the net. I did a tempory one to get up and going and then used Hijack's patch. I've not needed to reconnect and "offline" play seems to be working very well! Just got the big gun on my airboat!

First Post :nervous:

Got HL2 and CS Source working without Steam,CD, and CD-Key Verification

First, the stuff you will need
Installation of HL2
Dotnet Framework
GCFScape (Search for it in Google)
HL1 Dedicated Server
HL2.EXE from the Steam Version
Modded client.dll (Found at Megagames)
about 4.5 GB Free Space on a drive

First thing to do is to go into the Steam\SteamApps Folder and extract all the .GCF files with GCFScape to another folder ex.
E:\Games\Half Life 2

You can leave the Platform.gcf. Just extract everything with source and half life 2 in the title to the same directory. Leave the file that contains securerom alone as well.

Once extracted you should find the vollowing
E:\Games\Half Life 2\root

in the root folder there will be a HL2.exe

Now look in the Dedicated server for HL1 for a file named filesystem_stdio.dll
Copy that to root\hl2\bin (Same folder as filesystem_steam.dll)

Now also copy the client.dll to that folder.

Now, in the source engine.gcf there is a hl2.exe, this is the steam version exe (The other one is in a file named secure rom.gcf or something or other)

Now, that should be it

Double Click the hl2.exe (CRASH !!!!!)

Make a shortcut to the hl2.exe and change it as follows

ex.
"E:\Games\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe" -steam

That should work now. Double Click it and there you go.

You can extract CS Source as well and make a shortcut for it as follows

ex.
"E:\Games\Half Life 2\root\hl2.exe" -steam -game cstrike

It worked for me, please give me some feedback on it if you have problems.

(You might not need the cracked dll, if someone could let me know if they tried)

Edit:

Grab the autoexec.cfg to fix the funny stuff the happens, the node and ai things and put them in E:\Games\Half Life 2\root\hl2\config

I've tried this method (that is very similar to the one that was placed yesterday abd vanished by the way) and the GCFScape was having problems extracting some important dll files like tier0.dll , engine.dll and a couple of other. When i run the shortcut a message box appears sayin that tier0.dll is missing and so on. What's the problem?

Funny, I had one one extraction problem and that was server_i486.so from the counterstrike gcf. If might have been an old version of GCFScape. I will follow it up when I get home and report back tomorrow, but I believe the file is there. I was playing both CS and HL2 last night without a problem.

Well, I did it from my 5 CD version, didn't preload. Install is and look in the SteamApps Folder, all the GCF's are there. If you get extraction problems with GCFScape Reply in this thread. I will try build a zip with the files most commonly corrupted in the GCF extraction.

Howdy guys, I have just read your last couple of posts, and are wondering if this is a way to get around steam alltogether? or would you still need to register with them. I have a 5 disc version here, but no authorization as of yet. Like a lot of people, im still waiting on a steam fix.

If so, would i need to download a HL1 dedicated server to get that file you listed, or is there an easier way....

What version of the .NET framework are you running ?

I'm using the newest one available on microsoft.com. Today I also noticed that the GCFScape only had problems with the 'source engine.gcf' file.
Here is the list of files that it didn't extract (got the 'file doesn't contain any physical data' message):

valve_french.txt,
shaderapidx9.dll,
vguimatsurface.dll,
dxsupport.cfg,
engine.dll,
filesystem_steam.dll

Would it work if I copied those files from an original, already activated and played version of the game ????

Got HL2 and CS Source working without Steam,CD, and CD-Key Verification

First, the stuff you will need
Installation of HL2
Dotnet Framework
GCFScape (Search for it in Google)
HL1 Dedicated Server
HL2.EXE from the Steam Version
Modded client.dll (Found at Megagames)
about 4.5 GB Free Space on a drive

no probs there, cant find modded client.dll though. ah well hope it shows up soon, cheers

I did everything in that long post and I finally have no more dll error messages but all my HL2 dvd does is spin in the drive and the hard drive light flickers when I double click on my HL2.exe...what do I do?

I cannot seem to get my hands on the file "filesystem_stdio.dll" i tried downloading the dedicated half life server, but i cannot find the file in the installed folder. Any chance anyone could post a link for it? Thanx

Ok, tested the GCFScape Extraction on the Source Enige Files and found no extration problems.

The HLDS that you download via steam has the filesystem_stdio.dll, but if someone could host it I could send it to them to host.

Yes, you bypass steam all together when using it like this. I do not have an internet connection at home so this is the only way I am going to be able to play, so it was a figure it out or no HL2 for me.

Did the guide again last night and it worked for me. If you have problems, post them and lets see if we can get the guide squeeky clean and easy. If you cannot find the filesystem_stdio, download it from here ...

Check in the Platform.gcf file in SteamApps for the steam.dll file and see if that will fix you problem. I don't have the game here to check it.

As for the "Contains no physical Data" problem, don't see that one.

I've read that alot of people have had success with Hijacks program.

I can't belive that there is still no crack or patch to bypass this fu**ing Steam bull++++. I've got the original DVD-version of the game twice, the standard version in german and the US collectors edition. But I still can't play even not one of them, because my game pc has no internet connection :angry2: . Blame VALVE for their fu**ing Staem. If they have had integrated a telephone activation like micro$oft, there wouldn't be a problem. I bought the games hoping that someone make a crack for it fast, but it's seeming, that there is no cracker which is smart enough to make one. :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

Does the method posted by ReiLiC bypass Steam?

Yes it bypasses steam, but you have to install steam and Hl2 first to get to the GCF files, once you have all the gcfs extracted and Hl2 running, you can uninstall steam and hl2 and run it from the version you constructed. You can even reinstall windows and run it again, as long as you remeber to make the short cuts right with the -steam parameter after the hl2.exe

I've still one question: when you activate hl2 via steam, the activation process lasts a relativ long time, i've read. I've also read that some gamefiles will be downloaded / updated at the activation process. Is the game able to run stable without these files when you play without update / activate it via steam, or are they needed? Will they release patches for hl2 only via Steam, or will they be available by download too? Does someone know that?

What exactly gets updated during the steam process is unknown, but it takes a very long time. A friend of mine spent about an hour on a 512 DSL line for the activation.

I will check if I can get my PC to the office and do the activation and see if anything happens, my game runs fine, just have not had alot of time to play it.

As for deamon tool on steam, my friend runs alcohol 52% and is playing online, don't know if he has changed anything on the steam or alcohol side.

I tried your approach Relic (had HL2 activated with steam and then used all the gcf files, everything extracted fine), no problems until I start "Hl2.exe -steam".
It just tells me the local Steam service is not running (I had also to copy the steam files there, else I just got the error "Steam.dll not found").
When I start just Hl2.exe (doesn't matter if I use the 2MB original version or the 85kB version from hijack_hl2) I get "Unable to get IFileSystem interface from filesystem".
I guessed it had something to do with "FileSystem_Stdio.dll", when I delete it or rename it I get "Unable to load FileSystem_Stdio.dll". I tried also copy and renaming the FileSystem_Steam.dll to FileSystem_Stdio.dll and I'm back to the first error "local Steam service is not running".

I guess the -Steam parameter fixes the error with IFileSystem, so I restored everything (put FileSystem_Stdio.dll and stuff), but I still need to fix that Steam issue. You said you can even uninstall steam? How does this work for you when there is no steam.dll in the same directory?
I always get an application error "steam.dll was not found" (and then "could not load FileSystem_steam.dll") if I start without steam.dll in the directory.

Anyone any ideas?

Ive done everything in the Relic guide, but I get two errors. One is the 'steam.dll' not found, and the other is saying it cant load the filesystem_steam.dll file. Has anyone managed to get it working at all?

This is the error i get after doing all those ReiLiC steps, it takes about 30-40seconds for this to pop up after double clicking the hl2 shortcut with -steam thing in it ;

Oh man, this is really giving me a headache! Today I managed to run the game BUT again I had problems playing it. I started the games via the hl.exe shortcut ReiLiC said and the valve intro showed up. After that the game started loading and imiedetally an error occured saying 'Could not load library client.' I used the emporio's fixed client.dll, when I didnt use it the game wouldnt start at all. It feels terrible. I feel that I am so close but yet so far from playing this dumb game. If I had the money I would have bought it. The problem is that I don't have any dough lately. :(

It takes me about 45 to 60 minutes to extract the whole bunch. A timely process, but how badly do you want to play?

I started my copy of hl2 (which i installed a week ago) and it insisted on going on to steam before it would work, when i signed on it started verfiying my hl2 files. I think valve have some more protection in steam that activates every week, so you guys who have cd-cracks better take them off before you connect to steam or else valve will be around you house with laywers and a baseball bat.

Yeah, with all the stuttering people are talking about etc, it seems a patch is being released tomorrow to fix the problem, something to do with loading textures in video memory at start of level or something to that effect. I think the only way to perhaps get these performance updates will be through steam anyway, and therefore will probably be better game-play in the long run if people just buy the game.

Thoughts anyone?

Ok i've fixed the problem with background01.vtf, in another forum they said you should copy the same file from the cstrike/materials/console folder, game starts now, but after the "Half-Life Man" I get a black background and only can use the mouse!?

i have a steam account and can play half life 2 without problems. but i�ll make a backup of my complete steam folder - so i don�t install the game again (or activate)

does anybody know which files are used with steam? i�ve backup the steam folder and the registry data (searched with regseeker - great programm).

contains the system folder of windows any steam files? i�ve trying to search with the following keywords *steam* *valve* *hl2* ...

in case of a new OS installation i�ll install steam normally and copy over the backup files...

any idea about this method????

Hmmmm, got some bad news and some good news ... Bad first, encrypted files, there are files in the HL2 GCF's that are encrypted that stop the game from working and steam knows where these files are. If anyone can give me a way to compare files it two directories I will be able to catch them, but otherwise there is a problem. Another problem, the scripts folder in hl2 is encrypted, now this one I can upload and then you will be able to play CS Source.

I found a fix on bit torrent, but same problem, the files have to be decripted first. Working on it, so some please give me a file compare thing.

When i unpack HL2 via Relic's method, HL2 ask's for permission to access the internet and if I deny it the program crashes with some kind of cant connect error. Should I allow it internet access? I dont want valve coming after me.

EDIT: Allowed it and gave me this:
steamstartup() failed: ......failed with error 108: the local steam service is not running.

Im to paranoid to run steam as I try it cos i will buy the game soon through steam and I dont want my account cancelled.

@ReiLiC: UltraEdit contains a "folder compare" feature. It features hex editing as well.

BTW, I'm getting the same error as ewornalek (SteamStartup connection error), no matter which client.dll I'm using. Original DVD is in drive, so that's really a Steam issue.

oh i found the steam.dll in the folder where i installed half life... i then copied it to the bin files and stuff, but then when i loaded up hl2, it asked for a net connection (which since i use zone alarm pro i could stop, luckily) but then it had a connection refused error... so it is trying to connect to steam... anyone know how to bypass this? and am downloading the nosteam crack from emule... taking its time though...

I have gotten it to work without steam, looks like it want to connect when the files have not need "Unlocked yet" If I can use Ultra Edit and find the difference in the GCF files then we might be able to build an unlock for ourselfs (Or I must find what was on my pc when I did the extractions the first time round)

I hope you'll find a way to decrypt the files soon. I'm almost despaired because of hl2. I've ot the game TWICE but I can't play it... aaaaarrrghhhhh :angryfire: .VALVE, they can make a protection like this Steam-++++ but they are too stupid to protect their own network to prevent that someone can steal their sourcecode. I think I needn't say anymore to VALVE.

I've read that they brought out the first little patch for hl2. Is this only available over Steam? If all upcoming patches are only available over Steam, we've got all a big problem I think.

Ok, this is the way I got it to work ... I tested it now and did it this morning.

1. Activate you HL2 with Steam and let it Unlock the files
2. Extract the GCFs
3. Extract the ZIP attached to this Post
4. Make the Shortcuts
5. Blow some people away

I will compare the activated and unactivated HL2 GCF's tonight at home and see if there is anything we can do. Is someone can tell me how we will distribute the differences when they are found that would be nice, not keen on uploading 3 gig of data.

If you don't have success with this then I will zip and upload my entire bin folder (not hl2\bin) and that should work

But it has to be UNLOCKED, so you guys behind firewalls, go to a friends unlock it and then crack and backup it.

So, what I need now is basically a patching engine to get the differences in the GCF's record then and be able to deploy the to another PC with locked GCF's and unlock the locked GCF's

You will still need to grab the client.dll from Megagames, too big to upload here ... there are the files I used to crack it about an hour or so ago ...

Looking If I can find any more info, I don't see how the e-mule one will work, unless they have found a way to unlock the GCF files.

Sat last night from about 6 pm to 2:30 am trying to pin point the files that changed during activation and before I went to bed I was standing at 700 Mb word of files that had a few bits chaged, we need a comparison between activated and locked files, then we can go forward. I just need to know what to do, I got both activated and locked files on my machine now so I just need the app to compare them

That is the whole point, but I formatted my PC and what ever allowed me to extract the files the first 2 time correctly has taken off and I cannot find what is was. I came to activate the thing on steam this morning to see it there was any difference of if I had a corrupted install. I activated it and followed the steps again and then it worked.

I cannot tell you what chaged yet only that something was changed. Hopefully I will be able to find it tonight and report it ...

I know the activation is the issue, but up untill the time 'n reinstalled windows it was not a problem for me, now I am in exactly the same spot as jou guys, clean windows without any funny encription/description software.

@ReiLiC: Well, once you've gotten the list of changed files with UltraEdit or something similar, you could try to build a binary patch with (PatchFactory (http://www.agensoft.com)) or a similar product (there are lots). These only take differences into account, just like the unix diff tool.
Actually I somehow doubt that this'll suffice, as probably there would be already a working activation crack around then. But who knows... ;-)

Anywhere out there MUST BE a solution available. The crackers bypassed the windows activation, it couldn't be that nobody is able to crack the steam activation. IF NOBODY WILL BE ABLE TO BYPASS IT FAST, ALL PUBLISHERS WILL SET UP SOMETHING LIKE STEAM AND NOBODY WILL BE ABLE TO PLAY WITHOUT AN INTERNET CONNECTION ANYMORE. as another of the poor saps with a legit copy of hl2 stuck behind a uni firewall i tried reilic's method and experienced the problem with missing .dll's. not +++++ing just providing more info as to whats going on.

what do the new hl2 fix files posted on megagames do? had some problems with the very early post files so a little cautious now.

also i assume there is no news on valve providing a non internet steam verification service... on second thoughts it would be pointless as they still wouldnt be able to authorise games without releasing a steam by pass method onto the internet. which they obviously wouldnt do. hm

Well, I downloaded the E-Donkey crack yesterday (took me about four hours :dozey: ) but didn't manage to make it work.
The instructions for this crack say to copy the files to the HL2 directory and overwrite all other files.
Now I do not exactly know where to copy the files!
If I copy them to
C:\Games\Half-Life2\ then I get the Invalid or corrupt background texture materials/console/background01.vtf error
If I copy them to
C:\Games\Half-Life2\Steam then I get the unable to get IFilesystem interface from filesystem factory error! :graysighw

Didn't have time to try anything else (e.g. to start it with hl2.exe -steam) but will try in about 6 hours.

No chance to get it. It's possible that it's not available from some counties. I know this phenomenon from some other websites too. In some cases it's possible to solve that using a proxy but it doesn't work with this one. Just let you time to post it here. I'll wait.

Belive me, it doesn't work. As I said, the problem could be that it only works correct using a proxy in the US or another country. I have this problem some times before.

Why do you think the crack doesn't work?

downloaded file from above link and extracted to hl2 folder. when i tried to launch from .exe was told i lacked Ifilesystem from file system factory. when i launched from 'launcher' recieve Error! cant find background image 'materials/console/background01.vtf'

supect the link simply provides the extracted files given in reilic's earlier method (around page 3) but with the same problems that reilic may have since identified - ie some files remain encrypted.

ne 1 know if this is the case.

now i can see the start of the hl2 loading screen, but! it crashes and i get a sourcesceme.res error message. I think this is as far as people have got using an unlocked version of steam (DVD version), am i right? any updates?

Let me have a guess the vtf is in die console directory.

At the most you can get CS Source running without activating it. Get the scripts directory from an activated version and plonk it in hl2\ then run hl2.exe -steam -game cstrike.

That will get counter-strike functional, but hl2 will still not work.

Unfortunately I can approve that the posted file only lets you get past the Valve intro (well, that's *something* ;-), but after that, there's only a blank screen. At least on my computer. By the way, beside the common background01.vtf error, I got the same for startup_loading.vtf. As I couldn't find it in the cstrike GCF, I simply renamed it. What about the size difference of the eMule / http file (reported 37 MB vs. 11 MB) ?

I am going to assume you did, if you register and activate your DVD with steam and then follow the steps you can get it working using the RAR from the previous posts.

But you will need the unlocked files for it to work. You will get a problem with the console vtf's and then you will get to a stage where it will show the valve logo and drop out saying something about the Client Libs ... This is a pretty good sign you have a locked version.

Once you get it unlocked you can do a test for yourself, extract everything from the unlocked files again and crack it in the exact same way you did the previous version. That will then run.

If you want to pinpoint the files that are locked, start copying directory by directory till it works. I stopped after maps ...

Well, If you followed the guide, extracted the GCF and extracted the cracks and make the shortcuts right, then it should be it. I did the whole exersize this morning and it worked.

It is not the hl.exe ... as long as you use the stream one and not the one from the secure rom gcf.

Hey fellas, I can see everyone is getting as frustrated as I am! I've tried several ways to get things working and every time I think I'm close something different goes wrong. Another thing... THANKS ReiLiC! He has the game working and yet spent alot of time here trying to help the rest of us poor saps! So thanks goes out to him. the simplest way to get HL2 on a "non legal way" is to hack an steam account like a buddy from me.... it needs a lot of fortune - but this method is to simple.... because some user of steam have a very simple password - in cause of my buddy it was *Valve* :hands:

Ok, this is the way I got it to work ... I tested it now and did it this morning.

1. Activate you HL2 with Steam and let it Unlock the files
2. Extract the GCFs
3. Extract the ZIP attached to this Post
4. Make the Shortcuts
5. Blow some people away

I will compare the activated and unactivated HL2 GCF's tonight at home and see if there is anything we can do. Is someone can tell me how we will distribute the differences when they are found that would be nice, not keen on uploading 3 gig of data.

If you don't have success with this then I will zip and upload my entire bin folder (not hl2\bin) and that should work

But it has to be UNLOCKED, so you guys behind firewalls, go to a friends unlock it and then crack and backup it.

So, what I need now is basically a patching engine to get the differences in the GCF's record then and be able to deploy the to another PC with locked GCF's and unlock the locked GCF's

You will still need to grab the client.dll from Megagames, too big to upload here ... there are the files I used to crack it about an hour or so ago ...

Looking If I can find any more info, I don't see how the e-mule one will work, unless they have found a way to unlock the GCF files.

Sorry for not posting earlier, but I've been following this thread since the beginning, and even though I've gotten just as frustrated as everyone else, and after following ReiLiC's guide to the letter, it still wasn't working for me (including downloading the cracked client.dll and the full Half Life Dedicated Server), but this post was my salvation. Overwriting the files I extracted with the ones in this zip fixed it for me, and now it works. All I have to say is thatnk you, ReiLic. You've done the world a great service.

Make sure you copy your Counter-Strike Source bin folder you have extracted to your Half-Life 2 files folder so it stops errors such as background01.vtf

Have anyone thorougly tried the 11mb and 37mb files yet and extracted all the gcf files?

- half-life 2 content.gcf
- source engine.gcf
- source materials.gcf
- source models.gcf
- source sounds.gcf

talking about which files are encrypted and have been decrypted try doing a compare before and after of the hl2 folder

FINALLY !!!!

After about 10 - 15 post telling you there was a difference in the files I now have concrete proof.

There is between 60 - 150 KB Difference between the files, only one file counterstrike shared (The small 3 mb one) has no difference in it.

Patch Factory will take 2 days before it can produce a reliable way to patch the files.

Thats not all, the file names have also changed. I will work on it this weekend and depending on the weather (Actual Weather) I might have the patch done by monday, If someone has found a different way to activate and unlock the files please tell me, I don't want to do all this for nothing.

Well, there is about 3 gig of data that need to be compared and that is going to take a while, it is not as simple as just extract and there we go anymore ...

I will set it to run tonight and by sunday it should be done and I might have a patch file to use ... but that depends on the weather, if the power goes out because of the rain then I will not have anything ... so keep you thumbs crossed. I will need someone to host the patch once it is done. I don't want it to be used for piracy !

I don't see it being bigger than about 5 or 6 meg, but that I will have to see once the patching process is complete.

what i've done to get past the missing dll's is just copy all the dll's from both the bin (/bin and /hl2/bin) files to each other... if that makes sense - so they are both the same and are both a pretty large library of dll's... i'm still getting the filesystem factory error no matter what i try and i've downloaded the emule patch and it didn't make any difference... is there some program which could make a list of all the files/folders of my directory for the sake of comparing them to relic's when he gets them working... what i think i may have done is, since i have multiple copies of the dll's in the bin folders it may be stuffing it up - i heard that happened to some other people

heres a way to unlock the files with steam:
1) Launch Steam.

2) Right click on Half-Life 2 in the 'Just Released' list and click 'Purchase'.

3) Enter the cd-key and click 'Next':

4) When it gets to 2 bars, pull out your network cable or disconnect your modem.

5) Let it keep going, don't crash Steam. When it finishes you should get a message
saying "Servers are busy" and then Half-Life 2 will appear in your 'My Games' list.
Now put the network cable back in or reconnect your modem. Do not attempt to
run the game, if you do, a message will appear saying, "Duplicate cd-key' and the
game will dissapear from your 'My Games' list.

6) Right click Half-Life 2 in the 'My Games' list and click Properties. Change
Automatic Updates to 'Do not Automatically update this game' and then back to
'Always keep this game up to date'.

7) Now you should see a message box saying 'Unlocking Half-Life 2 game files'.
When this is finished (should take between 5-10 mins) Steam will update the game.

8] Wait until the update is finished, and then open the following unencrypted GCF files
using GCFScape and extract all files to 1 directory:
- half-life 2 content.gcf
- source engine.gcf
- source materials.gcf
- source models.gcf
- source sounds.gcf

9) Once this is done, copy your Counter-Strike: Source 'bin' folder and paste it where
you have extraced the Half-Life 2 files.

10) Create a shortcut of hl2.exe on the desktop using the -steam command.

(eg. "C:\HL2\hl2.exe" -steam)

11) Now run the shortcut on the desktop, you should now be able to play Half-Life 2
and WITHOUT running through Steam.

try it, it really works I'm playing the game right now, I don't need internet or steam our the CD, it just works perfect.

heres a way to unlock the files with steam:

Yet again, let me point out that the file unlocking is key to this process...
Just watch out for this method, Remember, Valve tracks your IP. But if you can do this and you have a legal version then why would you need the CDKEY above ... You can the unlock the stuff with your CD key.

If anyone insists on posting CDKEYS, then the patch is off. I will not be part op pirating this game. Valve worked hard on it and made the mistake of steam, I am here to try correct THAT problem, not give others the game who have not spent a cent on it. That is not fair towards the software developers.

i followed lots of different instructions but they all lead to the same thing
"unable to get ifilesystem interface from the filesystem factory. i put the hl2\hl2.exe" -steam parameter in the shortcut. whats going on? when i try to copy the "filesystem_steam.dll" and the "filesystem_stdio.dll it says "The procedure entry point_f could not be located in the dynamic link library Steam.dll" any ideas? Thanks for posting all the tips Relic you seem like a really smart guy. smarter than me anyway.

Patch Factory will take 2 days before it can produce a reliable way to patch the files.It might be worth trying another patcher. Maybe Asta Binary Patcher (http://www.astatech.com/docs/DeltaPatchMgr.htm) or RTPatch (couldn't find a download for that) works faster?

It worked (well, watching the Valve intro ;-) when I deleted the Steam.dll / SteamUI.dll in the same directory as hl2.exe / launcher.exe. That's because there's another Steam.dll in the \bin folder.

I think the majority of the people here bought the game. (Of course I can only speak for myself. I've bought the game twice as I already said). People like I without internet on their game machines are depending on your work, so please go on with that. I've the game since november 16th, but I still can't play.

I understand this, but if I have to handle it via PM's to the people with confirmed versions then I will. Like stated, this is not a piracy hotline, you have to have the game.

I will carry on with my work and will report back as soon as I have answers, but it will take time, there is alot to do.
